Yes— in the HBO television series, the main story begins twenty years after the outbreak. Sony Pictures places the parasitic-fungal outbreak in 2003 and says Joel is hired to transport 14-year-old Ellie to the Fireflies “twenty years later,” which places that journey in 2023 at the calendar-year level. The wording refers to the outbreak, not necessarily the exact anniversary of a particular day.
The short answer: 2003 outbreak, 2023 journey
The HBO version of The Last of Us uses a clear two-part timeline. Civilization is devastated by a parasitic fungal infection in 2003. Twenty years later, Joel is hired to smuggle Ellie to the rebel Fireflies. Adding twenty years to 2003 gives 2023, so the central journey takes place in 2023 in the series’ year-level chronology.

Sony Pictures’ official synopsis states the setup directly: “In 2003, a parasitic fungal infection ravaged the planet, turning humans into violent creatures known as the Infected. Twenty years later, hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to the rebel Fireflies.” You can read the synopsis at Sony Pictures’ official series page.
That makes the answer “yes,” provided “later” means later than the outbreak and the question is about the HBO series. The story does not require the audience to assume that Joel leaves exactly on the twentieth anniversary of the infection. The official material supplies a year and a relative interval, not a specific day-and-time calculation.

How the show’s timeline fits together
| Event | Time given by official material | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Parasitic fungal outbreak | 2003 | The infection ravages the planet and creates the Infected. |
| Joel’s assignment involving Ellie | Twenty years after the outbreak | The main premise begins after the two-decade jump. |
| Calendar year for the main journey | 2023 | 2003 plus twenty years, stated as a year-level inference. |
| Season 2 setting | Five years after Season 1 | A later time jump that does not change the original outbreak-to-journey interval. |
The table separates what the official synopsis says from the arithmetic that follows from it. “2003” and “twenty years later” are the supplied timeline markers. “2023” is the straightforward calendar-year result, but it should not be read as proof that every major event starts on one exact date in 2023.
What “20 years later” is describing
It is the gap between the outbreak and the main plot
The phrase describes the interval between the world-changing infection and Joel’s mission with Ellie. It is not saying that the characters spend twenty years traveling, nor that Ellie has existed for twenty years. Ellie is identified in the synopsis as 14 years old when Joel is hired to take her to the Fireflies. The time jump establishes the post-collapse society in which their story unfolds.
It is not necessarily an exact anniversary
A year-level timeline cannot establish whether Joel receives the assignment on the precise twentieth anniversary of the outbreak. “Twenty years later” is a relative description of the setting. Unless the series gives a specific date for both events, the safest interpretation is that the central events occur during 2023, roughly two decades after the 2003 disaster.

The date evidence here comes from the HBO series’ official promotional material. Warner Bros. Discovery describes the program as based on the video game developed by Naughty Dog for PlayStation platforms in its HBO/WBD series announcement. That adaptation context matters because a show’s calendar labels should not automatically be assigned to the game without separate, authoritative game-specific evidence.
Why the 2003 date matters
Placing the outbreak in 2003 gives the series a recognizable pre-collapse starting point. The world has twenty years to change before Joel and Ellie’s mission: institutions can fail, survivors can form new communities, and the Fireflies can become an organized rebel movement. The date therefore does more than answer a trivia question. It tells viewers how long the characters have lived with the consequences of the infection.
The wording also distinguishes the outbreak from the beginning of Joel and Ellie’s adventure. The infection ravages the planet first; the smuggling assignment comes later. When viewers hear that the story is “set twenty years later,” they should understand it as a description of the post-outbreak era rather than a claim that the first episode begins at the moment the twentieth year turns over.
Sony’s synopsis calls the infected people “violent creatures known as the Infected.” That phrasing identifies the 2003 event as the catastrophe that defines the setting. Joel’s work as a hardened survivor and Ellie’s role as a 14-year-old being transported to the Fireflies belong to the later period.
Does Season 2 change the answer?
No. Sony Pictures says the second season picks up five years after the events of Season 1. That is a separate, later interval. It extends the chronology after the original journey; it does not replace the show’s 2003 outbreak date or alter the fact that Season 1’s central premise is introduced twenty years after that outbreak.
Rank #3
In practical terms, there are two jumps to keep separate:
- The first jump runs from the 2003 outbreak to Joel’s assignment with Ellie, described as twenty years.
- The later jump runs from the events of Season 1 to Season 2, described as five years.
Confusing those intervals can make the timeline appear inconsistent. The five-year figure belongs to the continuation of the story, while the twenty-year figure establishes the original post-apocalyptic setting.
Is the game timeline the same?
The television series is an adaptation of the game, but the official evidence for the dates in this answer is specifically the HBO show’s material. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement identifies the series as based on the PlayStation game developed by Naughty Dog; it does not, in the cited description, provide a separate exact game-calendar year that should be substituted for the show’s 2003 and 2023 markers.

The game and the show share the core premise and characters, but adaptation-specific timelines should remain attached to the medium that officially states them. If someone asks about the game, the useful clarification is that the twenty-year wording established here comes from the television adaptation’s synopsis.

This distinction avoids a common mistake: treating an adaptation’s promotional chronology as if it were automatically a universal timeline for all releases. The available official statement supports the television series directly. It supports the broad premise of the game connection, not an additional exact game year.

“The story starts twenty years after Ellie was born”
That is not what the official wording says. The reference point is the parasitic fungal outbreak. Ellie is described as 14 when Joel is hired, so her age is a separate detail from the length of time since the catastrophe.
“Every scene occurs exactly in 2023”
The year-level placement applies to the main journey as described by the synopsis. Flashbacks, prologues or other scenes can have their own time positions within the series’ storytelling. The evidence establishes the setting’s broad year and interval, not a claim that every scene shares one date.

“Twenty years later means the show began on the outbreak’s anniversary”
The sources do not provide enough information to make that exact-anniversary claim. Treat “twenty years later” as the show’s stated relative jump and “2023” as the resulting calendar year.
Best Value
“Season 2 is still twenty years after the outbreak”
Season 2 is described as occurring five years after Season 1. It is therefore later than the initial twenty-year setting, not a restatement of it.
A precise way to answer the question
If you need a one-sentence explanation, say: “Yes. In HBO’s The Last of Us, the outbreak happens in 2003, and Joel’s mission to take 14-year-old Ellie to the Fireflies occurs twenty years later, placing the main story in 2023.” Add that 2023 is a calendar-year inference and that the wording does not establish an exact anniversary date.
This formulation answers the literal question while identifying the reference point, the medium and the qualification. It also prevents the most common mix-ups: using Ellie’s age as the time interval, applying the date automatically to the game, or confusing Season 2’s five-year jump with the original twenty-year one.

The HBO series does take place twenty years after its outbreak. The official chronology is 2003 for the parasitic fungal catastrophe, followed by Joel’s assignment with 14-year-old Ellie twenty years later. At the calendar-year level, that means 2023. The phrase describes the gap from outbreak to the main journey, not an exact anniversary, and Season 2’s separate five-year jump comes afterward.
