The iPhone Game Boy Emulator That Let You Import ROMs Was iGBA—and Apple Removed It

iGBA was the iPhone Game Boy emulator behind the 2024 headline about downloading ROMs from the web. Apple removed it a day later, but compliant emulators such as Delta remain allowed.

The app was iGBA, a free Game Boy emulator that appeared on Apple’s App Store on April 14, 2024. It could import Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance ROM files through the iPhone’s Files workflow—but Apple removed it the following day.

If you are looking for an iPhone emulator now, iGBA is not the app to install. In the United States and many other non-EU regions, the current official alternative is Delta.

What iGBA did

Contemporary reports identified iGBA as a Game Boy emulator for iPhone and iPad. Its reported workflow was straightforward:

  1. Download a ROM file to the iPhone.
  2. Locate it in the Files app.
  3. Use the share or “open in” menu to send the file to iGBA.
  4. Import and launch the game in the emulator.

The app reportedly supported Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. That did not mean iGBA supplied authorized copies of commercial games, nor did its App Store listing make downloading any ROM legal.

A MacRumors report from April 14, 2024 documented the launch and the ROM-import functionality.

The short iGBA timeline

  • April 6, 2024: Apple revised its App Review Guidelines to permit retro-console and PC-emulator apps under specified conditions.
  • April 14, 2024: iGBA appeared in the App Store worldwide.
  • April 14–15, 2024: Reports connected iGBA closely with GBA4iOS, an emulator created by Riley Testut.
  • April 15, 2024: Apple removed iGBA from the App Store.

The original headline is therefore easy to misread. It describes a real 2024 release, not an app that remains available today.

Why Apple removed iGBA

Apple said the emulator functionality itself had been approved. According to TechCrunch’s report, Apple removed iGBA after learning that the app copied another developer’s submission and violated App Store rules involving spam and copyright.

Reporting characterized iGBA as an ad-supported copy of GBA4iOS. The technical licensing questions around the code were more complicated: TechCrunch reported that GBA4iOS used GPL v2 code while Testut had added a restriction concerning App Store distribution. That dispute should not be treated as a settled court finding, but it explains why the removal was about the particular app rather than a reversal of Apple’s emulator policy.

Search results may still point to unofficial iGBA clones, IPA files, configuration profiles, or download pages. Those are not official App Store distribution and may introduce privacy, security, or malware risks. Apple’s removal of the original listing does not make those copies trustworthy.

Apple did not legalize ROM piracy

Apple’s revised policy allows compliant emulator apps to offer game downloads, but it does not grant permission to distribute copyrighted games. Apple’s current App Review Guidelines say that retro-console and PC-emulator apps may offer game downloads, subject to Apple’s rules and applicable law.

That distinction matters:

  • An emulator is software that interprets code from a game system.
  • A ROM is a digital copy of a game cartridge or game image.
  • The copyright status of a ROM depends on the game, rights holder, jurisdiction, and how the copy was made or obtained.

Downloading a commercial ROM from a random website is not automatically lawful because the file is easy to find. Likewise, owning a physical cartridge does not create a universal rule that makes every downloaded copy legal. Homebrew, public-domain, or otherwise lawfully distributed games are safer examples, but readers should check the law that applies to them.

What to use instead: Delta

Delta is the relevant developer-backed alternative. It was created by Riley Testut, the developer associated with GBA4iOS, and supports a wider range of Nintendo systems than iGBA’s reported lineup.

How to import a lawful game file into Delta

  1. Install Delta from its official App Store listing, where it is available.
  2. Obtain a game file from a lawful source, or use legally created homebrew software.
  3. Save the file to the iPhone’s Files app or another supported location.
  4. Use the iOS share sheet or Delta’s import option to open the file in Delta.
  5. Confirm that the game appears in Delta’s library, then launch it.
  6. Configure touch controls or pair a compatible controller if desired.

Labels and menus can change with iOS and Delta updates. If Delta does not appear in the share sheet, open Files, long-press the game file, choose Share, and look for Delta. A compressed archive may need to be decompressed first, depending on the format Delta accepts. If a supported game will not launch, check that the file is complete and compatible rather than assuming the emulator is broken.

To reduce save problems, avoid moving or renaming an imported game after creating saves, and use Delta’s supported backup or synchronization options when available.

Regional availability

Delta’s official download guide says that users outside the European Union can obtain it from Apple’s App Store, while users in the European Union should use AltStore PAL. Availability can differ by country and can change as Apple’s regional distribution rules evolve.

AltStore Classic is a more technical worldwide alternative that uses AltServer, requires a computer, and involves periodic refreshing. It is unnecessary for most U.S. readers who can install Delta directly from the App Store.

What the iGBA episode changed

The important development was not that Apple approved one particular ROM collection. It was that Apple opened the App Store to compliant retro-console emulators after years in which many such apps were rejected. iGBA then demonstrated that approval of emulator functionality did not shield an app from removal for copying, spam, copyright, privacy, misleading metadata, or other violations.

For readers, the practical rules are simple: use an emulator from its official distribution channel, treat ROM legality as a separate copyright question, and do not install unofficial iGBA packages simply because a search result still uses the name.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The iPhone Game Boy emulator in the 2024 headline was iGBA. It briefly supported importing Game Boy-family ROMs, but Apple removed it on April 15, 2024, after citing copying and App Store violations. Apple still permits compliant emulator apps; for current iPhone use, Delta is the official alternative in supported regions, but you remain responsible for using legally obtained game files.
