The Crew Shows How a Single-Player Game Can Depend on Ubisoft’s Servers

The Crew’s shutdown shows why a single-player mode does not guarantee offline access—and why one Ubisoft shutdown should not be generalized to every game.

Ubisoft said The Crew would stop being accessible on every listed platform after its servers shut down on March 31, 2024. The case is a warning for players: a game can have a single-player mode without being playable offline. It does not establish that Ubisoft has revoked access to all of its single-player games.

What happened to The Crew?

In a December 14, 2023 announcement, Ubisoft said The Crew, its editions and virtual currency packs would be removed from online stores. Owners could continue playing until March 31, 2024. Ubisoft said that after the servers shut down, the game would no longer be accessible on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna or Ubisoft+. The company cited upcoming server-infrastructure and licensing constraints. (Ubisoft’s announcement)

Ubisoft’s stated outcome was total inaccessibility, not merely the loss of multiplayer features. In a 2024 California complaint, plaintiffs allege that the game required a permanent internet connection even for single-player and that the shutdown removed access to both single-player and multiplayer. Those are allegations in a lawsuit, not a court finding. (California complaint)

Why “single-player” does not always mean “offline”

“Single-player” describes a way to play: one person can play without competing or cooperating with other players. “Offline” describes whether the game can run without connecting to a publisher’s servers. Those are different properties. A game may include a solo campaign but still rely on a server for authentication, saving, progression or other essential functions.

For preservation and long-term access, the practical question is not simply whether a game has a single-player mode. It is whether that mode still works when the publisher’s servers are unavailable—and whether the publisher has a plan to replace the service or release an offline patch. Ubisoft’s announcement about The Crew makes that distinction concrete: the company said server closure would make the entire game inaccessible.

Not every Ubisoft shutdown has the same effect

Ubisoft’s own 2022 decommissioning update described narrower outcomes for selected games. For certain single-player DLC, PC owners had to activate the content before October 1, 2022 to keep playing it; the same DLC remained downloadable on consoles. Ubisoft also described an update to Anno 2070 intended to replace older online services and preserve online features. (Ubisoft’s decommissioning update)

These examples differ in what players lose: a game may become inaccessible, a feature may stop working, or a previously acquired DLC may remain playable only if it was activated before a deadline. Ubisoft’s announcements do not support treating the The Crew shutdown as proof that every Ubisoft single-player game will meet the same fate.

What the legal disputes and EU initiative do—and do not—show

The California complaint alleges consumer-protection, advertising, fraud and warranty violations connected to The Crew becoming inaccessible. A separate March 31, 2026 PC Gamer report says French consumer group UFC-Que Choisir filed suit against Ubisoft over the shutdown. A filing or reported lawsuit is not a judgment of liability; the available information here does not establish a final court outcome. (PC Gamer’s report)

In Europe, the Stop Destroying Videogames European Citizens’ Initiative was submitted to the European Commission on January 26, 2026 after meeting its thresholds. The Commission records a February 2026 meeting with organisers and a European Parliament public hearing on April 16, 2026. These are steps in a policy process, not a new law by themselves. The Commission’s communication discusses how server-dependent shutdowns can affect some or all of a game and records differing views on whether publishers should have a general obligation to preserve playability. Can Ubisoft revoke access to a single-player game?

The Crew shows that Ubisoft announced the end of access to a game with single-player play when its servers closed. Whether a publisher may lawfully withdraw access in a particular case is a separate question. It can depend on the product description and terms presented at purchase, the facts of the shutdown and the buyer’s jurisdiction; the legal claims about this case have not been established as court findings here.

Questions to ask before buying a server-dependent game

  • Does it require a persistent connection? Check the store description and the publisher’s support information, especially for games advertised with solo play.
  • Which parts depend on servers? A connection may be needed for the whole game, or only for multiplayer, progression, authentication or particular content.
  • What happens if support ends? Look for a shutdown notice or policy explaining whether play continues offline, features are removed, DLC must be activated by a deadline, or access ends altogether.
  • Is an offline option or replacement service available? A patch or replacement server can preserve access, but do not assume one will be provided unless the publisher says so.
  • What remedies apply where you live? Store and publisher terms do not settle every consumer-rights question; relevant rights can vary by jurisdiction and circumstance.
