Hollywood has produced two live-action films, in 1994 and 2009, and both damaged the series’ reputation in different ways. Capcom and Legendary’s new film is the third attempt, scheduled for October 16, 2026, but it cannot be called a success until audiences, critics and the box office decide its fate.
Why people call the live-action films cursed
The word “curse” is shorthand for a clear two-film pattern, not proof of anything supernatural. The first Hollywood adaptation became notorious for its quality, while the second received even harsher reviews and failed commercially. That gives the 2026 production a low starting point: it is not merely introducing a game series to moviegoers, but trying to repair a reputation damaged by consecutive disappointments.

Street Fighter (1994): the reputation-maker
The 1994 film was the first Hollywood live-action adaptation of Capcom’s fighting game. Its cast and military-action approach gave the property a recognizable studio-movie shape, but the result became a critical punchline. Film historian Leonard Maltin later described it as “one of the worst movies ever inspired by a video game.”
That judgment is severe, but it explains why the franchise’s movie problem began with the first release. The film established that recognizable costumes, names and fighting-game imagery were not enough to make a convincing story.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009): the measurable collapse
The second live-action adaptation focused on Chun-Li and was documented as a critical and commercial failure. Its review scores are unusually stark:
| Measure | 2009 result | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Rotten Tomatoes | 3% positive from 59 critics’ reviews | Near-unanimous negative critical response |
| Metacritic | 17/100 | Very unfavorable reviews from the cited 2009 record |
| Worldwide box office | $12.8 million | Revenue far below the reported $50 million budget |
Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus called the film “a perfectly forgettable video game adaptation,” attributing the result to a shallow plot and miscast performers. Compared with the 1994 movie’s already poor reputation, the 2009 film made the case for a curse look commercial as well as artistic.
What the 2026 Street Fighter movie is about
Capcom announced in 2025 that filming had commenced on a new live-action movie with Legendary Entertainment. The two companies are jointly financing the production, and Capcom announced an October 16, 2026 theatrical release date.
The story returns to the World Warrior Tournament
The official synopsis sets the story in 1993. Estranged Ryu and Ken Masters are pulled back into combat when Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament. A conspiracy then forces the pair to confront each other and their pasts.
Rank #2
- Stunning visuals and an all new battle system depicts the world of Street Fighter with unprecedented detail.
- For the first time ever, SF6 provides an ever evolving immersive storytelling experience that gives power to the player to create their own World Warrior and truly engage in the Street Fighter Universe
- SF6 provides the gold standard fighting experience for both casual and battle-tested pros can enjoy for years to come.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the international version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions. DLC content may not work unless using an EU Playstation account as stated this is an EU Import Region Free Version
This setup is important because it uses the series’ tournament framework while keeping its three most recognizable characters at the center. It is not simply a solo origin story for one fighter; the premise creates a reason for Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li to share the same conflict and gives the film a route into the wider fighting-game world.
Announced cast
| Character or billing | Actor |
|---|---|
| Ryu | Andrew Koji |
| Ken Masters | Noah Centineo |
| Chun-Li | Callina Liang |
| Additional announced cast | Joe Anoai, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Jason Momoa, among others |
The announced information does not assign the additional performers to specific characters, so an actor for M. Bison cannot be identified from the confirmed cast details alone.
How the three films compare
| Film | Game and character framework | Critical reception | Commercial or production context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Street Fighter (1994) | First Hollywood live-action adaptation; its approach became associated with a broadly criticized interpretation of the property | Harsh retrospective reputation; Maltin called it one of the worst movies inspired by a video game | Earlier studio adaptation; the cited material does not establish a budget or worldwide gross here |
| The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) | Chun-Li-centered story rather than a tournament ensemble built around Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li | 3% positive from 59 Rotten Tomatoes critics’ reviews; 17/100 on Metacritic | $12.8 million worldwide against a reported $50 million budget |
| Untitled live-action film (2026) | 1993 setting; Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li reunite around the World Warrior Tournament and a conspiracy | Not established before release | Capcom and Legendary jointly financing; theatrical release announced for October 16, 2026 |
The third film therefore has a more recognizably shared franchise structure than the Chun-Li-only approach of 2009, but that is a premise-level advantage, not evidence that the finished movie works.
Why Street Fighter is still worth another attempt
A large game audience remains
Capcom reported more than 49 million cumulative Street Fighter units shipped worldwide as of December 31, 2022. That installed audience gives a movie a substantial base of people who already know the characters, rivalries and tournament concept. Capcom has also said that film and television adaptations are intended to broaden awareness beyond the gaming audience and increase the value of its intellectual property.
Rank #3
- Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
- Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
- Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
The current game keeps the brand visible
Capcom identifies Street Fighter 6 as the current fighting-game entry. It is listed for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, giving the film a current game-era connection rather than asking viewers to remember only older releases.
Merchandising can extend interest beyond opening weekend
On February 2, 2026, Hasbro announced a licensing partnership with Legendary for Street Fighter action figures, toys and collectibles timed to the film’s October 16, 2026 theatrical release. The announcement confirms the product category and timing, but it does not establish the final retail assortment or any affiliate or commission arrangement.
Can the 2026 film finally break the curse?
It has a plausible route: center the best-known characters, use the World Warrior Tournament as the engine of the plot, and connect the movie to a still-active game franchise and a planned merchandise program. Those choices address weaknesses implied by the earlier films’ reputations, especially the need for a coherent ensemble and a story that feels like Street Fighter rather than a generic action movie.
They do not guarantee a successful adaptation. As of the announced release date, there are no established review scores or box-office results for the new film. The curse remains unbroken until the finished movie demonstrates that it can satisfy both existing players and viewers who have never played the games.
