There is no torrent site that can responsibly be called the best place to download copyrighted PC games. BitTorrent is a lawful peer-to-peer protocol, but a commercially released game is generally copyright-protected unless its rights holder clearly authorizes redistribution. Unofficial game torrents also carry serious malware, account-security, and reliability risks.
If your priority is low cost, DRM-free access, older games, or a large catalog, the safer answer is an authorized store: GOG for DRM-free releases, Steam for breadth, the Epic Games Store for promotions, itch.io for independent games, or PC Game Pass for subscription access.

Why no torrent site is a reliable recommendation
A torrent index can show that a file is popular or has many seeders. It cannot reliably prove that the file is authorized, that the domain is genuine, or that the installer is clean. “Verified,” “VIP,” moderator-approved, and user-recommended labels can refer to an uploader reputation, a comment, or a single scan—not to the copyright status or future safety of every executable in the package.

Is downloading PC games from torrent sites legal?
BitTorrent itself is not illegal. It is a file-transfer protocol used for authorized material such as open-source software, some Linux distributions, public-domain works, and files whose creators explicitly permit peer-to-peer distribution.
The legal question concerns the particular file, the rights holder’s permission, your jurisdiction, and whether you are also uploading pieces to other users. In the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office explains that software and other digital works are generally protected by copyright and warns that downloading copyrighted files through peer-to-peer networks can create liability.
Do not assume that a download becomes lawful because you own a copy, the game is old, the publisher closed, or you only downloaded rather than seeded it. “Abandonware” is a community label, not a general copyright exception. Backup, preservation, and fair-use arguments also do not provide blanket permission to obtain an unauthorized copy. Laws differ outside the United States, so consult local legal guidance for a specific situation.
Are torrent sites safe for PC games?
Not reliably. Commercial game torrents commonly involve cracks, loaders, modified executables, scripts, or instructions to disable Windows security. That makes it difficult to establish what the program will do before it runs.
Common failure modes include:
- Fake installers and cloned download pages
- Trojanized DLL files, key generators, and password stealers
- Cryptocurrency miners and potentially unwanted applications
- Botnet or residential-proxy malware
- Malicious “updates,” fixes, or online-bypass tools
- Corrupted archives and incomplete installations
- Outdated builds that lack patches, cloud saves, multiplayer, or achievements
- Installers that request unnecessary administrator privileges
The FBI has warned that pirated video games and other torrented content can contain malware capable of enrolling a victim’s device in a residential proxy network. Microsoft likewise warns that potentially unwanted applications may display advertising, install additional software, or secretly use a PC for activities such as cryptomining. Microsoft recommends keeping unwanted-application protection enabled.

Why cracks add risk
A crack changes or replaces program files so the game can run without its normal licensing check. You cannot independently assume that the altered executable behaves like the original. Instructions that tell you to turn off Defender, Smart App Control, or other protections remove an important safety barrier rather than proving a detection is harmless.
Modified builds may also break official servers, updates, multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, controller support, or compatibility with current Windows versions. Repack compression and bundled scripts can make troubleshooting harder. A torrent client being legitimate says nothing about the files transferred through it, and HTTPS only encrypts the connection to a website; it does not validate the site or file.

No. A VPN may obscure some traffic from a local network or internet provider, depending on its configuration and policies, but it does not grant permission to copy copyrighted games, inspect an installer for malware, prevent phishing, or protect credentials from an infected executable. Providers may retain logs, restrict peer-to-peer traffic, or terminate accounts under their own terms.
Do not treat a VPN as a copyright workaround or a safety guarantee.

GOG: best for DRM-free games and offline installers
GOG describes its platform as offering a curated selection of PC games, including DRM-free releases, with an optional client. It is especially useful for older games and readers who want downloadable installers rather than depending entirely on a launcher.

Check the individual product page: DRM-free availability is title- and edition-specific. A DRM-free installer also does not guarantee compatibility with every future version of Windows, and GOG’s catalog is smaller than Steam’s.
Steam: best for catalog breadth and ecosystem features
Steam is the broad general-purpose choice for mainstream PC games, frequent sales, automatic updates, cloud saves, achievements, Workshop content, multiplayer features, and controller support.
The trade-off is account dependence. DRM or a third-party launcher may apply, and access generally means a license tied to an account rather than unrestricted ownership of all game files. Availability, refund rules, and publisher support can change by title, region, and current policy.
Epic Games Store: best for promotions

Promotions have their own redemption and platform conditions, and availability varies by region. You will also be using a separate Epic account and launcher.

itch.io: best for indie and experimental games
itch.io is useful for freeware, game-jam projects, experimental releases, and pay-what-you-want games distributed directly by creators.
Because creator practices vary, verify that you are on the developer’s legitimate page, inspect the download format, read recent project information, and avoid downloads that demand suspicious permissions or security exclusions. Indie does not automatically mean safe.
PC Game Pass: best for trying many games
PC Game Pass suits players who prioritize access over permanent retention. It can be economical when you want to sample a broad catalog for a limited period.
It requires a subscription, games can leave the catalog, and some titles require additional accounts or launchers. Catalogs, plans, prices, and availability vary by country.

- For an older game, check GOG or the publisher’s official archive before considering any unofficial source.
Prices, taxes, regional availability, subscription plans, and promotions change. Verify the current terms directly on the official store page rather than relying on a static price claim.
If you already downloaded a suspicious game file
- Do not run it. Do not open the crack, installer, patch, or “fix.”
- Do not disable antivirus, Smart App Control, or other Windows protections.
- If you suspect execution or compromise, disconnect the device from sensitive networks and accounts where practical.
- Run an updated Microsoft Defender scan; use an offline scan when compromise is suspected.
- From a separate clean device, change important passwords, revoke active sessions, and review email, gaming, financial, and social accounts.
