The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition Review

The Legacy Edition brings back a cooperative Tolkien action RPG with modern-platform conveniences, but its repetitive combat and reported bugs make it a qualified recommendation.

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition is an appealing return for Tolkien fans and players nostalgic for the 2011 action RPG, especially if they can play its three-character adventure in co-op. But this is closer to a faithful re-release than a ground-up remake: repetitive combat, opaque systems, and launch-period bugs reported by reviewers make it a qualified recommendation rather than an easy pick for everyone.

Is War in the North Legacy Edition worth playing?

It is most worth considering if you want a Tolkien adventure set alongside the events of The Lord of the Rings, or remember the original game fondly. Its strongest appeal is the chance to fight through Middle-earth with a party, using three heroes with different roles. The setting and cooperative play carry more weight than the combat itself, which reviewers found repetitive.

Nintendo Life’s Ethan Zack reviewed the North American Switch 2 version, captured docked. He praised the setting and co-op but reported audio problems, performance dips, visual glitches, and a miniboss that disappeared and blocked progress. In his account, that issue and the save system forced a restart. These are reported experiences from his review, not confirmation that every player or platform will encounter the same problems.

Matt Evans’s TechRadar review was based on the original Nintendo Switch version, not Switch 2. He reported playing for 15 hours across handheld and TV modes, and found it diverting for fans of the original or straightforward action RPGs. He also criticized repetitive combat, a weak story, technical problems, and awkward character swapping and inventory management. His platform and review experience are distinct from Zack’s, so the two should not be treated as a controlled comparison.

What kind of game is it?

The story runs parallel to Frodo and Sam’s journey to Mount Doom. You face Agandaûr, a servant of Sauron building an army in the North, as one of three heroes: Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster; or Farin, a Dwarven Champion. Official listings describe character switching, distinct combat roles, skill and gear progression, familiar Tolkien characters and places, and cooperative play.

That premise gives the game a different party perspective on the familiar conflict, but it does not make the experience a newly built modern action RPG. The central loop remains a 2011-era action RPG structure: fight through encounters, develop characters, and improve their equipment. Zack also found its systems difficult to parse, while Evans noted friction around swapping characters and handling inventory.

What changed in the Legacy Edition?

The original game released in 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. The Legacy Edition brings it back on newer platforms with conveniences that reviewers noted, including autosaves, improved framerates, hot-swapping, and gyro aiming. Which additions apply or feel relevant depends on the platform and reviewer experience; for example, Zack discussed hot-swapping and gyro aiming in his Switch 2 review, while Evans mentioned autosaves and improved framerates in his Nintendo Switch review.

Calling this a “remaster” can overstate the scale of the update. Nintendo Life characterizes it as somewhere between a basic port and a full remaster, with the underlying game largely intact. If you are looking for a comprehensive visual or gameplay rebuild, the Legacy Edition is not established as that kind of release.

How do the platforms and release dates differ?

The reported release timing is not identical across systems. The Legacy Edition was reported available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on August 11, 2026; Nintendo’s UK listing gives August 18, 2026 for Switch 2. TechRadar also lists Nintendo Switch availability, but the official Nintendo listing cited here is specifically for Switch 2. Check the relevant regional storefront for current platform availability.

Switch 2 Nintendo UK lists August 18, 2026. Nintendo Life reviewed the North American Switch 2 version, captured docked.

The Switch and Switch 2 reviews are separate platform experiences, not a direct performance comparison. Do not assume one reviewer’s technical observations describe every version.

Does it have co-op?

Yes. Official platform listings describe online and split-screen co-op for one player and up to two friends, for a party of up to three. The game can also be played solo, with character switching forming part of the listed feature set. The cited listings do not establish cross-platform play, so do not assume friends on different systems can join the same session.

Online play has platform-specific subscription requirements. The PlayStation Store listing says online multiplayer requires PS Plus; Xbox says console online multiplayer requires a qualifying Game Pass subscription. Check the current store terms for your account and region before buying. The US PlayStation and Xbox listings showed $19.99 when checked in 2026; storefront prices can change and that figure is not a guaranteed price elsewhere or later.

Who should play it?

  • Good fit: Tolkien fans who want a parallel adventure with recognizable characters and locations, and players who value three-person cooperative combat.
  • Also a good fit: Players with fond memories of the original who want to revisit its core adventure on newer platforms.
  • Think twice: Players seeking varied combat, streamlined systems, or a thoroughly rebuilt modern action RPG may find the largely unchanged structure limiting.
  • Wait for more confidence: If technical polish is essential, consider that both cited reviewers reported problems on their respective Switch versions; this evidence does not establish that a patch has resolved them or that the same issues affect every platform.

Verdict

War in the North – Legacy Edition preserves the appeal of a cooperative Tolkien action RPG and adds some useful modern-platform conveniences, but it also brings back a game whose combat and systems can feel dated. It is easiest to recommend to fans of the setting and the original release, particularly those who can play with friends. For everyone else, the repetitive loop and the reviewers’ reported launch-period issues are meaningful reasons for caution.
