That structure gives the game an unusually wide sense of scale. Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology: the strongest timeline-editing RPG
The White Chronicle and multiple histories
Radiant Historia is the clearest recommendation for the question, “Which RPG lets me change the timeline?” Its protagonist, Stocke, uses the White Chronicle to travel through time and see multiple timelines play out. The game is built around comparing those histories and returning to earlier points when a different choice is needed.
This is not simply a story that happens to contain a time machine. A central hub for changing history makes timeline revision a repeatable part of progression. You can move between histories, identify where they diverge and use what you learn in one branch to make progress in another. Time manipulation also affects battles
The timeline concept extends into combat through the battle-system Change command. That link between the narrative system and the battle system is what separates Radiant Historia from games where time travel is only a plot device. History is something you consult and revise, while battles provide another context in which changing circumstances matters.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition: a parallel-world time RPG

Square Enix describes it as an RPG that “transcends time and space, unfolding across two interlinked parallel worlds.” The key idea is not repeatedly rewriting one history from a central menu; it is moving between two versions of reality and understanding how they relate.
That distinction changes how you read the game’s environments. A location is not simply an earlier or later version of itself. It belongs to one of two connected worlds, and the differences between those worlds become part of the investigation. If your favorite time-travel stories use alternate realities, Chrono Cross is the most direct match in this group. Cris Tales: the clearest visible cause-and-effect system

That presentation makes Cris Tales an especially good entry point for players who find timeline fiction confusing. The past shows what led to the current situation, the present is where your action occurs, and the future provides a preview of the result. Your choices can dynamically change the future. The important distinction is that the game emphasizes visible consequences rather than only branching dialogue or a final ending. Length and modern presentation
The official Cris Tales site describes the game as offering more than 20 hours of gameplay. That is an “more than” claim from the developer and publisher’s undated official site, accessed October 18, 2026; it is not a guaranteed completion time for every player or play style.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined: a traditional past-to-present adventure
The Shrine of Mysteries
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is the option for players who want time travel inside a familiar, traditional adventure format. Square Enix’s official product description says the heroes discover the Shrine of Mysteries and are swept back in time. That discovery establishes the past as the route through which the party understands and eventually affects the present.
Its structure is best understood as a past-to-present journey, not as an always-open timeline laboratory. You travel back to uncover what happened, then return to a world whose situation is connected to those earlier events. The emphasis is on progressing through a broad adventure in the Dragon Quest tradition.
How it differs from the other five-era stories
Compared with Radiant Historia, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined does not lead with a repeatable system for switching among multiple histories. Compared with Chrono Cross, it is not defined by two parallel worlds. Its appeal is the clarity of a historical adventure: go back, learn what shaped the present, and continue the larger quest with that knowledge.

- You want a traditional Dragon Quest-style role-playing adventure.

Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined use time primarily to connect eras. They can make the past important to the present without turning every sequence into a branch-management exercise. Cris Tales takes a third route by displaying the three time periods together and making the consequence visible while you play.
