On April 15, 2025, Game Informer reported that images of the then-unannounced The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered had appeared on the website of its reported developer, Virtuos. The images reportedly included comparisons between the original and updated visuals, key art and a Deluxe Edition image. Bethesda confirmed the project and released it a week later, on April 22, 2025.
What leaked from the Oblivion Remastered developer website?
Game Informer’s April 15, 2025 report said fans found images on Virtuos’ website, where they circulated on social media, forums and image galleries. The report described before-and-after comparisons of the original game and its updated visuals, along with key art that included an image of the Deluxe Edition and its contents. Game Informer also reported that Virtuos’ website was down when the story was published. The report did not establish when the files were uploaded or exactly how long they were accessible. Game Informer’s April 15 report is the contemporaneous account.
Were the Oblivion Remastered leaks real?
The images were reported as a leak before Bethesda had announced the game; Game Informer said Bethesda and Virtuos had not commented by the time its report was published. That reporting is distinct from official confirmation. On April 22, 2025, Bethesda Game Studios published a launch retrospective confirming the project and its work with Virtuos. The game also released that day, according to Steam’s listing. Bethesda described the result as a remaster rather than a remake, writing: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.” Bethesda’s launch retrospective provides the studio’s account.
What Bethesda said the remaster changed
Bethesda said development began in 2021 and that it worked with Virtuos to update art, animation, special effects, parts of the world, voices and game systems while preserving the original game and its core. Steam lists Bethesda Game Studios and Virtuos as developers. The leak report’s visual comparisons offered an early glimpse; Bethesda’s retrospective later supplied the studio’s framing of the project.
