Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOverseer’s Guardian is the best all-purpose named weapon in Fallout 4 for most players, but it is not an objective winner for every build. Deliverer is better for stealth and V.A.T.S., Spray n’ Pray is better for automatic area damage, and The Last Minute is the stronger fixed choice for precision limb crippling. Far Harbor and Nuka-World add their own specialized standouts.
There is no single strongest weapon for every Fallout 4 character. The right choice depends on your perks, preferred range, use of V.A.T.S., ammunition supply, faction progress, and whether you own Far Harbor or Nuka-World. For most players, however, Overseer’s Guardian is the best all-purpose rifle; Deliverer is the best stealth and V.A.T.S. pistol; and Spray n’ Pray is the most effective fixed automatic crowd-control weapon.

DLC scope: The Fallout 4 Game of the Year Edition includes the base game and six official add-ons: Far Harbor, Nuka-World, Automatron, Vault-Tec Workshop, Contraptions Workshop, and Wasteland Workshop. The weapon recommendations below identify exactly which content is required.
What “best weapon” means in Fallout 4
Fallout 4 has two important categories of high-end weapons. A fixed unique weapon comes from a specific merchant, quest, named character, or location and has a predetermined legendary effect. A random legendary weapon is generated through the game’s loot system and can receive an effect that happens to be better for your particular build.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction matters. These named weapons are dependable recommendations because you can pursue them directly, but they are not automatically stronger than every random legendary drop. A legendary Gauss rifle with an especially useful effect can beat The Last Minute for a dedicated rifle build, for example. Many named weapons are also modified versions of ordinary weapon types rather than completely new visual models.
#1 Best Overall
- Freedom and Liberty Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
- Be whoever you want with the special character system. From a power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of perks and develop your own playstyle
- New next generation graphics and lighting engine brings to life the world of fallout. From the blasted forests of the common wealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
- Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage
1. Overseer’s Guardian: best all-purpose rifle
Where to find it: Buy Overseer’s Guardian from Alexis Combes in Vault 81.
Overseer’s Guardian is the safest single recommendation for a general Fallout 4 playthrough. It is a combat rifle with the Two Shot effect, which fires an additional projectile. The combat rifle platform is versatile, and its use of .45 ammunition makes it easier to keep supplied than weapons dependent on rarer ammunition types.
Its biggest advantage is flexibility. Rebuild it with a semi-automatic receiver, a suitable barrel, stock, magazine, and scope for a Rifleman character, or convert it to automatic fire for a Commando build. That lets the same purchase remain useful as your character develops instead of forcing you to commit to one firing style.
How to use Overseer’s Guardian
- Rifleman: Use a scoped semi-automatic configuration for medium- and long-range engagements.
- Commando: Install an automatic receiver and build around sustained fire.
- General play: Keep it as your dependable primary weapon while reserving specialized weapons for stealth, heavy targets, or crowds.
The barriers are access to Vault 81 and enough caps to buy it. It is a purchase rather than a quest reward, and there is no need to wait for a random legendary drop with the right effect. It is the best practical general-purpose rifle, not necessarily the weapon with the highest possible damage in every specialized setup.
2. Deliverer: best stealth and V.A.T.S. pistol
Where to find it: Obtain Deliverer during the Railroad quest Tradecraft. It is inside a sealed area of the Switchboard in Lexington and becomes accessible during that quest.
Deliverer is built for characters who want to remain hidden and fire several accurate shots through V.A.T.S. Its V.A.T.S. Enhanced effect improves V.A.T.S. hit chance and reduces Action Point cost. It also comes with a suppressor, making it particularly effective for stealth pistol characters.
The low Action Point cost is the key benefit. Rather than using V.A.T.S. for one expensive attack, a pistol build can often queue multiple shots and continue fighting from concealment. The suppressor also makes it easier to maintain a stealth-oriented approach when the encounter allows it.
Deliverer’s limitations
Deliverer is a specialized sidearm, not a replacement for a long-range rifle. It uses 10mm ammunition, has no scope modifications, and is most comfortable at close and medium range. If your character does not invest in pistol, stealth, or V.A.T.S. perks, its unique advantages are less important.
Because it is tied to Tradecraft, it also requires progress into the Railroad storyline. Players avoiding that faction or postponing its quests should use another pistol until they can access the Switchboard.

3. Spray n’ Pray: best automatic explosive crowd-control weapon
Where to find it: Buy Spray n’ Pray from Cricket, the wandering weapons merchant. She may appear at Bunker Hill, outside Vault 81, near Diamond City, near Warwick Homestead, and at other caravan stops.
Spray n’ Pray is a submachine gun with the Explosive effect. Every shot adds explosive area damage, so a burst aimed at one enemy can also hurt nearby targets. It is especially effective against groups packed into corridors, rooms, or other close formations. The weapon can also stagger enemies and benefits from the Demolition Expert perk.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This is the strongest recommendation on the list for automatic area damage, provided you can afford its ammunition and control the blast radius. It works particularly well for a Commando character who can keep enemies within close-to-medium range and maintain fire on a cluster.
Spray n’ Pray safety warning
Explosive bullets do not distinguish between enemies and everyone standing nearby. Spray n’ Pray can injure or kill companions, friendly NPCs, and the player. Avoid firing it carelessly in confined spaces, around noncombatants, or when a companion is blocking the target. If you are fighting one enemy in a crowded settlement, a conventional weapon may be safer even if it kills more slowly.
Cricket’s wandering inventory and locations can make the purchase less convenient than a fixed vendor reward. Check her when you encounter her at one of the listed caravan stops rather than assuming she will be at one particular location.
4. The Last Minute: best fixed precision weapon for crippling limbs
Where to find it: Complete the Minutemen quest Old Guns. Afterward, Ronnie Shaw becomes a weapons vendor at the Castle and sells The Last Minute.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Last Minute is a unique Gauss rifle with the Crippling effect. That gives it a clear tactical role: precise, high-impact attacks aimed at disabling enemy limbs. It is a particularly good choice for characters who prefer to control a fight by breaking a leg, arm, or other vulnerable limb rather than simply exchanging automatic fire.
Use it with Rifleman, long-range modifications, and V.A.T.S. criticals. It is most effective as an opening or priority-target weapon against dangerous enemies that can be slowed or disabled. Keep a faster weapon available for close-range fights.
The Last Minute is not the best choice for a Commando character or anyone who dislikes deliberate, precision-based shooting. It also should not be described as the universal highest-damage rifle: a well-rolled random legendary Gauss rifle can outperform it in a specialized build. Its advantage is that the useful effect is fixed and reliably obtainable after Old Guns.

5. Big Boy: best purchasable base-game explosive launcher
Where to find it: Buy Big Boy from Arturo Rodriguez in the Diamond City market.
Big Boy is a unique Two Shot Fat Man. The Two Shot effect fires an additional projectile, turning an already devastating launcher into an exceptionally destructive area-damage weapon. It is the best fixed recommendation for a player who wants a recognizable, purchasable superweapon in the base game.
It is not an efficient everyday firearm. Fat Man ammunition is scarce and expensive compared with ordinary ballistic ammunition, the weapon adds substantial weight to your inventory, and the blast can kill you or nearby allies. Carry it for bosses, large groups, or moments when overwhelming burst damage matters more than ammunition economy.
Always check your distance and the surrounding area before firing. A miniature nuclear explosion in a narrow room can solve the enemy problem and create a new player-death problem at the same time.
6. Nuka-nuke launcher: highest-impact Nuka-World heavy weapon
Where to find it: Complete the Nuka-World side quest Cappy in a Haystack, then follow the route that opens the weapon storage after dealing with John-Caleb Bradberton. The Nuka-nuke launcher and its ammunition are in Bradberton’s office vault.
The launcher fires Nuka-nukes, a more powerful ammunition variant based on mini nukes. The quest provides the launcher, three placed Nuka-nukes, and schematics that allow you to craft additional Nuka-nukes at a chemistry station.
For raw burst damage, this is the most dramatic Nuka-World weapon on the list. It is useful as an endgame novelty, a boss-killing tool, or a weapon for players who want the biggest possible explosion. Its ammunition scarcity makes it a poor replacement for a normal rifle or automatic weapon, and its collateral-damage risk is even more serious than Big Boy’s.
Nuka-nuke launcher is available only with Nuka-World. Owning the base game alone does not provide access to the quest, weapon, or ammunition schematics.
7. Splattercannon: best readily purchased Nuka-World automatic rifle
Where to find it: Buy Splattercannon from Aaron Corbett in the Nuka-Town market.
Rank #4
- Freedom and Liberty! Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
- Be whoever you want with the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. character system. From a Power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of Perks and develop your own playstyle
- New next generation graphics & lighting engine brings to life the world of Fallout. From the blasted forests of the Commonwealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
- Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage
Splattercannon is a unique handmade rifle with the Furious effect. Furious increases damage after consecutive hits on the same target, so it rewards accuracy and sustained fire against a durable enemy. Its large magazine and automatic configuration make it well suited to a Nuka-World Commando build.
The weapon is strongest when you commit to one target. Switching between several enemies interrupts the pattern that makes Furious valuable, so use it against a tough enemy while companions or another weapon handle surrounding threats.
The Problem Solver alternative
The Problem Solver has the same Furious effect and is an excellent alternative to Splattercannon. Mason awards it during An Ambitious Plan after you pass the relevant Charisma check. Choose The Problem Solver if you want the effect as a quest reward; choose Splattercannon if you prefer a guaranteed merchant purchase.
8. Kiloton Radium Rifle: best Far Harbor explosive rifle
Where to find it: Buy Kiloton Radium Rifle from Kane in the Nucleus in Far Harbor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKiloton combines a radium rifle with the Explosive legendary effect. Its attacks deal the weapon’s direct ballistic damage, the radiation damage associated with the radium rifle, and additional explosive area damage. That combination makes it powerful against groups and many high-health targets.
It is a strong choice for a player who wants rifle gameplay with more area damage than a conventional combat rifle provides. A semi-automatic configuration suits Rifleman characters, while an automatic receiver can support a Commando setup.
Use the same caution as with Spray n’ Pray: explosive splash can hurt companions, friendly NPCs, and you. Also, the displayed fire-rate value for the automatic receiver can be misleading because of a known display issue. Do not treat the Pip-Boy’s displayed number as the only way to judge the weapon’s practical performance.
Kiloton Radium Rifle requires Far Harbor and is not available in the base game.

Honorable mentions
| Weapon | Why consider it | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Old Faithful | Instigating laser weapon that is strong against full-health targets; a good fit for energy-weapon characters | Buy it from Arturo Rodriguez |
| Kellogg’s Pistol | Relentless .44 pistol that restores Action Points on a critical hit; useful for V.A.T.S. critical builds | Obtain it from Kellogg |
| The Problem Solver | Furious handmade rifle and the quest-reward alternative to Splattercannon | Earn it from Mason during An Ambitious Plan after the required Charisma check |
| Atom’s Judgment | Specialized Far Harbor melee weapon for Big Leagues characters; its radiation component is less valuable against radiation-resistant enemies | Far Harbor |
| Throatslicer | Strong Nuka-World Disciples blade for a dedicated melee build | Nuka-World |
Old Faithful is a good opening-shot energy weapon, but it is not a universal replacement for a rifle. Kellogg’s Pistol can be excellent when your build reliably generates V.A.T.S. criticals, although its .44 ammunition and default configuration make it less convenient as an everyday sidearm. Atom’s Judgment and Throatslicer are best treated as melee-build choices rather than general recommendations.

Choose by build instead of by weapon name
Rifleman
Start with a semi-automatic Overseer’s Guardian for a flexible primary weapon. Add The Last Minute when you want a precision rifle with a fixed crippling effect. Old Faithful is a reasonable alternative if your perks and equipment focus on energy weapons.
Commando
Convert Overseer’s Guardian to automatic fire for a dependable base-game rifle. Use Spray n’ Pray when groups are close together and you can manage explosive splash. In Nuka-World, Splattercannon or The Problem Solver gives you a Furious handmade rifle for sustained fire against durable targets.
Stealth and V.A.T.S.
Deliverer is the clearest match because it combines a suppressor with improved V.A.T.S. accuracy and reduced Action Point cost. Kellogg’s Pistol is a useful second option for a character built around critical hits and Action Point recovery.

Heavy weapons
Big Boy is the practical base-game choice when you need an extreme burst-damage option. The Nuka-nuke launcher is the Nuka-World upgrade in terms of impact, but its ammunition is too limited for routine use. Carry either launcher as a situational weapon rather than your only firearm.
Melee
Atom’s Judgment suits Far Harbor melee characters investing in Big Leagues. Throatslicer is a Nuka-World Disciples option for a dedicated melee build. Neither should displace a ranged weapon recommendation for a character who has not invested in melee perks.
Important acquisition and equipment warnings
- Do not confuse a fixed unique with a guaranteed best-in-slot drop. A random legendary weapon may be stronger for your exact perks and preferred effect.
- Merchants require caps. The guide does not promise a particular player level, price, or inventory refresh condition. Bring enough caps and check the relevant vendor when you reach the required location or quest stage.
- Quest and faction progress matters. Deliverer requires Tradecraft, The Last Minute requires completion of Old Guns, and The Problem Solver depends on the dialogue outcome during An Ambitious Plan.
- Explosive weapons are dangerous indoors. Spray n’ Pray, Kiloton Radium Rifle, Big Boy, and the Nuka-nuke launcher can hurt companions, friendly characters, and the player.
- Ammunition should influence your choice. Overseer’s Guardian is easier to sustain with common .45 ammunition, while Fat Man and Nuka-nuke ammunition should be reserved for high-value targets.
- DLC weapons need their DLC. Kiloton Radium Rifle and Atom’s Judgment require Far Harbor; Splattercannon, The Problem Solver, Nuka-nuke launcher, and Throatslicer require Nuka-World.
- Upgrade the weapon for the build. A named weapon’s legendary effect is fixed, but its receiver, barrel, stock, magazine, and scope can determine whether it works as a Rifleman, Commando, stealth, or precision weapon.
Bottom line
Buy Overseer’s Guardian if you want one dependable rifle that can adapt to either semi-automatic or automatic play. Get Deliverer for stealth and V.A.T.S., Spray n’ Pray for automatic explosive crowd control, and The Last Minute for precision limb crippling. Use Big Boy when the base game demands a major explosion. With Nuka-World, choose Splattercannon or The Problem Solver for automatic fire and the Nuka-nuke launcher for extreme burst damage. With Far Harbor, Kiloton Radium Rifle is the standout explosive rifle.
