The First Descendant Cosmetics Explained: Normal vs. Ultimate

Normal and Ultimate are Descendant variants; skins and other cosmetics are separate items. Check each item’s in-game preview and description because compatibility is not universal in the official notes.

In The First Descendant, Normal and Ultimate are character variants; a skin or cosmetic is a separate appearance item. The game’s shop lists Normal Descendants and Ultimate Descendants separately from Descendant Skins and Ultimate Descendant Skins. That distinction matters: “Ultimate” does not mean “skin,” and the official notes do not establish that every cosmetic works on both versions. Check the specific item’s in-game description and preview before buying or equipping it.

Normal and Ultimate are variants, not cosmetic tiers

The official shop taxonomy separates character products from appearance products. “Normal Descendants” and “Ultimate Descendants” are listed under Descendant, while “Descendant Skins” and “Ultimate Descendant Skins” are listed under Premium Skins. In other words, Normal and Ultimate identify versions of a character; a skin is an appearance item.

This article is about cosmetics and compatibility, not a comparison of current character stats, abilities, or unlock methods. The cited official customization notes do not provide a complete skin-by-skin compatibility chart for Normal and Ultimate versions.

What counts as a cosmetic?

Outfits are only one part of the appearance system. Nexon’s June 19, 2025 Update 1.2.20 notes list shop categories including Descendant Skins, Head Skin, Makeup, and Cosmetic Items. The latter include back and chest attachments, emotes, spawns, Ecives, grappling hooks, UI themes, and name cards. Weapon Skins are a separate category.

The categories help identify what kind of product you are viewing, but they do not by themselves tell you which Descendant variants can use a particular item.

How to check whether a specific cosmetic works

  1. Open the cosmetic’s item page or preview in the in-game shop or Customization UI.
  2. Read the item description and check which Descendant or versions it identifies as eligible.
  3. Use the preview to confirm how it appears on the character you intend to customize, then verify the displayed details before purchasing or equipping it.

Do not assume that all cosmetics transfer between Normal and Ultimate versions—or that none do. The official notes reviewed do not establish either universal rule. Compatibility is an item-level question, so rely on that cosmetic’s current in-game description and preview.

Unique cosmetic visibility is a separate setting

Update 1.2.20 added a “Show Unique Cosmetics” control for specific named features: Serena’s wings and the metallic jaws of Sharen, Ultimate Sharen, and Jayber. Nexon says the setting can be saved for each Customization Loadout slot. The notes also specify that Serena’s wings can remain visible during certain skills regardless of the setting.

This is a visibility control for the named features, not a general switch for every skin or cosmetic. It does not establish compatibility between Normal and Ultimate versions.

One Lounge display rule for owners of both versions

Nexon’s September 4, 2025 Update 1.3.3 notes say that players can place Descendants they own in the Lounge. If they own both the Normal and Ultimate versions of the same Descendant, only the Ultimate version can be placed there. Players can choose a customization loadout for a Descendant displayed in the Lounge.

This is a Lounge display rule. It should not be read as a restriction on using the Normal version in missions or as a rule about cosmetic compatibility.

Cosmetic stock and sale periods can change

Shop categories and availability are not the same thing: a category tells you what kind of item it is, while the live shop determines what is currently offered. Nexon’s Update 1.4.0 listing includes examples of cosmetic releases and an August 27, 2026 availability start date, and notes that some bundle sale periods were extended. That listing is not a complete live catalog and does not establish current prices or guarantee that an item remains purchasable. Check the in-game shop for current stock and dates.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
