The 2024 HarperCollins Deluxe Illustrated Boxed Set (ISBN 978-0-00-866943-0) contains the complete three-volume hardback The Lord of the Rings, Alan Lee artwork, an illustrated slipcase, sprayed page edges, three removable art cards and two foldout maps. It does not include The Hobbit. That distinction matters because “The Lord of the Rings box set” is also used for a four-book Hobbit-plus-Lord of the Rings set, a 60th Anniversary set with a Reader’s Companion, a Tolkien-illustrated single volume and a film tie-in gift set.

What is in the 2024 Deluxe Illustrated Boxed Set?
The edition most often meant by the deluxe illustrated box-set listing is ISBN 978-0-00-866943-0. HarperCollins lists it as a three-volume hardback edition released on 10 October 2024, with 1,472 pages across the set. The books are housed in an illustrated slipcase.
- All three volumes of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
- Illustrations by Alan Lee. HarperCollins describes the edition as containing more than fifty full-page colour paintings.
- Sprayed page edges on the books.
- Three removable art cards.
- Two foldout maps.
- An illustrated slipcase.
These are the stated contents and presentation features. The listing does not advertise The Hobbit as part of this three-volume set, and it does not identify a separate companion volume. The art cards are loose, removable pieces rather than an additional book, and the maps are foldouts associated with the set; neither changes the three-volume count.

What the artwork means
Alan Lee is the illustrator for this deluxe set. His watercolor work is different from the author-created artwork in Tolkien’s single-volume illustrated edition and from the film-image cover treatment used on the film tie-in gift set. If a listing says “illustrated” without naming the artist, check the ISBN before buying. “Illustrated” by itself does not tell you whether the images are by Lee, Tolkien or a film-design team.
How the physical binding is described
HarperCollins describes the 2024 product as three hardbacks in an illustrated slipcase. TolkienShop gives a more specific construction description—quarter-leatherbound books without dust jackets. That bookseller description should be treated as an additional listing detail, not as a substitute for checking the publisher’s edition record or the copy offered by a particular retailer. A marketplace photograph may show the slipcase but omit the cards or maps, so ask for a complete contents confirmation if those extras matter to you.
At a glance: the five products most often confused
The key questions are not simply “Is it illustrated?” or “Is it a box set?” Check whether the package has three or four books, whether The Hobbit is present, whether the fourth volume is a companion, and whose artwork is used.
- Three books, Alan Lee, deluxe extras: the 2024 set, ISBN 978-0-00-866943-0.
- Four books, including The Hobbit, Alan Lee watercolor art: ISBN 978-0-00-837610-9.
- Four hardbacks, including a companion: the 60th Anniversary set, ISBN 978-0-00-758114-6.
- One hardback, Tolkien’s own visual material: ISBN 978-0-00-847128-6.
- Four books with movie imagery: the film tie-in gift set, ISBN 978-0-00-880239-4.
Why “box set” can mean five different products
Publishers and booksellers use similar wording for sets with materially different contents. The following comparison separates the five editions by books included, artwork and format.
| Edition and ISBN | Books or contents listed | Artwork or presentation | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 Deluxe Illustrated Boxed Set 978-0-00-866943-0 |
Three hardbacks containing The Lord of the Rings | Alan Lee illustrations; illustrated slipcase; sprayed edges; three removable art cards; two foldout maps | Premium three-volume Lord of the Rings-only set; 1,472 pages; released 10 October 2024 |
| The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Boxed Set 978-0-00-837610-9 |
Four books: The Hobbit plus the three Lord of the Rings volumes | Illustrated throughout in watercolor by Alan Lee | The four-book set that includes The Hobbit |
| 60th Anniversary Boxed Set 978-0-00-758114-6 |
Four hardback volumes, including The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion | Tolkien’s unused 1950s jacket designs were reworked for this edition | Adds companion material rather than The Hobbit |
| Single-volume illustrated edition 978-0-00-847128-6 |
The complete text in one hardback | Thirty colour illustrations, maps and sketches by J.R.R. Tolkien | One-volume format and Tolkien’s own illustrations |
| Film tie-in gift set 978-0-00-880239-4 |
Four books containing The Hobbit and the complete Lord of the Rings work | Film-image covers | Film-themed presentation and inclusion of The Hobbit |
Does the 2024 set include The Hobbit?
No. The 2024 Deluxe Illustrated Boxed Set is a three-volume Lord of the Rings set. The separate ISBN 978-0-00-837610-9 identifies the four-book illustrated set that combines The Hobbit with the trilogy. The film tie-in gift set, ISBN 978-0-00-880239-4, also includes The Hobbit, but its covers use film images.
A listing that says “four books” therefore needs a second check: four books may mean The Hobbit plus the trilogy, or it may mean the 60th Anniversary set’s trilogy plus A Reader’s Companion. The contents, not the number four alone, determine which product it is. If the listing says “complete Tolkien set” without naming the fourth book, treat that wording as incomplete until the ISBN and contents are confirmed.

Edition-by-edition guide
2024 Deluxe Illustrated Boxed Set — 978-0-00-866943-0
Choose this edition if your priority is a display-oriented, three-volume presentation of the trilogy with Alan Lee artwork and physical extras. Its defining features are the illustrated slipcase, sprayed edges, three removable art cards and two foldout maps. The publisher’s listing gives a 10 October 2024 release date and 1,472 pages for the set.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe additional art materials are separate from the text volumes: the cards are removable, while the maps are foldouts. The publisher describes more than fifty full-page colour paintings, making this the Alan Lee-focused deluxe option among the editions compared here. It is the clearest choice when you want the trilogy alone rather than an expanded package containing The Hobbit or a reference companion.
The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Boxed Set — 978-0-00-837610-9
This is the straightforward choice for readers who want Bilbo’s story together with the trilogy in one four-book gift set. Alan Lee provides watercolor illustrations throughout. It is not the 2024 three-volume deluxe set, even though both products use Alan Lee’s name and illustrated-boxed-set language.
Its four-book count is meaningful because the extra volume is The Hobbit, not supplementary commentary. Confirm that the listing names both titles if you are buying it as a complete reading sequence.
60th Anniversary Boxed Set — 978-0-00-758114-6
The 60th Anniversary edition also has four hardback volumes, but its fourth book is The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion. It is therefore aimed at readers who want contextual and reference material alongside the trilogy rather than an edition that adds The Hobbit. The set’s presentation reworks Tolkien’s unused 1950s jacket designs.
Do not infer from “60th Anniversary” that this is the Alan Lee deluxe set or that it includes the companion cards and foldout maps. Its distinguishing feature in the listing is the companion volume and the reworked historical jacket designs.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

Single-volume illustrated edition — 978-0-00-847128-6
This edition puts the complete text in one hardback. Its 30 colour illustrations, maps and sketches are by Tolkien himself, which makes it fundamentally different from an Alan Lee edition. It is the compact option for readers who prefer one book and author-created artwork over a multi-volume boxed presentation.
The one-volume format is also a useful identification clue: a listing showing one hardback cannot be the three-volume 2024 deluxe set or either four-book box set, even if the cover uses similar Tolkien branding.
Film tie-in gift set — 978-0-00-880239-4
The film tie-in set contains four books: The Hobbit and the complete Lord of the Rings work. Its identifying feature is film-image cover art. If a product photograph prominently shows movie imagery, verify that this is the edition you want before assuming it is an illustrated literary set.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The film treatment describes the covers, not Alan Lee’s watercolor illustration program or Tolkien’s own sketches. For a reader seeking matching movie-style presentation, that distinction is the point; for a collector seeking interior artwork, it is a reason to inspect the edition record carefully.
How to identify the correct listing before you buy
- Find the ISBN. Match the number printed in the listing details or on the back of the box with the edition numbers in the table. Similar titles are not enough.
- Count the volumes. Three volumes normally indicates the 2024 trilogy-only deluxe set. Four volumes require the next checks because the fourth book could be The Hobbit or A Reader’s Companion.
- Read the illustrator credit. “Alan Lee” indicates the Lee-illustrated sets; “J.R.R. Tolkien” identifies the single-volume edition with Tolkien’s own illustrations, maps and sketches; film-image covers indicate the tie-in set.
- Check for the companion. The phrase A Reader’s Companion identifies the 60th Anniversary set, not the Hobbit-plus-trilogy box.
- Check the physical extras. Sprayed edges, three removable art cards, two foldout maps and an illustrated slipcase belong to the stated contents of the 2024 deluxe set.
- Compare the product photograph with the description. Marketplace listings can reuse broad “boxed set” wording. If the photograph and ISBN disagree, ask the seller to confirm the exact ISBN and included books before ordering.
- Ask about completeness for used copies. Request confirmation that all listed volumes, cards, maps and the slipcase are present. The publisher’s contents describe a complete product, but they do not guarantee the condition or completeness of an individual second-hand copy.
Choosing by the feature that matters most
- You want the newest premium trilogy presentation: select the 2024 Deluxe Illustrated Boxed Set, ISBN 978-0-00-866943-0.
- You want The Hobbit and the trilogy together with Alan Lee art: select ISBN 978-0-00-837610-9.
- You want study and reference material with the trilogy: select the 60th Anniversary set, ISBN 978-0-00-758114-6, because it adds A Reader’s Companion.
- You want Tolkien’s own visual work in one book: select the single-volume edition, ISBN 978-0-00-847128-6.
- You want movie-related cover design: select the film tie-in gift set, ISBN 978-0-00-880239-4.
- You want collectible extras specifically: look for the 2024 ISBN and verify the three removable art cards, two foldout maps, sprayed edges and illustrated slipcase in the description.
What is not established by the edition descriptions
The product records establish contents, formats, ISBNs and the stated release information. They do not establish a current price, present stock status, regional availability, or the condition of an individual marketplace copy. A retailer may show a used, incomplete or differently packaged copy under a broad title, so the ISBN and a written contents list are more reliable than a search-result headline. Prices can also vary by seller and condition, so no single figure should be treated as the standard cost of an edition.
Likewise, the descriptions identify presentation features but do not constitute a hands-on durability test. Sprayed edges, slipcase artwork, cards and maps are listed features; their condition depends on the particular copy you receive. The quarter-leatherbound, no-dust-jacket description comes from TolkienShop, while HarperCollins’ own description is the safer baseline for identifying the three hardbacks and slipcase.

Bottom line for shoppers and collectors
If the listing is for ISBN 978-0-00-866943-0, expect three Alan Lee-illustrated hardbacks containing The Lord of the Rings, an illustrated slipcase, sprayed edges, three removable art cards and two foldout maps. It is not a Hobbit set. For The Hobbit plus the trilogy, look for ISBN 978-0-00-837610-9 or the film tie-in ISBN 978-0-00-880239-4; for a companion volume, look for ISBN 978-0-00-758114-6; and for Tolkien’s own illustrations in one volume, look for ISBN 978-0-00-847128-6.
Those ISBN checks prevent the most common mistake: paying for one interpretation of “Lord of the Rings box set” while receiving another. Before ordering, match the ISBN, volume count, illustrator and named extras; for a used copy, also confirm that the cards, maps and slipcase have not been removed.
