Short answer: The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is not officially supported on Macs with Apple-silicon ARM-based CPUs. Apple’s Rosetta translation environment can run software compiled for Intel x86_64 on Apple-silicon Macs, but the available official documentation does not establish that ESO has a native Apple-silicon build, nor does it provide a native-versus-Rosetta benchmark. You can try ESO using the workarounds listed by ESO Support, but launch success, frame rate and stability are not guaranteed.
What ESO officially supports on Apple silicon
ESO Support’s direct answer is unambiguous: “The Elder Scrolls Online is not officially supported on Mac computers with Apple silicon ARM-based CPUs.” That statement applies to Macs using Apple-designed M-series processors, regardless of whether the machine meets the older Mac hardware requirements listed elsewhere in ESO’s support pages.

“Not officially supported” is different from “will never launch.” It means ZeniMax’s support documentation does not promise compatibility, a specific performance level, crash-free operation or a fix for every Apple-silicon problem. ESO Support presents its Apple-silicon suggestions as potential workarounds and explicitly warns that they are not guaranteed. Treat any successful launch as an unsupported configuration rather than as confirmation that your Mac is an officially compatible platform.

What that policy means in practice
The policy affects more than the first launch. An unsupported configuration has no documented promise that a future ESO update, launcher change or macOS update will continue to work. A setup that opens today may still show a different result after software changes, and the support page does not commit to troubleshooting every failure on Apple silicon.
It also helps to separate three questions that are often collapsed into one. First, can the launcher start? Second, can the game enter a world and render correctly? Third, does it remain stable and responsive during a representative session? Passing the first test does not answer the other two. The official position leaves all three outcomes outside a support guarantee.
If you are deciding whether to purchase a Mac specifically for ESO, the safest reading is that Apple silicon is not a supported target. If you already own an M-series Mac, trying the documented workarounds is an experiment with an uncertain result, not a supported installation path.

What Rosetta does
Apple describes Rosetta as a translation environment that lets an Apple-silicon Mac run Mac applications compiled for the Intel x86_64 architecture. Translation happens between the application’s Intel instructions and the processor architecture used by Apple silicon. Apple also says macOS uses a native version whenever one is available.
Those statements explain the operating-system mechanism; they do not identify ESO’s current executable architecture. The official material reviewed for this question does not establish a native Apple-silicon ESO build. It also does not report frame rates, frame-time behavior, crashes or visual differences for ESO under Rosetta.
Why “native is faster” is not an established ESO result
A native application can avoid translation overhead in general, but that principle cannot be converted into an ESO performance claim without testing the same ESO build and workload on comparable machines. No authoritative ESO-specific test in the available documentation measures native Apple-silicon ESO against an Intel build translated by Rosetta. There is consequently no defensible FPS difference, percentage gain or stability guarantee to quote.
Do not treat an Apple statement about native applications as evidence that ESO itself is native. Conversely, do not assume that every translated game will exhibit the same overhead: graphics APIs, launcher behavior, anti-cheat components, drivers and the game’s own workload can all affect the result.

What “native” would mean here
In this context, “native” should describe an ESO executable built for Apple silicon, not merely an application that happens to launch on an M-series Mac. A universal application can contain both Intel and Apple-silicon code, while an Intel-only application relies on translation for its Intel portion. A launcher can also differ from the game executable. Finder’s label therefore provides useful evidence about the selected bundle, but it is not a complete audit of every process ESO starts.
Likewise, the existence of Rosetta does not mean ESO is officially supported, and official support would not by itself prove a particular frame rate. Architecture, support policy and measured performance are separate facts.
Published Mac requirements and their limits
ESO’s Mac requirements page lists the following figures. The page was available without a publication date and was crawled in October 2026; it warns that requirements may change.

| Requirement | Published detail | How to interpret it on Apple silicon |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Mac High Sierra v10.13 | A minimum listed version, not an Apple-silicon support promise. Apple-silicon Macs shipped with much newer macOS releases. |
| Mac model | Mid-2017-or-newer Mac models | A broad model-age criterion that includes Intel Macs; it does not override the separate ARM support warning. |
| Graphics memory | At least 4 GB of GPU memory | The published threshold does not establish how macOS reports unified memory on an Apple-silicon Mac or what ESO will allocate under translation. |
| Free storage | 105 GB free HDD space | Keep at least the stated free capacity available before installing or updating. The figure is a published requirement, not an independently verified current recommendation. |
| Internet | Broadband internet; a persistent internet connection is required | Network access is part of the game’s requirements, separate from CPU architecture. |
Storage, macOS and network checks can prevent ordinary installation failures, but passing them does not turn an unsupported Apple-silicon configuration into a supported one. ESO’s requirements page itself points readers toward the ARM-Mac support article because some Macs are incompatible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How to use the numbers before a trial
Check free space before downloading rather than after an installer has already failed. The published 105 GB figure is a capacity requirement, so leave that amount available on the drive where ESO and its updates will be installed. It is not a promise that every future patch will require exactly the same amount.
The High Sierra 10.13 entry is also a floor in the requirements table, not a recommendation to downgrade an Apple-silicon Mac. The ARM support article remains the controlling warning for Apple-silicon compatibility. Similarly, the mid-2017-or-newer wording should not be read as a chip-generation guarantee: it spans Intel models and does not cancel the separate ARM exclusion.
How to check which Mac and application you have
Confirm the processor architecture
- Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac (or System Settings followed by General and About, depending on your macOS version).
- Look for the chip or processor field. “Apple M-series” identifies Apple silicon; an Intel processor identifies an Intel Mac.
- Record the exact chip, installed memory, macOS version and available storage. Those details are essential if you report a problem to support or compare repeatable runs.
Identify an application’s Intel or universal status
Apple Support explains that Intel-based applications can be identified from Finder. In Finder, open the Applications folder, select the relevant application, choose File > Get Info, and inspect the Kind field. macOS may label an application as Application (Intel), Application (Universal) or Application (Apple silicon).
This check is useful for a visible application bundle, but it does not by itself prove that every ESO component uses the same architecture. A launcher, updater and game executable can be separate components. If the launcher is universal while a game binary is Intel-only, the game portion can still require translation.
Record the environment before changing settings
Write down the chip, memory, macOS release, display arrangement, current resolution and available storage before trying a workaround. Note whether the built-in panel or an external display is primary. Keeping one baseline makes it possible to tell whether a later change affected launch behavior or merely changed the way the desktop is presented.
ESO’s four documented Apple-silicon workarounds
ESO Support’s ARM-Mac article focuses on windowing and display configuration. It does not present these steps as performance optimizations, and it says none is guaranteed.
1. Use windowed mode
- Open ESO’s video or display settings.
- Change the display mode from full-screen to Windowed (or the equivalent windowed option exposed by your client).
- Apply the change and relaunch if ESO requests it.
This is intended to address a display or launch path that fails in full-screen mode. It is not evidence that windowed mode raises frame rate.
2. Select a scaled display setting with “More Space”
- Open macOS display settings.
- Choose the built-in display and select a scaled resolution option labelled More Space.
- Launch ESO again and test whether the display initializes correctly.
The setting changes the desktop’s scaling choice. It should not be described as a guaranteed fix or as a way to increase GPU performance.
3. Launch on an external display, then move the window
- Connect an external display and set it as the display on which ESO will initially open.
- Start ESO in windowed mode, sign in and enter the game world.
- Move the ESO window to the Mac’s primary display after you are in-game.
ESO lists this sequence for a display/launch problem. The external monitor is not documented as a performance upgrade, and moving the window does not establish a different rendering path.

4. Choose a fixed resolution with Display Menu
- ESO Support refers to the Display Menu App Store application as a way to select a fixed display resolution.
- Use that application, if it is available and compatible with your current macOS version, to select a fixed resolution before launching ESO.
- Try ESO in windowed mode after applying the resolution.
The support page’s reference is guidance, not an endorsement or confirmation that the application remains available or current. Check the App Store listing yourself before relying on it, and remember that ESO does not guarantee this workaround.
Which order should you try?
Start with windowed mode because it changes the fewest system-level variables. If that does not help, try the “More Space” scaled setting, then the external-display sequence if you have another monitor. Use Display Menu only if you need the fixed-resolution option and it is available for your macOS version. Test one change at a time; combining all four makes it difficult to identify which setting affected the result.
A practical troubleshooting path
Before launching
- Confirm whether the Mac is Apple silicon or Intel and record the exact model.
- Check the macOS version against the published baseline of High Sierra 10.13, while remembering that this baseline does not establish Apple-silicon support.
- Verify at least 105 GB of free storage, broadband access and a persistent internet connection.
- Note which display is primary, its current scaling choice and whether an external display is connected.
- Use Finder’s Get Info panel to record whether the visible ESO application is labelled Intel, Universal or Apple silicon.
If ESO will not launch
- Confirm that the Mac is Apple silicon or Intel and note the macOS version.
- Verify at least 105 GB of free storage, broadband access and a persistent internet connection.
- Try windowed mode and a fixed or scaled display setting before changing multiple variables at once.
- If an external display is available, follow ESO’s launch-on-external-then-move procedure.
- Record the exact point of failure: launcher does not open, sign-in fails, the game closes before the character screen, or the game closes after entering a world.
If the game opens but the display is wrong
- Switch to windowed mode.
- Use the macOS “More Space” scaled setting or a fixed resolution selected through the documented Display Menu approach.
- Move the already-running window between displays only after entering the game, as ESO describes.
- Undo one change at a time if the symptom worsens so you know which setting affected it.
If performance is inconsistent
Do not infer a native-versus-Rosetta cause from a single stutter, crash or low frame rate. Keep the display mode, resolution, graphics preset, macOS version and ESO build constant, then repeat the same workload. Note whether the symptom is a low average frame rate, uneven frame times, a crash, a freeze, input delay or a visual artifact. These are separate failure modes and need separate evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen to stop troubleshooting
If the documented display changes do not alter the failure, record that outcome rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. The support page says the workarounds are not guaranteed, so continued failure is consistent with the published support position. A concise log of the attempted mode, resolution, display and failure point is more useful than an unsupported claim that Rosetta is responsible.
What a valid native-versus-Rosetta comparison would require
No ESO-specific comparison is supplied by the official sources. If you conduct or read a future test, the result is meaningful only when the variables are reported clearly.
| Control | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Software | The same ESO build, launcher version and macOS release | A patch or operating-system change can alter compatibility independently of translation. |
| Hardware | Exact Mac model and chip, memory configuration and display | “Apple silicon Mac” covers materially different machines. |
| Graphics settings | Resolution, scaling, preset, refresh rate, window mode and any frame cap | Different settings can outweigh architecture effects. |
| Workload | Same location, character activity, camera movement and test duration | Busy cities, combat and quiet interiors place different loads on the game. |
| Measurements | Frame-rate method, average and low results, frame-time consistency, crashes and artifacts | An average FPS number alone can hide hitching or instability. |
Launch success, frame rate, frame-time consistency, crashes and visual artifacts should be reported as separate outcomes. A test that launches successfully has not demonstrated good performance; a high average frame rate has not demonstrated stability.
A useful test record
For each run, record the date, ESO build, macOS version, exact Mac chip, memory, display, resolution, window mode and graphics preset. Describe the workload precisely—for example, the same location, movement pattern and duration each time. Save separate observations for whether the launcher opened, whether sign-in completed, whether the character entered a world, average and low frame-rate readings, frame-time consistency, crashes and visible artifacts. This format prevents a single successful launch or isolated hitch from being presented as a platform-wide result.
If two runs differ, first check for changed resolution, scaling, refresh rate, display, game build or macOS version. Without those controls, a result cannot identify translation overhead as the cause.
Native versus Rosetta: what is and is not established
| Question | Supported answer |
|---|---|
| Is ESO officially supported on Apple-silicon Macs? | No. ESO Support explicitly excludes Macs with Apple-silicon ARM-based CPUs from official support. |
| Can Rosetta translate Intel Mac code? | Yes. Apple documents Rosetta as the translation environment for x86_64 code on Apple silicon. |
| Is there an official ESO native Apple-silicon build? | Not established by the cited ESO and Apple documentation. |
| Is native ESO faster than Rosetta ESO? | No authoritative ESO-specific benchmark in the available material answers this. |
| Does an external display improve FPS? | Not established. ESO lists an external display only as a possible launch/display workaround. |
| Are the four workarounds guaranteed? | No. ESO Support explicitly says they are not guaranteed. |
| Does meeting the listed Mac model age make an M-series Mac supported? | No. The mid-2017-or-newer requirement is a general Mac baseline and does not override the ARM-specific exclusion. |
| Does Finder’s “Universal” label prove the whole game is native? | No. Separate launcher, updater and game components can have different architectures. |
Should you try ESO on an Apple-silicon Mac?
Trying is reasonable if you already own the Mac, have sufficient free storage and accept unsupported operation. Start with the least disruptive changes—windowed mode and display scaling—then document exactly what happens. Keep expectations conservative: a successful sign-in is useful information, not a support commitment or a performance certification.
If you need a configuration with a published support position, an Intel Mac that meets ESO’s listed Mac requirements is the category addressed by those requirements. Even there, requirements can change, so verify the current support page before making a purchase or reinstall decision. An Apple-silicon Mac that meets the same storage, operating-system and network figures remains subject to the separate ARM support exclusion.

Purchase and accessory considerations
The cited support guidance does not recommend buying an external display, cooling accessory, physical game copy or gaming input device to solve the native-versus-Rosetta question. An external display appears only as a possible launch workaround, and ESO says its workarounds are not guaranteed. Do not treat an accessory purchase as a supported performance upgrade.

Questions readers commonly ask
Does installing Rosetta make ESO officially supported?
No. Rosetta supplies translation for Intel code; it does not change ESO Support’s stated platform policy.
Can I quote a specific FPS loss under Rosetta?
Not from the available official material. It contains no ESO-specific native-versus-Rosetta benchmark, so any numerical loss would require a reproducible test with disclosed controls.
Is the Display Menu app required?
No requirement is stated. ESO lists it as one possible way to select a fixed resolution, and its current availability or compatibility is not established by the support article.
Does meeting the 105 GB requirement guarantee installation?
No. The 105 GB figure is a published storage requirement. Apple-silicon support is addressed separately and is not guaranteed by free disk space.
Does “native whenever possible” mean ESO is native?
No. Apple’s statement is general operating-system guidance. It does not identify the architecture of ESO’s current launcher or game executable.
Could windowed mode improve my frame rate?
That is not established by ESO’s support article. Windowed mode is listed as a display or launch workaround, not as a performance optimization.
Will an external monitor make an M-series Mac faster?
No performance benefit is documented. ESO describes an external display only as part of a launch sequence: start in windowed mode, sign in, enter the game and then move the window.
What if the launcher is Intel but Finder reports a universal app?
Check the specific component you can inspect, but do not assume the label covers every process. The launcher, updater and game executable may be separate, and the game portion could still require translation.

Should I buy a Mac specifically for ESO?
The official position does not support recommending Apple silicon as a guaranteed ESO platform. If ESO compatibility is the deciding factor, treat an Intel Mac meeting the published Mac requirements as the category those requirements address, and verify the current support page before buying.
Bottom line for Apple-silicon owners
Rosetta explains how an Intel Mac application can run on Apple silicon, but it does not establish that ESO is native, fast or stable on that platform. ESO Support’s official position remains that Apple-silicon Macs are not officially supported. Use the documented display and windowing workarounds only as experiments, keep the published Mac requirements in context, and treat any native-versus-Rosetta performance conclusion as unproven until a current, controlled ESO test supplies the missing evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run ESO on an ARM-based Mac?
ESO Support says Macs with Apple-silicon ARM-based CPUs are not officially supported. The listed display and windowing workarounds may help, but ESO does not guarantee that they will work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

No. Rosetta translates Intel x86_64 code; the official documentation does not establish that ESO has a native Apple-silicon build.
What Mac requirements still apply?
ESO lists macOS High Sierra 10.13, mid-2017-or-newer Mac models, at least 4 GB of GPU memory, 105 GB of free disk space and broadband internet with a persistent connection. Those figures do not override the separate Apple-silicon support exclusion.
Are ESO’s Apple-silicon workarounds guaranteed?
No. ESO identifies windowed mode, the “More Space” scaled setting, launching on an external display before moving the window and selecting a fixed resolution with Display Menu as potential workarounds, and explicitly says they are not guaranteed.
Is native ESO faster than ESO through Rosetta?
There is no authoritative ESO-specific benchmark in the cited documentation that establishes an FPS, frame-time or stability difference.
Does an external monitor improve ESO performance?
That is not documented. ESO mentions an external display only as a possible launch and display workaround.
How can I tell whether an ESO app is Intel or native?
In Finder, select the application, choose File > Get Info and inspect Kind. macOS may show Application (Intel), Application (Universal) or Application (Apple silicon), but separate ESO components can have different architectures.
What information should I record when troubleshooting?
Record the exact Mac chip and model, memory, macOS version, ESO build, free storage, display arrangement, resolution, window mode, graphics settings, the workaround attempted and the precise point at which launch or gameplay fails.
The Bottom Line
Rosetta can translate Intel Mac code on Apple silicon, but ESO Support does not officially support Apple-silicon Macs and the cited documentation provides no native-versus-Rosetta benchmark. Treat the four display workarounds as experiments, not performance fixes or guarantees.
