The Crew Motorfest on Switch 2: Download Size, Storage Needs, and SD Card Setup

By VGSources Team 9 min read

The Crew Motorfest is listed at 58.5 GB on Nintendo’s US Nintendo eShop listing for Switch 2, checked October 13, 2026. That is the current listed game-file size, not a guarantee that the final occupied space will never change after updates or downloadable content.

You do not automatically need an SD card. Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, although some of that space is reserved for system use and whatever you have already installed reduces the remaining capacity. Check your free system memory first. If it cannot accommodate the download and future updates, use a microSD Express card; a standard microSD card cannot store or load Switch 2 games.

The short answer: 58.5 GB, with internal storage optional

Nintendo’s US product listing gives the Switch 2 edition of The Crew Motorfest a download size of 58.5 GB. The listing was checked on October 13, 2026, so confirm the live eShop page immediately before downloading because game data and listings can change. See the Nintendo product listing for the current figure.

The number describes the listed game file. It should not be read as a promise that every installation will occupy exactly 58.5 GB forever. Patches, downloadable content and later revisions can alter the space required. Nintendo advises checking the eShop listing or the packaging for the game-specific requirement before purchase or download; its guidance is in Nintendo’s “Not Enough Space to Download Digital Content on Nintendo Switch 2” support article.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal storage, but Nintendo says some of that capacity is reserved for system use. Your usable free space is therefore lower than 256 GB and depends on other games, updates, screenshots, videos and downloadable content already on the console. Nintendo also says that, at present, no individual Switch 2 game requires additional storage merely to play. If the console has enough free internal space, you can download Motorfest without buying a card.

If free space is insufficient, expand the console with a microSD Express card. Nintendo supports cards up to 2 TB. The card must be Express: an ordinary microSD card is not a substitute for Switch 2 game storage.

How much space should you have before starting?

Use the 58.5 GB figure as the minimum planning number

Plan around the current 58.5 GB listing, then leave additional headroom if you expect updates or other content. The listing is the only Switch 2-specific size figure in the available official material. Do not substitute the PC requirement shown on another store page: the Ubisoft Store page lists a 40 GB requirement in its PC system requirements section, not for Switch 2. That page is Ubisoft’s “Buy The Crew Motorfest” store page.

Why 256 GB does not mean 256 GB free

The advertised internal capacity includes space used by the operating system and other system data. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Data Management FAQ explains that some storage is reserved and that the remaining space changes as you install software. A new console with little installed software will show more free space than a console containing several large games, patches and captures.

Before buying or downloading, open the console’s Data Management area and check the available internal memory rather than relying on the 256 GB headline. Compare that free-space figure with the current eShop requirement. If it is comfortably above 58.5 GB, internal storage may be all you need for the initial download. If it is close to the requirement, an Express card gives you room for updates and other games instead of forcing you to delete software later.

Internal memory or microSD Express?

There are two valid storage routes for this game: use the console’s internal memory, or install a compatible microSD Express card and use its expanded capacity. The choice depends on the free space you have now, whether you already own an Express card, and how many other downloaded games you plan to keep installed.

Storage option What it can do Important requirement Best fit
Switch 2 internal system memory Stores downloaded games, updates and DLC when sufficient free capacity is available The 256 GB total includes space reserved for system use and existing installations Players with enough free space who do not want to buy an accessory
microSD Express card Expands space for downloaded software, updates and DLC Switch 2 compatibility requires microSD Express; Nintendo supports capacities up to 2 TB Players short on internal space or building a larger digital library
Standard microSD card Can load screenshots and videos previously captured on a standard card Cannot save or load Switch 2 games Existing capture-media use only, not Motorfest installation

Nintendo’s compatibility guidance states that “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards” for game storage. Read the full explanation at Nintendo’s microSD Card and microSD Express Card Compatibility support page.

Setting up a microSD Express card

Use this sequence if the console does not have enough internal space or you want to reserve internal memory for other software.

  1. Confirm the game’s current requirement. Open the live Nintendo eShop listing for the Switch 2 edition and check the storage information. Nintendo specifically recommends checking the listing or physical packaging because requirements are game-specific. For the current US listing, the figure is 58.5 GB.
  2. Check internal free space. In the console’s Data Management area, note the available system memory and the software already installed. The 256 GB specification is total capacity, not guaranteed free capacity.
  3. Buy or identify a card marked “microSD Express.” Do not assume that a card used in an original Nintendo Switch will work for Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo distinguishes Express cards from standard microSD cards. A card may be physically the same size while using a different performance and compatibility standard.
  4. Insert the Express card while the console is off or following Nintendo’s hardware instructions. The first time an Express card is used, Nintendo says an internet system update is required. Connect the console to the internet and complete that update when prompted.
  5. Allow the console to prepare the card. After the compatibility update, the card can be used for downloaded software, updates and DLC. Follow the on-screen prompts if the console asks to format or configure it; formatting can erase data already on the card, so copy anything you need before accepting a destructive prompt.
  6. Start the eShop download. Recheck the destination and the available capacity, then begin the download. If the card is present and usable, Switch 2 can use expanded storage for the game and related downloads.
  7. Keep save-data expectations separate. Nintendo says Switch 2 save data remains in system memory and cannot be saved or copied to the Express card. Moving the game itself to expanded storage does not move the save.

Nintendo’s support pages are the authority for the current card procedure and system-update requirement. If the console does not recognize a card, stop downloading and verify that its label says microSD Express, that the card is seated correctly, and that the required internet update has completed.

What the physical edition changes—and what it does not prove

Ubisoft announced a physical retail edition and a digital Nintendo eShop edition for Switch 2, with launch on October 8, 2026. The announcement is available in Ubisoft’s Switch 2 release news.

  • Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

A physical box does not automatically mean that no storage is needed. The available announcement does not establish whether every regional physical package contains all game data on the card, requires a download, or receives substantial post-launch updates. Check the exact package and region before assuming that the retail version avoids internal or Express-card storage. Nintendo says the packaging and the eShop listing carry the game-specific storage information.

Even when a physical card contains the playable software, updates and downloadable content can still consume storage. If your goal is to keep several games installed, an Express card may remain useful with the physical edition; it is simply not proven by the release announcement to be mandatory for every copy.

Internet, account and online-play requirements

Internet connection

Ubisoft says an online connection is required to play the Switch 2 version. Downloading the game is therefore not the same as making it an offline title. A complete download can still require an internet connection when you launch or play, depending on the game’s current service checks.

Account and subscription language varies by region

Nintendo’s UK listing names a Ubisoft account and a persistent internet connection. It also says that online multiplayer and features require an applicable platform subscription. That is regional listing language, not a universal statement about every market. Review the requirements shown for your country before purchase. The UK product page is Nintendo UK’s listing for The Crew Motorfest.

The safest universal conclusion from the available official announcements is that an internet connection is required to play. Whether a particular subscription is needed for multiplayer or connected features should be confirmed in the reader’s regional Nintendo listing and account terms.

Save data, updates and DLC: the storage details people miss

Save data stays in system memory

Installing the game on an Express card does not relocate its saves. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ says Switch 2 save data remains in system memory and cannot be saved or copied to the Express card. Treat the card as a place for software, updates and DLC, not as a backup destination for progress.

Updates can change the amount of free space you need

The 58.5 GB listing is a current snapshot of the game file. Future updates can require additional download space, and the final occupied space can differ from the initial listing. If your free space is only barely above 58.5 GB, you may encounter a capacity warning when an update or additional content is released. Leaving room beyond the listed size reduces that risk.

DLC uses the same storage decision

Nintendo says an Express card can store downloadable software, updates and DLC. If you plan to add content later, count it as part of the library you are designing rather than treating the base-game figure as a permanent ceiling. No specific DLC size or required card capacity is established here, so do not buy a particular capacity on the assumption that this game demands it.

Troubleshooting common storage problems

The console says there is not enough space

  • Recheck the current eShop listing; the requirement can change.
  • Review free system memory rather than the 256 GB total specification.
  • Delete or archive other software you no longer need, or expand with a microSD Express card.
  • Leave headroom for updates instead of targeting exactly the listed 58.5 GB.

Nintendo’s step-by-step storage guidance is in its not-enough-space support article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The card is rejected or unavailable for game storage

  • Check the label: it must say microSD Express.
  • Do not use a standard microSD card for Switch 2 game installation. Standard cards can still load screenshots and videos previously captured on them.
  • Connect to the internet and complete the first-use system update required for Express cards.
  • Power down and reseat the card according to Nintendo’s hardware instructions, then check the compatibility guidance again.

Nintendo’s compatibility article, including the 2 TB maximum supported capacity, is at this support page.

The game downloads but will not start offline

That behavior is consistent with Ubisoft’s statement that an online connection is required to play. Check the console’s internet connection and the account or regional subscription requirements shown for your edition rather than assuming a storage problem.

You expected saves on the Express card

That is not how Switch 2 handles this game data. Nintendo says saves remain in system memory and cannot be copied to the Express card. The card expands software capacity; it is not a save-data backup device.

A practical purchase and download checklist

  1. Confirm that you are looking at the Switch 2 edition, not a PC listing or another platform.
  2. Record the live eShop size. Nintendo’s US listing showed 58.5 GB when checked October 13, 2026.
  3. Check free internal space and remember that 256 GB is the console’s total capacity before system reservation and existing content.
  4. Decide whether the available space leaves room for updates and any DLC you expect to install.
  5. If you need expansion, choose a microSD Express card; standard microSD is not valid for Switch 2 game storage.
  6. Complete the required internet system update when the Express card is first used.
  7. Keep save data in system memory and do not treat the card as a save backup.
  8. Read the exact physical package or regional eShop listing if you are buying the retail edition.
  9. Confirm internet, account and subscription requirements for your region before relying on online features.

Bottom line for Switch 2 owners

The current answer is straightforward: budget 58.5 GB for the Switch 2 eShop version of The Crew Motorfest, check your actual free internal storage, and buy a microSD Express card only if that space is insufficient or you want room for a larger library. Nintendo does not list an additional card as mandatory for this individual game when internal memory is adequate.

Use Express rather than standard microSD for game data, complete the first-use internet update, and remember that saves remain in system memory. The game also requires an internet connection to play, while account and platform-subscription terms should be checked against the listing for your region.
