The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria launched on Steam on August 27, 2024, alongside The Golden Update. The update brought Sandbox Mode to Steam and Xbox, added new gold-themed crafting and building options, and expanded the game’s weapons, armor, and world content.
What kind of game is Return to Moria?
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is a survival-crafting adventure set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth. Players lead Dwarves seeking to reclaim Moria, mining its depths, gathering resources, crafting equipment, building shelters, fighting enemies, and exploring procedurally generated areas. The Steam listing describes those core activities, while the launch announcement places the Steam release in the context of the broader update.
What did the Golden Update add?
The update’s name refers in part to new uses for gold and gold-themed equipment and construction. The publisher’s Golden Update 1.3.x patch notes, modified August 30, 2024, list these additions:
- Mint coins from gold, find gold ingots in treasure chests, and smelt the ingots.
- Build an XL Treasure Pile called the Treasure Hoard.
- Craft golden variants of the Belegost, Khazad, Erebor, and Durin armor sets.
- Build eight golden wall sections, a golden door, and a golden floor.
The same notes also describe an early-game Oakenshield, new weapon and armor collections, a hidden ancient tomb in new campaign and sandbox worlds, changes to ruined biomes, and build-lore shelves. Studying those shelves can provide a building buff. These are patch-note features; the notes do not establish how they affect balance or moment-to-moment play.

Campaign or Sandbox: which mode fits?

The Golden Update made Sandbox Mode available beyond its earlier Epic Games Store beta. The publisher describes it as unpredictable, with minimal tutorials, and recommends it for people familiar with Return to Moria or other survival games. That makes Campaign the more natural first choice if you want more direction; Sandbox is better suited to players happy to learn by exploring.
How does multiplayer and crossplay work?
Players on Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 can join one another’s games, according to the official announcement. A host playing on Steam or Epic Games Store can run a session for up to eight players, including people joining from other platforms.

What did the Steam launch mean?
Steam’s release date was August 27, 2024, the same day as the Xbox release and The Golden Update. The update also came to the game’s other supported platforms, so it was not a Steam-exclusive content release. Steam lists digital additions including a soundtrack and digital art exhibition; the listing does not establish physical editions or game-specific accessories.
In the launch announcement, North Beach Games CEO John Miller said the update offered “the deepest look yet at a survival-crafting experience based on The Lord of the Rings.” That is the publisher’s promotional characterization, not an independent assessment.
