The best RPGs to play if you like The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

If you want another party-based, turn-based fantasy RPG after The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, start with Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster. It is the closest match for directed, single-player adventures built around turn-based battles and character progression. Choose Dragon Quest XI S for a friendlier modern entry with a very long campaign, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for deeper battlefield tactics, Baldur’s Gate 3 for consequential party choices, or Persona 5 Royal for character-driven progression in a radically different setting.

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age is a 2004 role-playing game from EA Redwood Shores. Its appeal is unusually specific: a single-player journey through a familiar fantasy world, a fixed party of heroes, and turn-based encounters that reward choosing the right attack, support ability, or target rather than relying only on reflexes. The story is directed rather than open-ended, so the next objective is usually clear and the satisfaction comes from building the party and mastering each fight.

The recommendations below are ordered by how closely they preserve that experience. “Closest” does not mean identical. Some games match the combat loop but change the setting; others keep the party structure while replacing a linear adventure with a reactive, choice-heavy campaign.

What makes The Third Age distinctive

Before choosing a successor, separate the game’s ingredients. The Third Age combines four traits that are often split across different RPGs:

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Turn-based encounters: battles proceed through commands and turns, giving you time to inspect the situation and plan.
  • A party rather than a lone avatar: success depends on complementary roles, not one character’s equipment alone.
  • Directed fantasy adventure: the campaign follows a clear route and a defined story instead of asking you to create your own narrative in a fully open world.
  • Progression between fights: battles feed into new abilities and stronger builds, so an encounter is part of a longer plan.

GamesRadar has described The Third Age as a turn-based Lord of the Rings RPG developed in the vein of Final Fantasy and Tales. That comparison explains why the first recommendation is another traditional, story-led Japanese RPG rather than a real-time action game.

1. Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster: the closest mechanical match

Why it feels familiar

If what you miss is selecting commands for a party while a focused story carries you from one set piece to the next, begin here. GamesRadar’s comparison places The Third Age in the Final Fantasy tradition, and Final Fantasy X is the clearest expression of that recommendation. Its battles are turn-based, and the adventure is structured around a defined cast and a directed journey rather than an unbounded sandbox.

The remaster includes Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. The first game is the closer match for The Third Age’s straightforward party-adventure shape; the second gives the package a different rhythm and progression emphasis. Treat the bundle as two related RPGs, not as one long continuous campaign with identical systems.

Progression and party planning

Square Enix documents Final Fantasy X’s Sphere Grid as its central progression system. Characters advance by moving through a shared, board-like network of stat increases and abilities. That makes growth a planning exercise: you are not merely replacing equipment after every chapter, but deciding which route through the grid best serves each character and, depending on how you build, how much their roles overlap.

This is a strong fit if you enjoyed The Third Age’s sense that every battle contributes to a steadily improving team. It also offers more room to think about long-term development than a simple level-up screen, while remaining readable enough for a first turn-based RPG.

Where it differs

  • The setting is not Middle-earth, and its tone and visual identity are distinct.
  • The campaign is more cinematic and character-focused than The Third Age’s licensed fantasy presentation.
  • The Sphere Grid can demand more attention than a conventional class-and-level system.

The HD Remaster is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam. Edition features and performance options can vary by platform, so check the store page for the system you intend to use.

2. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition: the best approachable modern pick

Why beginners should choose it

Dragon Quest XI S is the safest recommendation when you want classic turn-based combat without having to learn a dense ruleset first. Square Enix describes a system designed to ease players into combat: the basic mechanics are simple enough for newcomers while retaining enough depth for experienced players. That balance makes it a good follow-up when The Third Age’s commands and party roles are appealing but you do not want a highly technical tactics game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game tells a standalone story in a detailed world, so you do not need knowledge of earlier entries. Its tone is more traditionally colorful and lightly comic than The Third Age, but the underlying structure is familiar: travel through a broad fantasy setting, recruit and manage a group, fight turn-based battles, and decide how to spend the rewards from each encounter.

Scope and optional content

Square Enix’s official page advertises “well over 100 hours” of content. That is publisher-provided marketing language, not a measured average, and your total will depend on how much optional material you pursue. The important practical point is scale: this is a substantially larger commitment than a compact, linear campaign, with side activities and extra objectives that can occupy players long after the main route is clear.

An official demo is offered on several platforms. Availability and transfer features can differ by region and edition, so use the current store listing to confirm whether the demo is offered on your hardware and whether progress carries into the full game.

How it compares with The Third Age

  • Closer: readable turn-based commands, a traditional fantasy journey, and a party that improves over time.
  • Broader: a larger world and more optional content than The Third Age’s directed structure.
  • Different: a brighter visual style and a more expansive sense of place.

Pick this one when you want the comfort of classic RPG rules with modern production values and enough content to make the purchase a long-term game rather than a short replay.

3. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance: the best choice for tactical battles

What changes on the battlefield

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is the recommendation for players whose favorite part of The Third Age was not simply taking turns, but deciding exactly which ability to use, on which target, and in what order. iRankGames places it first among its turn-based-strategy matches for The Third Age, emphasizing the shared fantasy setting, tactical combat and single-player structure.

Instead of a mostly flat arena in which the key question is “which command is strongest?”, battles are built around positioning and tactical choices. Movement, engagement order and the relationship between roles matter as much as raw statistics. A fight can turn on where a unit stands and which enemy is denied an action, not just on how much damage your strongest move deals.

Who will enjoy the extra complexity

  • Players who pause before every move to examine the whole battlefield.
  • Players who enjoy assembling a team for a specific encounter rather than using one universal formation.
  • Players who want a fantasy campaign in which tactical decisions are the main source of challenge.

The trade-off is pace. A grid-based battle takes longer to set up and resolve than a conventional command-menu encounter. If you mainly want the cinematic flow and uncomplicated party rotation of The Third Age, this can feel like a demanding detour. If you remember the game for its strategic decisions, it is the most direct upgrade in that dimension.

Availability caution

The evidence used for this comparison does not establish a current platform list for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Availability can depend on the original release, a re-release or regional storefront support, so verify the edition offered for your hardware before planning around it.

4. Baldur’s Gate 3: the best for choice and party agency

Why it is a bigger step away

Baldur’s Gate 3 retains party-based, turn-driven combat but changes the purpose of the adventure. The Third Age gives you a directed route through a licensed fantasy story. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a systemic role-playing game in which conversations, exploration and combat interact, and your decisions can redirect what happens next.

PC Gamer highlights its large number of choices, encounters and secrets. That makes it ideal if you are asking, “What if my party could solve the same problem in several different ways?” You may approach a situation through dialogue, exploration, preparation or a fight, and the consequences can continue into later scenes.

Party building and experimentation

The party is not just a list of characters waiting for commands. Their abilities, personalities and relationships affect how you approach obstacles. Experimentation is part of the design: a build that looks unusual on paper may become useful when the environment, party composition and a particular encounter reward it.

This freedom is also the main adjustment for a Third Age player. There is more to track, more room to make an ineffective choice, and less certainty that the game will present the next objective in a single obvious line. Save often, read ability descriptions, and treat failed plans as information rather than as proof that the party is permanently ruined.

Choose it when agency matters more than setting fidelity

There is no Middle-earth equivalent here, and the tone is not a simple substitution for Tolkien-inspired adventure. Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 when your priority is party agency, secrets and consequences. Stay with Final Fantasy X or Dragon Quest XI S if you want the cleaner, more directed rhythm that made The Third Age comfortable to play.

5. Persona 5 Royal: the best for character-focused progression

The appeal for party and story players

Persona 5 Royal is the most dramatic setting change on this list: a modern city and supernatural conflict replace a medieval-style fantasy journey. Its recommendation rests on progression and character investment rather than world similarity. PC Gamer describes Royal as an expanded and refined version with new characters, quality-of-life changes and an additional story section.

Like The Third Age, it gives you a team whose development matters across a long single-player campaign. Battles are turn-based, but the game surrounds them with daily planning, relationship building and other activities. Progress is therefore not limited to winning the next encounter; you are also deciding how to spend limited time so the group is stronger and the personal stories develop.

What to expect from the structure

  • More scheduling: the calendar-based routine asks you to choose which activity deserves attention on a given day.
  • More character emphasis: relationships and individual arcs are central, not decoration between dungeons.
  • A different tone: the modern setting and supernatural premise are intentionally far from Middle-earth.

Select it if the party bonds and long-term character arcs were as important to you as the fantasy battles. Do not select it merely because you want another medieval adventure; its strengths are elsewhere.

How to choose in 30 seconds

  • Want the closest overall structure? Play Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster.
  • Want the easiest modern entry point? Play Dragon Quest XI S.
  • Want battles where positioning is the main puzzle? Play Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
  • Want decisions that reshape quests and relationships? Play Baldur’s Gate 3.
  • Want party bonds and progression built around a daily routine? Play Persona 5 Royal.

A practical play order after The Third Age

  1. Start with Final Fantasy X. It preserves the directed, turn-based party adventure most closely while introducing the Sphere Grid as a deeper progression tool.
  2. Move to Dragon Quest XI S if you want a longer and more relaxed classic RPG, or if you prefer a gentler learning curve.
  3. Try Final Fantasy Tactics Advance when you are ready to make positioning and encounter-specific planning the center of play.
  4. Choose Persona 5 Royal for a character-first campaign with a radically different setting and a calendar structure.
  5. Finish with Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want the largest leap into reactive storytelling, experimentation and party agency.

This order is not a quality ranking. It moves from the most recognizable version of The Third Age’s combat-and-adventure loop toward games that reinterpret one part of that formula more radically.

Bottom line

Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster is the best first recommendation for most The Third Age players. It combines directed storytelling, turn-based party combat and meaningful progression in the same broad shape. Dragon Quest XI S is the more approachable modern alternative, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance the specialist choice for tactical combat, Baldur’s Gate 3 the choice-driven reinvention, and Persona 5 Royal the character-progression alternative. Start with the feature you most want to preserve, not with the setting you expect to reproduce exactly.
