The best Minecraft world-generation mod depends on what you want to change: Terralith is a strong starting point for lots of biome variety while keeping a vanilla-block look; Tectonic is for reshaping terrain; and mods such as Biomes O’ Plenty, Regions Unexplored and Oh The Biomes We’ve Gone add biomes alongside more blocks, plants, mobs or structures. These are matches to each project’s stated goals, not winners from a controlled comparison. Enable world-generation changes before creating a world, and check the exact Minecraft version, loader, file and dependencies before installing.

Which Minecraft world-generation mod should you choose?

Mod Best fit What the project describes World-generation scope
Terralith Biome variety with a vanilla-block aesthetic More than 95 new biomes, improved vanilla biomes, caves and terrain features; it uses vanilla blocks. Overworld
Tectonic Changing the shape of terrain Its stated focus is transforming terrain shape. Terrain-focused; check the selected file for its scope and compatibility.
Biomes O’ Plenty Biome additions across dimensions and more natural content New biomes in the Overworld, Nether and End, plus plants, flowers, trees and building blocks. Overworld, Nether and End
Regions Unexplored Overworld and Nether biome additions 64 new biomes, with many new blocks and items. Overworld and Nether
Oh The Biomes We’ve Gone A newer sequel-style option with substantial extra content 50+ biomes, unique mobs, structures and hundreds of blocks; the listing shows files for multiple loaders and versions. Check the selected file and project listing for its scope.
Oh The Biomes You’ll Go Players staying on a legacy Minecraft version 80+ biomes; the latest release shown in the listing is for Minecraft 1.19.4 Forge. Check the selected file and project listing for its scope.

Biome totals are descriptions published by the projects, not standardized measures of quality. Supported versions and available files can change; the linked project listings are the place to confirm what currently matches your installation.

How the options differ

For a vanilla-block look: Terralith

Terralith is the clearest fit if you want varied landscapes and biomes without adding a large set of unfamiliar blocks. Its project listing describes more than 95 new biomes alongside changes to vanilla biomes, caves and terrain features. It is offered as a mod for supported loaders and as a datapack. The project specifically advises starting a new world rather than adding it to an existing save.

For more dramatic landforms: Tectonic

Tectonic’s stated purpose is to change terrain shape, so it is the focused choice when the landscape itself matters more than a large catalog of new biome content. Its supported Minecraft versions and loaders vary. Choose the exact file for your game version and loader rather than assuming one download works everywhere.

For biomes plus added blocks and items

Biomes O’ Plenty spans the Overworld, Nether and End and adds plants, flowers, trees and building blocks along with biomes. Regions Unexplored covers the Overworld and Nether and describes 64 new biomes plus many new blocks and items. Oh The Biomes We’ve Gone combines 50+ biomes with unique mobs, structures and hundreds of blocks. These projects suit players looking for world-generation changes that also bring additional content into the game.

For an older setup: Oh The Biomes You’ll Go

Oh The Biomes You’ll Go may suit a player committed to an older installation, but it should not be treated as the default for current Minecraft. The latest release shown in its listing is Minecraft 1.19.4 Forge. Confirm that release matches your game and loader before choosing it.

Check version, loader and dependencies before installing

Minecraft version and mod loader are part of the compatibility decision, not details to sort out after downloading. On the project page, select a file that matches your Minecraft version and loader, then read the requirements attached to that release. Do not rely on a guide for a different file generation: dependencies can change between releases of the same mod.

Regions Unexplored requirements

Regions Unexplored has different listed dependencies depending on release generation. Version 0.6 and later lists Lithostitched 1.7.9 or later, and Fabric API when using Fabric. Versions 0.5.9 and earlier list TerraBlender, with Forge Config API Port for Fabric. Verify the requirements on the particular file you intend to use.

Compatibility is specific to the combination

Terralith’s FAQ describes compatibility with the mod version of Tectonic; for datapacks, it directs users to Terratonic instead. It also says Terralith can be combined with Biomes O’ Plenty, but the resulting biomes may be small and recommends using one or the other for the best experience. Other biome-mod compatibility described on its page may rely on TerraBlender, and Terralith biomes can be rare and tiny in those combinations.

Tectonic says it supports biome mods using TerraBlender or Biolith, including Biomes O’ Plenty and Regions Unexplored, and has a special Terralith-compatible version. That is not a blanket guarantee for every combination or release. Check the current instructions for each project and the exact files you plan to use.

Start a new world for world-generation changes

World-generation mods affect terrain as chunks are created. Terralith’s project page explicitly says not to add it to an existing world and advises resetting or using a new world. Already-generated chunks will remain part of the save, so adding a mod later does not turn the existing world into a clean test of its generation. Before creating a world, settle on the mod combination you want and enable it for that world.

Will adding more world-generation mods make Minecraft slower?

There is no controlled performance comparison here that establishes a fastest option. Terralith’s FAQ warns that using too many world-generation mods can slow chunk generation, but that is not a comparative timing result for the mods in this list. Avoid stacking several generation changes without checking compatibility, and judge performance on your own setup rather than treating biome counts as a speed measure.
