Choose The Division 2 if Washington, DC, its documented solo and four-player co-op options, and its later expansion path appeal more. You do not have to play the first game before starting the sequel; playing it first is a preference for more story context, not a verified mechanical requirement.

Should you play The Division before The Division 2?
Play the first game first if experiencing the series in release order and gaining its earlier narrative context matter to you. The available publisher information does not establish that the first game is mechanically required before beginning the sequel, so you can start with The Division 2 if its setting or play options are the stronger draw.
Which game fits your priorities?
Choose The Division: Definitive Edition for its named first-game expansions
The clearest reason to pick the first game is the specific package: Ubisoft says The Division: Definitive Edition includes the base game, Underground, Survival, Last Stand, and cosmetic content. If those expansions are what you want, check that the store listing actually says “Definitive Edition” and shows the expected contents before buying. The included expansions distinguish this edition from a base-game listing.
Choose The Division 2 for its documented modes and Washington setting
Ubisoft’s launch announcement describes The Division 2 as a seamless online game with a story campaign, endgame progression, three Dark Zones, and 4v4 Skirmish and Domination. It explicitly supports solo play or co-op with up to four players. Those details make it possible to compare its documented options with your preferences, but they do not prove it is better for every solo player or for every kind of PvP play.

What The Division 2’s Warlords of New York expansion adds
Warlords of New York takes the action to Lower Manhattan. Ubisoft’s 2020 announcement describes added seasons and endgame progression, a reworked Dark Zone, and changes to weapons and gear. Treat it as expansion content rather than an automatic feature of the base game, and check whether the edition you are considering includes it.
There is one important time-sensitive exception: Ubisoft’s 2026 anniversary announcement said Warlords of New York would be free to existing owners on all platforms for the duration of the anniversary season. That was a limited-time offer, not proof that the expansion is permanently included with the base game. Check the current regional store listing and terms before relying on it.

How to avoid buying the wrong edition
- Open the listing for your platform and region. Ubisoft’s US store lists The Division 2 for PC, PS4, Xbox, and Steam, but that does not guarantee identical local availability or packages.
- Read the edition name and contents. For the first game, look for the Definitive Edition if you want Underground, Survival, and Last Stand. For The Division 2, verify separately whether Warlords of New York is included or offered at no cost under a current promotion.
- Check the final price and offer conditions at checkout. Prices, bundle contents, platform availability, and temporary promotions can change; the cited publisher pages do not establish a current universal price.
- For PC, use the current requirements shown by the platform or publisher before purchasing. The Ubisoft Store page’s displayed PC requirements are old enough that they should not be treated as a current compatibility guarantee.
What is known—and not established—in a direct comparison
Ubisoft’s available launch and store material documents specific features for The Division 2, while the cited material for The Division chiefly establishes what the 2026 Definitive Edition contains. That imbalance does not mean the first game lacks features; it means a feature-by-feature comparison should not fill gaps with assumptions. The publisher material cited here also does not establish a fair current comparison of player counts, sales, review scores, prices, or performance.
Ubisoft announced plans for further Division 2 seasons after the anniversary season, including expanded crossplay, an Incursion, Classified Assignments, and Central Park DLC. These were announced plans, not confirmation that each item has shipped; consult current official updates for delivery status.
