The First Descendant Review: Is It Worth Playing in 2026?

The First Descendant is free-to-play and still receiving updates, but its repeat-play loop and uncertain staying power make it a better fit for some players than others.

The First Descendant is worth trying if you want a free-to-play co-op shooter and enjoy repeating missions to build up characters and weapons—but its long-term appeal is less certain. Nexon’s CEO described the game in March 2026 as having “Strong launch, no staying power,” and said lasting improvement would require structural changes to its mechanics. That is a notable warning, not a substitute for judging the moment-to-moment loop yourself. The game remained active in October 2026, with Patch 1.4.4 bringing content improvements, bug fixes and shop products.

Is The First Descendant worth playing in 2026?

It can be, especially if the appeal of a looter shooter is the cycle of shooting through missions, collecting gear and working toward a stronger build. The key question is whether you enjoy repeating content in pursuit of a specific character or weapon. The evidence available here does not establish how many runs or hours a particular goal takes, so there is no reliable basis for promising a quick unlock—or calling every grind excessive.

There are reasons to approach it with measured expectations. In Nexon’s March 2026 capital markets briefing, President and CEO Junghun Lee said, “Same issue with The First Descendant: Strong launch, no staying power.” He added that “These are design issues that are not fixed with a patch – they require structural changes to game mechanics.” That is Nexon’s own assessment of retention; it does not tell you whether the shooting or build-crafting will click for you.

The game was still receiving updates later that year. Nexon’s October 1, 2026 notice for Patch 1.4.4 listed Steam, Xbox and PS5, and described new shop products, content improvements and bug fixes. The official news feed displayed October 7 issue notices when accessed October 8, 2026. That establishes continued support at that point, not a guarantee about future updates or a fix for the design concerns Lee identified. Nexon’s official news feed

How grindy is The First Descendant?

It is a game built around pursuing unlocks and gear through repeat play, but there is not enough verified information here to put a trustworthy number on the time required for a particular reward. No current drop-rate table, timed farming comparison or measured free-to-play progression path is established. Treat claims that a character takes a precise number of hours—or that a purchase reliably skips a specific amount of play—with caution unless they identify the current version, region and method.

When deciding whether the grind suits you, separate four questions:

METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER TACTICAL ED – PS5
  • The story, characters, voice acting, gameplay, and music that made the original a sensation return, remade for modern consoles
  • This evolutionary leap breathes new life into every cutscene, and rebuilds every corner of the world
  • Incredible new graphics bring the wild growth of the jungles, forests, and swamps to life in exquisite detail
  • Characters are rendered in fine detail so that facial wrinkles, pores, & separate eye & iris movements are visible, allowing for rich animations
  • Any injuries to his actual body will leave their mark permanently, telling a story of each player's unique journey
  • What are you chasing? A character or weapon goal gives repeated missions a purpose; without a target, the loop may feel less rewarding.
  • How repetitive is the route? Your tolerance for replaying content matters as much as the reward itself.
  • Does playing with others improve it? Co-op can make missions more social, but it does not remove repetition and can bring its own frustrations.
  • What can the shop change? Steam lists in-app purchases, and Nexon’s October 1, 2026 patch notice mentioned new shop products. Those sources do not establish current prices, the value of an item, or whether purchases are needed to progress.

Can you play solo or with friends?

The game is an online co-op shooter. Steam lists online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, while Nexon’s support page describes cross-play across PC and consoles. This makes it a plausible pick for friends on different supported platforms, but check the current platform and account requirements before arranging a group. A co-op friction point

Co-op is not friction-free when players leave partway through a mission. In its July 23, 2026 Patch 1.3.35 notes, Nexon said that in Onslaught and Clash, newly spawned monsters have their stats dynamically scaled when the active player count drops. The studio also acknowledged that adjusting stats does not fully resolve the core problem of mid-game departures, which can disrupt the mission and burden those left behind. This note concerns those modes; it does not establish how often departures happen or how every other activity handles them. Nexon’s Patch 1.3.35 notes

Is The First Descendant pay to win?

The available evidence confirms that the game has in-app purchases and a shop, but does not establish whether specific paid items provide direct power, how much progression they bypass, or whether they are necessary to reach particular goals. So a categorical pay-to-win verdict would go beyond what is verified. Check the live shop in your region and the details of a specific item before deciding whether its cost is worthwhile; the October 1, 2026 patch notice confirms shop additions, not their prices or value.

What platforms is The First Descendant on?

Nexon lists PC through its own launcher or Steam, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 as supported platforms. Its support page also lists Xbox One and PS4, but says support for both ended on June 19, 2025. For a current recommendation, focus on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5. Who should try it—and who should skip it?

Try it if

  • You want a free-to-play online shooter with cross-platform co-op.
  • You enjoy repeating missions to pursue characters, weapons and build goals.
  • You are comfortable deciding for yourself whether the combat and collection loop stays engaging over time.

Skip it if

  • You need a verified, short time-to-unlock for a particular character or weapon before committing.
  • You dislike repeated missions or interruptions in co-op activities.
  • You want a clear, evidence-backed answer about current shop prices, purchase value or paid progression before you start.

Verdict: The First Descendant is an easy game to sample because it is free-to-play, but whether it earns a long-term place in your rotation depends on your appetite for repetition. Nexon’s own comments make staying power a fair concern; the October 2026 update shows the game was still receiving support, but does not resolve that concern by itself.
