Yes, if you want a free cooperative looter shooter built around repeatable missions, flexible character abilities and four-player giant-boss fights—but expect a substantial grind and a live-service game with uneven long-term momentum. The First Descendant is still actively maintained in 2026, yet its own publisher has acknowledged a lack of staying power. That makes it easiest to recommend as a low-cost co-op game to sample, not as a guaranteed forever hobby.
What is The First Descendant?
The First Descendant is a free-to-play, third-person looter shooter and cooperative action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5. You select a Descendant with a distinct ability kit, combine those abilities with firearms and modules, complete story and open-world missions, improve equipment, and challenge enormous Colossi with up to four players.

The setting follows humanity’s fight against the alien Vulgus. Albion is the human refuge, while Ingris is the wider battlefield tied to the Colossi and the Iron Heart. The narrative provides context for the missions, but the game’s lasting structure is its combat-and-progression loop rather than a one-time campaign.
How the gameplay loop works
Gunplay and Descendant abilities
Firearms provide the familiar looter-shooter foundation, while each Descendant changes how you approach encounters. Abilities can provide damage, crowd control, defense or team utility, so changing characters is more meaningful than simply changing a weapon skin.

Grappling-hook movement
The grappling hook is one of the game’s defining movement tools. It speeds traversal, helps you reposition during firefights and adds vertical options to encounters. It gives missions a more mobile feel than a conventional cover shooter, although the broader activity structure still relies heavily on repeating objectives.
Farming and upgrading
Missions award weapons, modules and other progression materials. You repeatedly run content to obtain stronger or more suitable equipment and to develop additional Descendants. That loop will appeal to players who enjoy optimizing builds; players who want steady, one-and-done story progression may find it exhausting.
Colossi and four-player co-op
The Colossi are the strongest reason to play with a group. These encounters ask a team to learn boss patterns, manage positioning and coordinate damage rather than simply shoot a large health bar. PlayStation’s listing specifically highlights four-player Colossi fights, while Xbox’s current listing supports cross-platform multiplayer.
High-difficulty co-op also has an unusual consideration: enemy statistics can dynamically scale when players leave a multiplayer session. Nexon’s July 23, 2026 Patch 1.3.35 addressed problems with this Onslaught behavior and aimed to make the system clearer and improve the experience. In practice, a departing teammate can change the difficulty of the encounter, so matchmaking stability matters more than in a purely casual mission.

Platforms and crossplay in 2026
The active platforms documented in Nexon’s July 23, 2026 Patch 1.3.35 are Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox. Xbox also lists Xbox Cloud Gaming and cross-platform multiplayer support.
| Platform | 2026 status |
|---|---|
| PC (Steam) | Supported |
| PlayStation 5 | Supported |
| Xbox Series X|S | Supported |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Listed by Xbox; catalog and subscription availability can vary by region |
| Xbox One | Unsupported from June 19, 2025 |
| PlayStation 4 | Listed for the original June 30, 2024 launch, but not listed among the active platforms in the July 2026 patch record |
Crossplay means players on the supported PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox ecosystems can play together, subject to the platform and service conditions in their region. The Xbox listing is the clearest current confirmation of cross-platform multiplayer.
Is The First Descendant really free?
Yes. Steam marks the game as Free To Play, so there is no purchase required to start playing. The free entry point does not mean every progression option is free: Steam, PlayStation and Xbox all disclose in-game purchases or virtual currency.
| Store evidence | What it means |
|---|---|
| Steam | Free-to-play access with in-app purchases |
| PlayStation | Optional in-game purchases, random items disclosed, virtual-currency packs from $4.99 to $99.99 |
| Xbox | Caliber bundles from $4.99 for 250 Caliber to $99.99 for 5,000 Caliber plus bonus currency |
Those prices are listed store denominations, not a claim that you must spend them to finish the game. They do show that the business model includes optional paid currency and convenience or cosmetic purchases.

Is it pay to win?
The available storefront disclosures establish optional purchases, virtual currency and random items; they do not establish a definitive pay-to-win verdict. A fair description is that The First Descendant monetizes convenience and cosmetics inside a free-to-start progression game. Whether that feels acceptable depends on how much farming you are willing to do and how strongly you want to accelerate it.
Do not confuse “free” with “frictionless.” You can enter without paying, but the game’s long-term progression asks you to repeat content, and paid options exist alongside that loop. Players who dislike boosts, randomized purchases or monetized shortcuts should examine the store carefully before spending.
How bad is the grind?
Grinding is the central trade-off. Equipment farming, character growth and repeated missions are not side activities; they are how the game expects you to build a stronger roster and prepare for harder content.
- Good fit: you enjoy repeating missions to chase better equipment, testing builds and gradually developing several characters.
- Poor fit: you want every mission to deliver a major new story beat or dislike running the same activity for a targeted drop.
- Group impact: coordinated teams can make demanding Colossi encounters more satisfying, but matchmaking and player departures can affect high-difficulty scaling.
The grind is therefore less a single flaw than the game’s defining structure. If the farming loop is enjoyable, it supplies months of goals; if it is not, additional content will feel like more obligation.

Reception and the game’s long-term health
Critical and player signals are mixed. GameSpot’s review index records a 3/10 score, while Metacritic lists a 57. Steam showed 63% positive English reviews from 51,222 reviews and 66% positive recent reviews from 608 reviews when accessed on October 1, 2026. Steam review percentages can change as new reviews arrive.
There is also a clear warning about retention. GamesRadar reported that Nexon CEO Junghun Lee described The First Descendant as having a “strong launch, no staying power” and said the issue required structural changes to game mechanics rather than a simple patch. GamesRadar also reported a launch peak of 264,860 concurrent players and a recent 24-hour peak of 4,981; both figures are time-bound snapshots, not a permanent player-count measure.
The service is not abandoned. Nexon’s July 2026 patch addressed high-difficulty co-op problems, demonstrating ongoing maintenance. However, active patches and weak retention can coexist: updates may keep systems functional without restoring the launch audience.
Who should play The First Descendant?
Play it if you want
- A free entry point on PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox.
- Third-person shooting combined with character abilities and grappling-hook movement.
- Four-player boss encounters that reward coordination.
- A long progression chase built around farming equipment and developing Descendants.
- Cross-platform multiplayer, with Xbox Cloud Gaming listed where the service is available.
Skip it or keep expectations low if you want
- A tightly paced campaign with little repetition.
- A progression system without monetized convenience or random-item disclosures.
- Evidence of a reliably large long-term player base.
- To play on Xbox One after its June 19, 2025 support cutoff.
Final verdict
The First Descendant is worth trying in 2026 because the download is free, the movement and Descendant kits give its shooting a distinct identity, and Colossi fights can be genuinely engaging with a coordinated team. It is not an unqualified recommendation: the grind is foundational, optional monetization is prominent, reception remains uneven, and Nexon has acknowledged retention problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTreat it as a free co-op experiment. If the first cycle of missions, farming and boss mechanics feels rewarding, the game offers a substantial long-term loop. If repetition already feels like work, spending money will not fix the underlying structure.
