Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is not a universal virtual society, but it may represent a more practical version of the metaverse idea: a persistent, planet-scale digital world built around an activity people already understand. Players can fly through live weather, share the world with other pilots, communicate by voice, leave aircraft to explore on foot, and progress through careers ranging from search and rescue to aerial firefighting.
That is the basis of Microsoft Flight Simulator head Jorg Neumann’s argument that the metaverse did not disappear. Instead, some of its most difficult ideas—digital twins, shared presence, cloud delivery and real-world mapping—may work better inside focused products than as a standalone social platform.
A metaverse with a reason to exist
The original metaverse pitch promised persistent virtual spaces, avatars, real-time social interaction, user-created environments, digital commerce and, eventually, interoperability between different experiences. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 delivers some of those ingredients, but within a much narrower frame.
Its purpose is aviation. That distinction matters. Rather than asking users to enter an abstract virtual world and decide what to do there, MSFS gives them an immediate reason to participate: fly anywhere on Earth, operate different aircraft, complete jobs, explore real locations and share the experience with other people.

In an interview with GamesBeat, Neumann argued that a digital twin needs a consumer purpose. For Flight Simulator, that purpose is realistic aviation. The result is not a complete simulation of society or reality, but a highly detailed model of the planet designed for flying and related activities.
The strongest interpretation is therefore not that MSFS 2024 is the metaverse. It is that the metaverse’s most durable technical ideas may survive in purpose-built worlds.
What makes Flight Simulator 2024 metaverse-like?
Microsoft’s simulator combines several systems that are usually discussed separately when people describe the metaverse:
- A shared world: Players can fly in the same geographic locations and encounter other users on the same server.
- Digital identity: Players select and customize a character rather than existing only as a cockpit camera.
- Embodied presence: The game supports leaving aircraft and exploring on foot in appropriate locations.
- Communication: Official material describes player voice communication across the experience.
- Persistence through services: World data, live conditions, updates and community content are delivered through an ongoing online platform.
- Multiple activities: Career mode gives the world goals beyond selecting a departure airport and flying to a destination.
- Community participation: Add-ons and Marketplace content extend the simulator beyond Microsoft’s original assets.
These features create a stronger sense of place than a conventional flight menu. The world is not merely a backdrop for aircraft; it is a shared system of geography, weather, traffic, missions, players and data.
The Earth is the game’s largest asset
MSFS 2024 builds on geographic and elevation data, photogrammetry, buildings, vegetation, airports, landmarks, weather systems and simulation rules. Procedural generation supplies the scale, while hand-authored locations provide higher-fidelity airports and points of interest.
In the GamesBeat interview, Microsoft and the development team described a world with more than 100,000 square kilometers of countryside photogrammetry, over 150 hand-crafted airports, 2,000 glider airports, 10,000 heliports, 2,000 points of interest and 900 oil rigs. The team also reported procedural generation of approximately 40,000 airports, 80,000 helipads, 1.5 billion buildings and nearly 3 trillion trees.
Those figures are Microsoft or team claims reported in the interview, not independent measurements. They nevertheless show the design philosophy: the simulator combines authored detail with automated systems rather than attempting to build every part of the planet by hand.
Microsoft has also described the new version as offering roughly 4,000 times more surface detail than its predecessor. That comparison should likewise be treated as a company claim rather than an independently audited benchmark. The important point is architectural: the simulator attempts to represent the entire globe while concentrating expensive manual work where it produces the greatest visual and gameplay value.
Cloud computing is the bargain behind the scale
Flight Simulator 2020 already used a hybrid model in which substantial data was streamed while the client performed important local work. Neumann described MSFS 2024 as moving more world data and computation into Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.
The benefit is obvious. A planet-scale data set does not need to be installed in full on every player’s machine. GamesBeat reported that the 2020 edition could require downloads approaching half a terabyte, while an interview-era preview of the 2024 edition used roughly 23 GB locally. Microsoft’s official FAQ lists 50 GB of storage in its published PC specification table, so the 23 GB figure should not be treated as the final current requirement.
The smaller local footprint does not make the game offline. Microsoft’s official connectivity documentation says MSFS 2024 requires a constant internet connection to stream content and does not support fully offline play. A rolling cache can reduce repeated downloads, but it cannot remove the online requirement.

This is the central cloud bargain:
- Advantage: More global scenery and live data can be available without storing the entire world locally.
- Cost: The experience depends on bandwidth, latency, server capacity and Microsoft’s continued operation of the service.
- Practical consequence: Flying repeatedly in one region may benefit from a rolling cache, while constantly visiting new locations can demand considerably more data.
Players can reduce bandwidth use by adjusting features such as photogrammetry, live weather, live traffic and multiplayer, but doing so also makes the world less dynamic. A cloud-streamed simulator is not simply an offline game with a smaller installation.

Free Flight remains the most direct expression of the digital-twin idea: choose a real place, select an aircraft and take off. But MSFS 2024 broadens participation through a career system that lets players gain experience, complete certifications, build reputation and unlock new aviation activities.
Microsoft’s career-mode overview highlights activities including:
- Passenger transport
- Medevac flights
- Remote cargo operations
- Aerial firefighting
- Search and rescue
- Ballooning and other aviation roles
The significance is bigger than a list of missions. Career progression gives the world a reason to be revisited. Simulation provides rules, while the career system supplies goals. Together they turn geography into an environment with practical meaning rather than a globe viewer with aircraft attached.
Players can also select a character, customize their appearance and use a player voice for communication. Other pilots can occupy the same airspace, and the game supports multiplayer flying with friends or users on the same server. That supplies shared presence, communication and embodiment—the social ingredients most closely associated with the metaverse.

Where the metaphor stops
Calling MSFS 2024 a metaverse is useful only if its limits remain visible. It is not:
- A universal social network or virtual city.
- A cross-platform identity system.
- An interoperable asset economy connecting unrelated virtual worlds.
- A complete model of human society or every physical process on Earth.
- A product designed primarily for socializing rather than aviation.
- An offline experience.
Other platforms are stronger examples of particular metaverse qualities. Roblox and Minecraft offer more extensive user creation and social world-building. VRChat is more focused on avatars and social presence. Google Earth is better suited to geographic browsing. DCS World and X-Plane provide useful comparisons for specialist flight simulation, though their world representation and service models differ.
MSFS occupies a distinctive middle ground: a serious simulator with a global digital environment, cloud infrastructure and social features. Its players are primarily there to fly. Avatars and voice communication enrich that activity, but they do not transform the game into a general-purpose virtual society.
Why focused worlds may be the metaverse’s practical future
The failure of the broad metaverse pitch was not necessarily the failure of virtual worlds. A general-purpose platform asks users to accept the technology before giving them a compelling reason to return. A focused world reverses that relationship.
Flight Simulator has several advantages:
- Its purpose is immediately understandable.
- Real-world geography provides an enormous content foundation.
- Physics, aircraft systems and weather create consistent rules.
- Career activities give users goals.
- The world remains valuable even when multiplayer is optional.
- Cloud and mapping infrastructure solve a recognizable problem: representing the planet at scale.
The same logic could apply elsewhere. Virtual worlds may become more useful when attached to activities such as building, training, gaming, shopping or attending events. Users do not need to be persuaded to want “the metaverse” if they already want the experience built inside it.

MSFS 2024 also demonstrates why the cloud bargain is not purely a technical triumph. The game experienced server and connectivity problems during its November 19, 2024 launch. In a November 28, 2024 update, Microsoft said service reliability had returned to greater than 99.999 percent. That was a post-launch reliability report, not a guarantee that future outages are impossible.

The launch exposed a basic weakness in any persistent online world: when authentication, streaming or backend services fail, the player may lose access even if their own hardware is functioning. Cloud delivery reduces local storage and can improve the scale of the world, but it transfers dependency to networks and data centers.
Hardware also remains relevant. The official hardware guide describes a spectrum from a standard controller to a full home cockpit. A controller is the simplest entry point. A joystick or HOTAS setup improves analog control, while a yoke, throttle quadrant and rudder pedals suit general aviation and cockpit-focused players. VR can add immersion but introduces additional performance and comfort considerations.

PC offers the broadest support for mods, add-ons, advanced peripherals and graphical customization. Xbox reduces setup complexity but has more restrictive peripheral compatibility: Microsoft’s documentation warns that most PC flight peripherals are not automatically compatible with Xbox Series X|S unless they are specifically designed to support both platforms. Platform availability and feature parity also vary. MSFS 2024 launched on Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming on November 19, 2024; Microsoft’s later platform guide lists PC, Xbox and PS5/PS5 Pro.
Data, representation and commercial boundaries
A digital twin is never a neutral copy of reality. It reflects the data sources, imagery, mapping decisions and assumptions used to construct it. Microsoft has said it worked with the United Nations on representing humanity in the product, but that claim should be understood as Microsoft’s description of its process, not proof that the resulting virtual Earth is universally complete or culturally neutral.
Nor is the entire world necessarily one all-inclusive product. Editions contain different aircraft and airports, and Marketplace add-ons extend the platform through separately distributed content. Microsoft’s launch materials listed 70 aircraft and 150 airports for the Standard Edition; edition contents and storefront presentation can change, so buyers should check the current product page.
The Xbox US storefront has listed Standard at $69.99, Deluxe at $99.99, Premium Deluxe at $129.99 and Aviator at $199.99, although regional prices and promotions change. The same storefront has listed the game in qualifying Game Pass tiers, while console multiplayer requires an eligible subscription. These are purchase considerations, not evidence that every player receives the same world or feature set.

Use the label as an analytical checklist rather than a buying instruction:
| Metaverse criterion | How MSFS 2024 performs |
|---|---|
| World scale | Exceptionally strong: it represents the planet at global scale. |
| Purpose | Strong: aviation supplies clear activities, rules and goals. |
| Shared presence | Present through multiplayer aircraft, shared locations and communication. |
| Embodiment | Present through selectable characters and on-foot exploration. |
| Creation | Supported mainly through community content and add-ons, not an unrestricted world-building system. |
| Interoperability | Limited: identities and assets remain within Microsoft’s ecosystem. |
| Accessibility | Broad platform support and controller play help, but connectivity and hardware requirements remain barriers. |
| Reliability | Dependent on online services, with launch problems illustrating the risk. |
On this basis, MSFS 2024 is compelling evidence for a focused, cloud-powered virtual world. It is much weaker evidence for a universal metaverse in which identities, assets and activities move freely between unrelated platforms.
The verdict
The metaverse did not move wholesale into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. What moved there were some of its hardest engineering problems: maintaining a planet-scale 3D world, streaming it from the cloud, representing real places, supporting shared presence and giving users digital bodies.
Those ideas become more convincing because Flight Simulator gives them a job to do. The game is primarily an aviation simulator, not a branded replacement for the internet. But it shows why the metaverse may have a future in focused experiences: worlds are more persuasive when users enter them to accomplish something they already care about.
