It is not a Persona sequel: its original world, cast and social conflicts give the formula a distinct identity.
What is Metaphor: ReFantazio?
ATLUS Studio Zero’s 2024 RPG takes place in a fantasy kingdom facing discrimination and political instability. The protagonist enters a royal tournament in which competing candidates fight for the throne and the kingdom’s future. That premise gives the adventure a clear dramatic engine: travel, alliances and battles all connect to a national succession crisis rather than a contemporary school-life setting.

The game’s political themes are central rather than decorative. ATLUS presents a kingdom where a marginalized people face discrimination, so the story’s conflicts concern power, prejudice and the kind of society a new ruler might create.
How the gameplay works
Turn-based battles with real-time field action
Combat is turn-based, but exploration is not entirely passive. Real-time actions in the field let you engage with enemies and the environment before entering formal encounters. The result is a hybrid rhythm: positioning and moment-to-moment attacks matter outside battle, while the decisive tactical choices happen through turn-based commands.

Companions, travel and decisions
Your journey is organized around companions, movement between locations and decisions that shape the campaign. Progression is therefore more than a sequence of fights. Building relationships and choosing how to spend your time are part of preparing for the larger political contest.
Persona DNA without the Persona setting
The connection to Persona is useful as orientation because the same ATLUS lineage is visible in the emphasis on party relationships, time management and layered character progression. Metaphor replaces Persona’s modern setting with a new fantasy world, a royal-tournament structure and a different political tone. Players should expect related design DNA, not a disguised sequel.
Why the setting and story stand out
- A focused political premise: the royal tournament keeps the central objective understandable even as the journey expands.
- A distinctive fantasy world: the kingdom’s social divisions and discrimination give the adventure stakes beyond personal revenge or monster hunting.
- A new cast and mythology: the game can use familiar ATLUS role-playing ideas while building its own history, institutions and conflicts.
This combination is the game’s strongest creative argument. Metaphor feels recognizably made by the Persona team, yet its fantasy politics give it a voice of its own.

Reception and evidence of quality
Metaphor received strong critical and commercial recognition. A SEGA Corporation release announcement lists a 94 PlayStation 5 Metascore; aggregator scores can change as databases are updated, so that figure should be treated as a current reported score rather than a permanent measurement.
SEGA Sammy Holdings reported that worldwide sales surpassed 1 million units on release day and listed the Steam customer-review status as “Overwhelmingly Positive.” The Game Awards 2024 recognized the game with Best RPG, Best Narrative and Best Art Direction. Nintendo’s current Switch 2 product page says it has received more than 50 prestigious awards, including Best RPG at The Game Awards 2024. The Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association gave it the Japan Game Awards 2025 Grand Award.
Those results point to an RPG that connected with critics and a large audience, while the individual awards identify its role-playing design, writing and visual direction as particular strengths.

Metaphor: ReFantazio succeeds because it adapts a proven ATLUS role-playing foundation to a setting with its own political purpose. The royal tournament supplies momentum, the fantasy kingdom gives the story room to examine discrimination and power, and the hybrid battle design keeps exploration from feeling disconnected from combat. Its broad 2024 platform release, major awards and strong reported sales reinforce the recommendation. Pick the PlayStation, Xbox or PC version that best matches your setup, or consider the separately listed Switch 2 edition when it launches on November 12, 2026.
