There is no single best skill set for every Monster Hunter Wilds hunter. The skills worth a slot depend on your weapon, where you are in the game, the actions you rely on, and whether you want more damage, easier execution, or better survivability. Start with those choices, then keep skills that support them.
How to decide which skills are worth a slot
- Choose your weapon and identify its main actions. Focus on the attacks and utility moves you actually use. A bonus is only valuable if it applies to your weapon and improves the way you play it.
- Set your progression stage. A build for advancing through the game has different constraints from an endgame optimization set. Decide which one you are assembling before comparing recommendations.
- Pick a goal. Decide whether you want to increase damage, make the weapon easier to use, or improve your odds of surviving mistakes. These goals can overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
- Check the skill’s compatibility and cost. Confirm that a weapon-specific skill applies to the weapon you are using, then consider what other skill you must give up to fit it.
- Test whether the skill earns its place. If removing an optional skill does not noticeably change your hunt, those slots may be better used elsewhere.
This is a practical way to answer “what skills should I prioritize?” without assuming that a general ranking applies to every weapon or build. The Wilds Field Guide and community build analyses can help you explore weapon-specific ideas, but the available guidance does not establish one authoritative best-skill ranking for every weapon.

Weapon-specific skills and armor skills are not the same
Wilds distinguishes weapon-specific skills from armor skills. That difference matters if you carry two weapons and switch between them: a weapon-specific bonus may not help when the other weapon is active. A developer discussion of the two-weapon system notes this compatibility concern; check the skill’s in-game description against the weapon you plan to use rather than assuming a bonus transfers. Xbox Wire’s developer interview discusses the system.
Choose a skill goal that matches your hunt
For damage
Prioritize skills that support the actions responsible for most of your damage with the chosen weapon. A skill that sounds powerful in isolation may be a poor use of a slot if it does not benefit your weapon’s actual loop.
#1 Best Overall
- Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
- A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
- New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
- Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
- Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
For comfort
If you are learning a weapon or a monster, a build that makes execution more manageable can be more useful than one focused only on damage. Comfort is a deliberate tradeoff, not a weaker version of a universal “best” set.
For survival
If you are frequently taking hits, it is reasonable to give some build space to staying alive. The right balance depends on what is ending your hunts and what you are willing to give up to address it.
Rank #2
- Hunt giant nature-infused bests – Survive their attacks, learn from their behaviors, and use your Karakuri and your weapons in combination to cut these creatures down to size.
- Craft your hunting grounds – You are the only one in Azuma able to wield the Karakuri technology.
- Hunt in a pack, or be a lone wolf – In WILD HEARTS you can face the Kemono alone or unite with up to two friends (or other players) to stalk and hunt your prey.
- Gear up to hunt, hunt to gear up – Create your character, then gather materials from each hunt and build an array of armor and weapons.
Why progression stage changes the answer
During progression, your available equipment and skill slots constrain your choices. An endgame build is designed under different conditions, so do not treat its recommendations as a checklist you must reproduce while still advancing. Use advice that matches your current stage and purpose; revisit the build when your equipment or needs change.

Community tier lists and build pages can offer useful starting points, but no independently verified source establishes a complete, authoritative ranking for every weapon. Exact skill values and rankings can also depend on the game version. Before committing to precise numbers or a current-version tier list, verify the skill text and game data in your live game and check that the recommendation names the weapon and build context it assumes.

- Enter the stadium and take part of one of the biggest competitions across 34 sports: from swimming, soccer, extreme bike, weightlifting, trampoline and much more!
- Defend your own country and visit the World: United States, Australia, Japan, France…
- Train yourself alone or compete with your friends!

Official PlayStation starter and endgame guides provide broader weapon and progression context. Use them alongside weapon-specific build advice, not as proof that one skill set is best for everyone.
