To run different prerecorded loops at the same time, create a separate YouTube Live stream for each feed and run an independently configured FFmpeg process for each one on the VPS. Size the server for the combined outbound bitrate and, if you are transcoding, the combined encoding workload. There is no universal number of streams a VPS can handle: the answer depends on the plan, media, and settings.
How YouTube maps broadcasts to incoming streams
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast—the viewer-facing live event—from a stream, the incoming audio-video feed. YouTube documents a broadcast as “an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens.” A broadcast is bound to one stream. Its API documentation describes separate streams for broadcasts that may run simultaneously with different settings. Google for Developers: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
- Different loops at the same time: create a distinct stream for each broadcast, then send each loop to its matching YouTube ingest destination.
- Recurring broadcasts at different times: a reusable stream can be associated with broadcasts that do not overlap.
- The same feed in concurrent broadcasts: YouTube documents binding one incoming stream to multiple simultaneous broadcasts when they intentionally carry the same content. This does not create independent loops.
For separate content, the practical VPS layout is one media input and one separately supervised FFmpeg process per feed. Each process must use the intended ingest destination and stream key. One FFmpeg process does not automatically create independent content feeds.
Prepare the YouTube streams and VPS
- Create a broadcast and stream in YouTube Live Control Room for each loop. Keep a clear mapping of the broadcast, source file, process, and ingest target so you can identify which feed is which.
- Choose and verify encoder settings for each feed. Match codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe behavior to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the stream-health feedback in Live Control Room. The supported ranges depend on the selected codec and video settings; do not assume one bitrate fits every feed. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Check the OVHcloud plan’s resources. Compare its public bandwidth, vCPU, RAM, and NVMe storage with the combined workload. OVHcloud lists those dimensions on its current VPS page; configurations and terms can vary by market and change over time. OVHcloud VPS plans.
- Prepare distinct processes, logs, and recovery behavior. Use separate service units or equivalent supervision, per-feed logs, and a restart policy so a failure can be isolated. A supervisor can restart a crashed encoder, but cannot prevent a VPS, network, input-file, or YouTube-side interruption.
Treat each stream key as a credential. Avoid putting a live key in a public script, shared logs, or shell history; use a private configuration or secret mechanism appropriate to your server setup.

Estimate bandwidth, CPU, memory, and storage
Outbound bandwidth
Add the configured bitrate of every concurrent feed, including audio, then allow headroom for protocol overhead and variation. As a YouTube encoder reference, its current table lists H.264 at 1080p/60 fps as 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended; at 1080p/30 fps it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. For AV1/H.265, the corresponding 1080p/60 fps figures are 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended, and at 1080p/30 fps they are 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube guidance values, not measurements of your VPS. Use the row for the codec and frame rate you actually select, and compare the aggregate with the plan’s public bandwidth.
CPU and memory
Copying a compatible pre-encoded stream generally uses less compute than encoding every frame, while transcoding gives you more control over output settings at a CPU cost. Actual load depends on the input, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and number of simultaneous processes. Account for the operating system and all concurrent FFmpeg processes in memory planning. Do not infer a safe stream count from vCPU or RAM alone; test on the chosen plan with representative feeds.

Storage and isolation
Include retained media files and logs when checking storage. Separate service units, restart behavior, and logs help you determine which feed failed without conflating several processes. These are operational design choices, not guarantees of uninterrupted broadcasting.

For another feed, create another independently supervised process with its own input and matching YouTube ingest destination. Do not reuse a key or target by accident. Keep secrets out of shared shell history and public files; environment-variable use in an example does not by itself make a key safe if the surrounding scripts or logs expose it.
Test and monitor every feed before leaving it unattended
- Start each feed with sound and moving video representative of the final material.
- Check the relevant YouTube stream’s health and configuration messages in Live Control Room. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Inspect that process’s logs for input-read, encoder, and network errors.
- Compare the combined configured bitrate with actual VPS egress and the plan’s public bandwidth; check CPU load if transcoding multiple feeds.
- Let the test run long enough to check loop boundaries, audio continuity, file permissions, and restart behavior.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API health-status documentation lists issues such as unsupported video codec, low or high bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing or multiple audio/video streams, and video-ingestion starvation. It identifies H.264 as a supported video codec and AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Use the per-stream health messages to guide corrections. Google for Developers: LiveStreams API.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The wrong loop appears on a broadcast, or two broadcasts show the same feed. | Confirm each process’s input file, broadcast mapping, ingest destination, and stream key. | Correct the mapping and restart only the affected process. |
| YouTube reports a configuration or codec issue. | Read the stream-health message and check codec, bitrate, frame rate, and audio/video stream configuration. | Adjust the encoder to current YouTube guidance, then verify the health message clears. |
| The stream stalls or YouTube reports video-ingestion starvation. | Check FFmpeg input-read and network logs, VPS egress, and whether the source file remains readable. | Resolve the input or network fault and confirm the process is sending in real time. |
| Several feeds become unstable when transcoding. | Check whether CPU saturation coincides with late or dropped frames. | Reduce encoding workload or test a plan with more suitable resources; benchmark with the intended settings rather than assuming a stream count. |
| A process stops and does not resume. | Check its exit status, logs, service configuration, permissions, and restart policy. | Fix the underlying error and verify the supervisor restarts that feed independently. |
| A stream fails after a long run or at a loop boundary. | Check file permissions, input readability, audio, and the transition between the end and start of the media. | Run a longer representative test and correct the media or process configuration before unattended operation. |
Check YouTube rules and content rights
Technical success does not establish that a particular loop is permitted or eligible for every YouTube feature. The API and encoder references describe stream setup and health, not the account-specific simultaneous-stream limit or how YouTube will treat a particular repetitive prerecorded loop. Check current Live Control Room limits and applicable YouTube Help policies for your account and content. Make sure you have the rights needed for all video and audio in each loop; a stream key does not grant content rights.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not administer a VPS, FFmpeg processes, and system services, StreamNeo is a managed option for prerecorded YouTube loops: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video, not camera streaming. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
