The edible Wonka-inspired Xbox controller was real, but it was not a retail product. Microsoft’s Xbox announced the collaboration on November 13, 2023, as a Warner Bros. Pictures promotion for Wonka. The chocolate controller, custom console, and themed accessories were offered as sweepstakes prizes—not sold as a normal Xbox bundle.

What was in the Wonka Xbox prize package?
The package combined a functional Xbox setup with confectionery replicas and film-themed extras:
- A custom Xbox Series X: The console was styled like a Wonka chocolate bar and presented in a custom storefront-style display. It was a working console, but it was not edible.
- A standard black Xbox Wireless Controller: This was the functional controller included alongside the promotional hardware.
- A custom burgundy Xbox Wireless Controller: Its color and styling were inspired by Willy Wonka’s coat in the film. Unlike the chocolate version, it was a working game controller.
- An edible chocolate controller: Xbox described this novelty confection as being made from 100% pure chocolate and wrapped in a signature gold wrapper.
- Five additional chocolate truffles: The truffles had gaming-themed names and flavor concepts.
- Three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: This subscription was included in contemporaneous prize-package reporting and the official contest rules.
The chocolate controller could not play Xbox games
The most important distinction is between the two custom controllers. The burgundy controller was an ordinary, usable Xbox Wireless Controller with Wonka-inspired styling. The chocolate controller was a food item shaped like an Xbox controller. It contained no gaming electronics and could not connect to an Xbox Series X, PC, or other device.

Xbox presented it as the first official edible Xbox controller. Promotional footage showed Xbox staff handling and eating the chocolate version, but that content was marketing material rather than independent testing of its taste, durability, or food-production quality. There is no reliable basis for treating it as a commercially manufactured gaming accessory.
Was the Wonka Xbox Series X available to buy?
No—not through ordinary retail. Xbox’s announcement explicitly said the prizes were “limited to sweepstakes only” and “not available for retail.” The official rules likewise described the console, controllers, chocolate controller, and other items as prizes in a Warner Bros./Wonka promotion.
That means descriptions such as “Microsoft’s new retail Wonka console” or “buy the edible Xbox controller” are misleading. The accurate description is a Wonka-themed sweepstakes prize package containing a chocolate controller and a non-edible custom Xbox Series X.

How the sweepstakes worked
The promotion began on November 13, 2023, and ended on December 14, 2023. Xbox directed people to enter through its account on X, formerly known as Twitter. The official rules identified the promotion as a Warner Bros./Wonka contest and listed the edible chocolate controller, edible chocolate bundle, and Wonka Xbox Series X among the prizes.
The timing was tied to the film’s theatrical release. Wonka opened internationally beginning December 6, 2023, and opened in the United States on December 15, 2023. The Xbox activation was therefore a film-marketing event, not the launch of a new Xbox hardware edition.
Why the console looked like a chocolate bar
The promotion connected Xbox hardware with the world of Willy Wonka. Wonka follows a young Willy Wonka before he becomes the familiar chocolatier associated with Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The chocolate-bar-style console, gold-wrapped controller, custom burgundy gamepad, and truffles all extended that theme into gaming hardware.

Xbox also created Wonka-inspired displays and puzzle-box experiences at Microsoft Experience Centres in New York, London, and Sydney. Those installations were experiential marketing elements. They were not evidence that Microsoft had placed a Wonka Xbox product line in stores.

Can you still get the chocolate Xbox controller?
The original sweepstakes dates have passed, and the primary announcements do not establish a current official retail channel. The chocolate controller and custom console should therefore be treated as unavailable through normal retail unless an independently verified, authenticated secondary-market listing says otherwise.
Be especially cautious with listings using phrases such as “official Wonka Xbox controller,” “new edible Xbox controller,” or “Wonka Series X bundle.” A seller may be offering ordinary Xbox hardware with themed packaging, an unofficial replica, a piece of promotional merchandise, or a listing that incorrectly implies retail availability. The original promotion did not establish a standard product SKU, production quantity, or ordinary retail price.

What can you buy instead?
If the appeal is the gaming hardware rather than the one-off confection, a current Xbox Wireless Controller is the practical substitute. It provides the functional controller experience associated with the prize package, but it is not the burgundy Wonka edition and should not be advertised as one.
For a physical tie-in, readers can look for licensed Wonka film media, Willy Wonka books, or verified collectibles. Check the exact edition, licensing information, seller, condition, and current availability before buying. A listing for a generic chocolate gift or fan-made item is not evidence that it came from the Xbox promotion.
Where to watch Wonka
For viewers interested in the film that inspired the activation, current U.S. availability guides have listed Wonka on Max and through the HBO Max Amazon Channel. Bottom line
Microsoft and Warner Bros. really did create an edible Xbox-shaped chocolate novelty for the Wonka promotion. But the chocolate item was not a functional controller, and the complete package was not a retail bundle. It was a limited 2023 sweepstakes prize containing a working custom Xbox Series X, a usable burgundy controller, a separate 100% chocolate controller, truffles, and three months of Game Pass Ultimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Could the Wonka chocolate Xbox controller actually play games?
No. The edible controller was made from 100% pure chocolate and was a novelty confection, not an electronic Xbox Wireless Controller. It could not connect to an Xbox or play games.
Could you buy the Wonka Xbox Series X bundle?
No. Xbox announced the console and related items as sweepstakes prizes and said they were not available for retail. The promotion ran from November 13 through December 14, 2023.
What came in the Wonka Xbox prize package?
The package included a chocolate-bar-inspired Xbox Series X, a standard black controller, a working burgundy Wonka-inspired controller, a separate chocolate controller, five themed truffles, and three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
Is the edible Wonka Xbox controller still available?
The sweepstakes has ended, and the original announcements do not identify an official retail channel. A secondary-market listing should be treated cautiously and independently authenticated.
The Bottom Line
The Wonka chocolate Xbox controller was a real promotional confection, not a game-ready accessory or retail product. The entire package was distributed through a 2023 sweepstakes tied to the Wonka film, so buyers should be wary of listings that present it as a currently available Microsoft bundle.
