Nintendo describes it as a remake—not a straightforward port—with overhauled visuals, revised controls, expanded voiced cutscenes and other changes to the 1998 Nintendo 64 adventure.
What is the new Ocarina of Time?
It is a Nintendo Switch 2 remake of the 1998 Nintendo 64 game. Nintendo first described the classic as “reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026,” then detailed the updated version in its September announcement. Series producer Eiji Aonuma presented the first gameplay, according to Nintendo; the announcement does not include a direct quote from him. Nintendo’s June announcement and September 8 announcement establish the game’s return and remake details.

Nintendo’s description supports saying these elements have been updated, but does not establish how they look or feel in play compared with the original.
What does the Nintendo Switch App add?

- October 29, 2026: Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition, an anniversary Pro Controller and a carrying case with screen protector. Nintendo says its Japan-only console configuration is Japanese-language-only and does not include a game; that detail should not be generalized to other markets.
- Later in 2026: Two ocarinas, including a playable version and an electric HORI version. The game responds to melodies played or hummed near the Switch 2 microphone.
- 2027: Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo, which Nintendo says unlock retro-style masks.
- Spring 2027: LEGO The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – Link & Epona, a 1,750-piece collectible display model for adults, and Hasbro’s 27-inch Electronic Master Sword, which Nintendo says has more than 15 touch- and motion-activated sounds.
- 2027: Nintendo’s 40th Anniversary Concert series is planned for Japan, North America, Europe and Australia. Nintendo’s September release identifies Tokyo in January, Chicago in February, London in April and Melbourne in May; check Nintendo’s event listings for confirmed dates and venues.
- April 30, 2027: The planned worldwide theatrical release of the live-action film titled The Legend of Zelda.
Separately, Hasbro announced a multi-year Nintendo licensing partnership for Zelda products beginning in 2027. Its first reveals are three 6-inch-scale figures planned for San Diego Comic-Con, July 23–26, 2026. Hasbro’s announcement covers that partnership.
