The short answer: no authoritative source publishes a RAM or CPU requirement for The Forest dedicated server. Steam’s frequently quoted figures—4 GB of RAM, an Intel Dual-Core 2.4 GHz processor minimum, and a quad-core processor recommended—describe the game client, not the server process. The dedicated-server tool is documented for Windows, uses TheForestDedicatedServer.exe, defaults to eight players, and requires TCP/UDP ports 8766, 27015 and 27016. You can self-host, but hardware sizing has to be validated on your own workload rather than inferred from the client requirements.
What is actually known about The Forest server requirements?
There are two different software roles: the game client running on each player’s computer and the dedicated server coordinating the world, connections and saves. Confusing those roles is why many hardware recommendations for The Forest are misleading.

| Item | Published figure | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 4 GB RAM minimum and 4 GB RAM recommended | Steam’s 2018 client listing; it is not a server specification. |
| Processor | Intel Dual-Core 2.4 GHz minimum | Steam’s minimum client processor. |
| Recommended processor | Quad-core processor | Steam’s recommended client processor. |
| Storage | 5 GB available space | Steam’s client requirement, not a complete server-storage plan. |
| Dedicated-server platform | Windows tool with TheForestDedicatedServer.exe |
Recorded by the third-party SteamDB listing. |
| Default player limit | Eight players | Configuration documented in a Steam Community guide, not a performance benchmark. |
No authoritative publication gives a supported minimum or recommended amount of server RAM, CPU model, storage growth, or bandwidth. Therefore, buying a specific memory kit, processor or “server PC” on the basis of the 4 GB client figure would be guesswork. Treat the published client numbers as a floor for running the game itself, not as a sizing rule for a dedicated host.

Yes. A Steam Community guide describes a dedicated-server tool and installation through Steam’s Tools section or SteamCMD. The guide’s page identifies its instructions as “Game version: v1.07” and shows an update date of January 23, 2019. It is useful for understanding the installation and configuration flow, but it is community documentation from 2019 rather than current official documentation from Endnight. SteamDB separately records the Windows application and executable name, but does not publish resource requirements.

The guide supports two configuration methods:
- Command-line parameters: values supplied when launching the server.
Server.cfg: a configuration file generated on the first server launch.
When the same setting is supplied both ways, the guide says the command-line parameter overrides the corresponding value in Server.cfg. Keep that precedence in mind when a change in the file appears to have no effect.
How to install The Forest Dedicated Server
Install through Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client and sign in to the account that will manage the server.
- Open Library, use the library filter to show Tools, and locate The Forest Dedicated Server.
- Install the tool to a Windows machine that can remain available whenever you want the world online.
- Launch the installed server application. The guide says the initial launch creates
Server.cfg; stop the process cleanly before editing the generated file. - Set the server name, player limit and other available options using either the documented command-line parameters or
Server.cfg. If both contain a value, use the command line as the effective setting.
Install with SteamCMD
The same guide identifies SteamCMD as an alternative installation route, which is useful for a headless Windows machine without the full Steam interface. No verified app ID or current command sequence is published in the cited material, so do not copy an unverified command from an old post. Install SteamCMD from Valve’s current distribution, obtain the dedicated-server app through its documented workflow, and then apply the guide’s configuration method to the installed files.
Check the executable and operating system
SteamDB lists TheForestDedicatedServer.exe and identifies the tool as Windows software. If you are planning a Linux host, a container or another operating system, the cited documentation does not establish native support. Do not assume that a compatibility layer will behave like a supported Windows installation; verify it separately before committing to that architecture.

Which ports does the server use?
The community guide assigns three ports and says to allow both TCP and UDP access. You normally need to permit them in the Windows firewall and forward them from your router to the computer running the server.

| Port | Protocol | Documented role | Default value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8766 | TCP and UDP | Steam communication | 8766 |
| 27015 | TCP and UDP | Game communication | 27015 |
| 27016 | TCP and UDP | Server queries | 27016 |
Router and firewall sequence
- Give the host computer a predictable local address, such as a DHCP reservation, so forwarding does not break when its address changes.
- Create firewall rules for TCP and UDP on ports 8766, 27015 and 27016, or use the application rule created by Windows when the executable first requests access.
- Forward the same ports on the router to the host computer’s local address.
- Start the server and have a player outside your home network test discovery or direct connection.
- If forwarding appears correct but the server is unreachable, compare the router’s internet-facing address with the address shown by your ISP. Carrier-grade NAT can prevent inbound forwarding; in that case, ask the ISP whether a public address or suitable alternative is available.
Opening ports that are not used by the server does not improve performance. Keep the rules limited to the documented ports and remove them if you retire the host.
How many players can a Forest server handle?
The guide sets a default maximum of eight players. That is a configuration value, not a tested capacity guarantee. It does not tell you how much CPU time, memory or network headroom remains with eight players, large saves, or heavy activity. You can use eight as the documented starting limit, then observe the server under the number of simultaneous players you actually expect.
Do not advertise a higher limit merely because a configuration field accepts a larger number. No source in the published material supplies a validated player-to-hardware ratio.

Start with the smallest practical test host
Use a Windows machine that meets the client’s 4 GB memory and processor figures only as an initial software-compatibility reference, never as proof that the server will be adequate. Leave memory and CPU capacity for the operating system, Steam or SteamCMD, monitoring and any other services. The cited sources do not establish how much headroom is enough, so record actual behavior rather than assigning an invented percentage.
Test at your real player count
Invite the number of players you expect, move through demanding areas and keep the session running long enough to expose problems. Watch total system memory, CPU utilization, disk activity and network stability. Record whether players experience disconnects, delayed world updates or save failures. Increase resources or reduce the player limit only in response to an observed bottleneck.
Separate server lag from client performance
A player with an underpowered graphics card can have low frame rates while the server is healthy. Conversely, a server can suffer simulation or networking delays while every client reports a high frame rate. Ask several players about the same event and compare it with host-side CPU, memory and network observations before replacing hardware.
Plan storage and backups independently
The 5 GB Steam figure is a client storage requirement. A server also needs room for its installation, logs, configuration and saved worlds. The cited sources do not state save-growth rates or a backup schedule, so reserve more space than the installation alone and establish a backup routine before inviting players to invest time in a world.

Self-hosting versus a paid game-server host
A rented host can be convenient, but “game-server hosting” is a service category, not a guarantee that a provider supports The Forest. Compare the following items on the provider’s current product page or contract before paying.
| Decision factor | Self-hosting | Paid host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | You install the tool, edit configuration, manage Windows and open router/firewall ports. | The provider may supply an installation panel, but the exact workflow varies. |
| Availability | The server is online only while your machine, power and internet connection are available. | Usually intended for continuous availability; confirm the host’s maintenance and outage terms. |
| Network work | You handle port forwarding, firewall rules and any ISP restrictions. | The provider handles its network; you still need to verify join and discovery behavior. |
| Control | Direct access to files, command-line options and Server.cfg. |
Control depends on the panel, file access and permitted launch parameters. |
| Location and latency | Bound to your home connection and geographic location. | You can often choose a region, but confirm the actual facility and route for your players. |
| Backups | You design and test your own backup and restore process. | Ask whether backups exist, how often they run, how long they are retained and whether restores cost extra. |
| Price | No hosting bill, but you carry electricity, hardware and administration costs. | Recurring price varies by provider, location, player limit and included resources; no universal current price is established here. |
Self-host when you already have a suitable Windows machine, control of the router and someone willing to maintain it. A paid host is sensible when the server must stay online while your gaming PC is off or when you cannot accept inbound connections, provided the contract explicitly supports The Forest and exposes the settings you need.
If you would rather not run Windows and forward ports yourself, Godlike.Host is a game-server host with its own game panel, a config editor, up to three free backups a day with restore, free DDoS protection and 10 data-center locations. Check its The Forest page for the current plans before you pay.

The guide documents a Steam server account token as an optional way to help players locate a server. Treat it as a discovery aid, not as a substitute for correct port forwarding or firewall rules. Keep credentials private, and follow Steam’s current account-token instructions because the 2019 guide may not reflect later platform changes.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Troubleshooting checklist
The server does not appear to friends
- Confirm the process is running and the intended world and name are loaded.
- Check Windows firewall rules for both protocols on all three documented ports.
- Verify router forwarding points to the host’s current local address.
- Check whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections.
- If you changed
Server.cfgbut see no result, remove the conflicting command-line parameter; command-line values take precedence.
Players can connect but experience delays
- Observe the host’s CPU, memory, disk and network while several players reproduce the problem.
- Test with fewer simultaneous players to determine whether the issue scales with population.
- Ask whether all players see the delay. A single player’s frame-rate problem is not proof of server overload.
Configuration changes seem ignored
- Stop the server before editing the generated file.
- Check spelling and syntax against the guide’s documented options.
- Search the launch shortcut, script or service definition for a command-line value overriding the file.
- Restart and verify the effective setting in the server output or in-game behavior.
A save or installation is lost
Do not rely on the 5 GB client number as a backup plan. Copy the server’s saves and configuration to separate storage on a schedule you can restore and test. The published material does not define an official backup mechanism or retention policy.
What the available evidence cannot tell you
- There is no authoritative RAM minimum or recommended RAM figure for the dedicated server.
- There is no authoritative CPU model, core count or clock-speed recommendation for the dedicated server.
- There is no published benchmark translating player count into hardware capacity.
- There is no verified provider comparison, current hosting price or provider-specific feature list.
- The installation guide’s v1.07 label and 2019 update date mean its commands and labels should be checked against the current tool before deployment.
Those limits are important: a precise-looking “4 GB server” or “dual-core server” recommendation would present client data as if it were a server test, which it is not.
A practical launch plan
- Choose Windows hardware or a hosting plan that you can keep online and maintain.
- Install The Forest Dedicated Server from Steam Library > Tools, or use SteamCMD.
- Launch once to generate
Server.cfg, then configure the documented options. - Allow and forward TCP/UDP ports 8766, 27015 and 27016.
- Keep the documented default maximum of eight players until your own testing shows a stable lower or higher operating point.
- Test with real players while monitoring the host, and adjust resources or population based on observed behavior.
- Back up saves and configuration before regular play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do The Forest’s 4 GB RAM and dual-core requirements tell me what server to buy?
No. Steam lists those numbers for the game client. The available dedicated-server documentation does not publish a RAM or CPU baseline, so they cannot justify a server purchase.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is The Forest dedicated server officially supported on Linux?
The cited SteamDB record identifies a Windows tool and the executable TheForestDedicatedServer.exe. The available documentation does not establish native Linux support.
What ports should I forward for a home server?
The community guide documents TCP and UDP ports 8766, 27015 and 27016, used respectively for Steam communication, game communication and queries.
Why does a Server.cfg change not take effect?
A command-line parameter overrides the corresponding configuration-file value. Stop the server, check its launch parameters, edit the generated file, and restart it.
