To complete The Ghost in the Portrait in Disney Dreamlight Valley (DDV), sabotage Oogie Boogie’s Lucky Wheel, gather five Zero Essence in the Mirror Lair, and use the resulting Real Ghostly Paint Thinner to free Zero from the correct portrait. The quest became available October 7, 2026, as Week 3 of the Season of Scares event.
Before you start: availability and prerequisites
The Ghost in the Portrait is the third weekly Oogie Boogie quest in Season of Scares. The event runs September 23 through November 4, 2026, according to Gameloft’s event announcement. To begin the event chain, unlock the Peaceful Meadow, Scrooge McDuck’s Store, and Chez Remy, then check your Valley mail and visit Scrooge’s Store. You must also complete the preceding quest, The Oogie Boogie Contract, before this one becomes available.
Gameloft says players who begin the first Oogie Boogie quest before November 4 can complete the remaining quests later at their own pace. The announcement puts it this way: “As long as you begin the first Oogie Boogie quest before November 4th, you’ll be able to continue and complete the remaining quests at your own pace.”
How to complete The Ghost in the Portrait
- Enter the Mirror Lair. Go through the Strange Mirror in Scrooge’s Store and meet Oogie Boogie.
- Inspect the clues. Examine the Haunted Portrait by the Lucky Wheel and the Memory in the Mirror Lair. Check that Oogie’s latest Lucky Wheel Ticket is in your inventory, then speak with Oogie and Scrooge McDuck.
- Set the gift box. Place the Plain Gift Box on the table at the base of the staircase on the right side of the Mirror Lair’s first floor.
- Sabotage the Lucky Wheel. Use your Pickaxe on the wheel, then collect the five Lucky Wheel Cogs that appear.
- Try the first paint-thinner sequence. Pick up Ghostly Paint Thinner, add it to your Watering Can, and water Zero’s Haunted Portrait. The clue leads to another trick; return to Oogie when prompted.
- Follow the portrait clue. Water the real Zero portrait in the Mirror Lair. When the quest says Zero is still trapped, speak with Merlin.
- Find the Zero motifs and essence. Interact with all the Zero drawings in the Mirror Lair and water the motifs. Collect the five Zero Essence that appear at the locations listed below.
- Make the real thinner. At a crafting station in the Mirror Lair, combine all five Zero Essence to craft Real Ghostly Paint Thinner.
- Upgrade the Watering Can and free Zero. Use Real Ghostly Paint Thinner from your inventory to upgrade the Royal Watering Can, then water the correct Haunted Portrait again.
- Finish the confrontation. Once Zero is free, confront Oogie Boogie.

What the quest unlocks
The quest reference lists five Lucky Wheel Cogs as a quest item and “Unlock Zero” as the reward. Gameloft describes Zero as a permanent companion unlocked during Season of Scares. A separate Zero character page on the Dreamlight Valley Wiki still labels him upcoming and unavailable; that conflicts with the official event announcement and the quest-specific entry, so it appears stale for this quest’s October 7, 2026 release.

Check that you watered the correct portrait or motif, and confirm that you collected all five Zero Essence before trying to craft the Real Ghostly Paint Thinner.
