Some titles remain purchasable through newer Xbox storefronts, many games with disc editions can still be found secondhand, and certain digital-only releases have no verified ordinary purchase route. The best games to prioritize are therefore the ones whose specific Xbox 360 versions matter to you—especially digital-only titles, games with sought-after DLC, and favorites you want to keep playable offline.
What “disappearing” means for Xbox 360 games
Microsoft ended new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store on console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace on July 29, 2024. The closure applied to games, DLC, and other entertainment content. It did not disable access to everything players already owned: Microsoft says purchased games and DLC remain playable, and previously purchased games can be redownloaded.

The closure changed the route to a game, not necessarily whether the game can be played. Microsoft said hundreds of backward-compatible Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games and DLC would remain available for purchase on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. Whether that applies to a particular title—and which edition or add-ons are listed—needs to be checked on its current listing. Microsoft’s closure announcement and FAQ
For scale, Video Games Chronicle’s 2023 analysis counted nearly 500 Games on Demand titles—games that also had physical releases—and 619 titles in the North American Arcade section. It estimated that around 220 digital-only games would leave commerce after excluding backward-compatible and already-delisted titles. Xbox 360 games worth checking first
Microsoft published a Marketplace update listing titles that “may be removed.” It is a useful starting point for a preservation shortlist, not confirmation that a title is unavailable now or permanently lost. Check the Xbox listing and physical edition status before deciding how to get any specific game.

Microsoft’s Marketplace update is the source for the “may be removed” candidates above. Neither list should be read as a definitive current ranking of the best games or as proof that a named game has vanished.
Choose a route: newer Xbox store, disc, or preservation of the original version
Check newer Xbox storefronts for compatible games
If a title is backward compatible, its listing may remain purchasable through an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console or Xbox.com. Confirm the exact game and edition on the current listing rather than assuming compatibility or availability based on an old list. Xbox says it put more than 500,000 hours into testing backward-compatible games for Xbox Series X|S; that is Xbox’s stated testing effort, not the number of Xbox 360 games in the program. Look for a disc when the game had a physical release
A disc can be the most dependable way to preserve access to a physical-release Xbox 360 game that is no longer sold digitally. Microsoft says compatible Xbox 360 disc games require the disc in the drive to play on supported Xbox consoles. Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot use a physical Xbox 360 disc. A used disc’s condition, included inserts, and edition can vary, and a disc does not provide DLC that was sold separately.
For non-compatible Games on Demand titles that had physical releases, VGC notes that the disc version can still be played on original Xbox 360 hardware. A disc is not a workaround for a digital-only game, and it does not make that title backward compatible. Separate the Xbox 360 release from later editions
A game may have a later release on another console or PC without that release preserving the original Xbox 360 version. If your priority is the 360 edition—its specific content, presentation, or place in a collection—verify that exact edition and its purchase route. VGC notes that some games received later Xbox One versions; those are distinct releases, not proof that the Xbox 360 build remains available.

The store closure also ended new purchases of Xbox 360 DLC through the old marketplace. If an add-on matters, check whether it is included in a later edition, separately listed on a current Xbox storefront, or unavailable for new purchase. Owning the base game does not establish that its DLC is included.

Multiplayer is a separate question from owning or downloading the game. Microsoft says purchased games can continue to connect to multiplayer only while the publisher continues supporting the relevant servers. Can you still buy or redownload Xbox 360 games?
You can no longer make new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store or Xbox 360 Marketplace. Some backward-compatible titles and DLC remain purchasable through newer Xbox storefronts, while games with physical editions may be available used. For digital-only titles that are not compatible or reissued, the old marketplace closure may leave no ordinary new-purchase route for the Xbox 360 version. Availability is title-specific.

A practical checklist before you buy
- Identify the version you want. Decide whether a later release is acceptable or whether you specifically want the Xbox 360 edition.
- Search current Xbox listings. Check the title and its DLC on Xbox.com or a newer Xbox console; verify the edition and purchase option rather than relying on historical candidate or discount lists.
- Check for a physical edition. If buying used, confirm the disc is for Xbox 360, inspect its condition, and make sure your console can read it. For compatible play on a newer console, the disc must remain inserted; Xbox Series S cannot use discs.
- Confirm completeness. Check whether the disc or later edition includes the content you want, or whether add-ons were separate purchases that are no longer available.
- Check online dependencies. If multiplayer is the reason to buy, verify that the publisher still operates the relevant servers.
- Keep prior purchases tied to your account. Purchased content remains eligible for redownload under Microsoft’s stated policy, though this does not create a new purchase route for someone who never owned it.
