Yes, the Microsoft Excel World Championship returned to ESPN in 2026—but it is no longer “coming this week.” The competition was included in ESPN8: The Ocho’s programming from August 6 through August 9, 2026. Viewers looking for the event now should check ESPN’s Watch listings for an on-demand replay, since availability can vary by provider, account and region.
The championship is not a conventional multiplayer videogame. Competitors solve timed spreadsheet cases, construct formulas and models, and race for points while viewers follow a changing leaderboard.

When was the Excel World Championship on ESPN?
ESPN’s 2026 Ocho schedule placed the Microsoft Excel World Championship within the network’s August 6–9 programming window. ESPN described the 2026 edition of ESPN8: The Ocho as its 10th anniversary presentation, featuring 74.5 hours of unusual and niche sports programming across ESPN platforms.
That means headlines describing the championship as returning “this week” are outdated. The broadcast window has already ended.

ESPN’s official schedule included both the Microsoft Excel World Championship Finals and an explicitly labeled Microsoft Excel World Championship 2024 Finals (re-air). A community schedule announcement reported the following Saturday listings:
- 6:30 a.m. ET: Microsoft Excel World Championship 2024 Finals, re-air
- 7:00 a.m. ET: Microsoft Excel World Championship 2025 Finals
Those times came from a community announcement rather than ESPN’s main press release, so they should be treated as historical schedule information—not a guarantee of current availability.

Do not assume that a listing inside ESPN’s live-stream interface means the competition is currently live. ESPN pages can use a general live or Watch interface for programs that are re-airs or on-demand videos. Replay rights can also differ by country, television provider, ESPN account and platform. What happens in an Excel esports match?
Players receive spreadsheet-based cases—business-style problems that require them to interpret information, build a working solution and produce correct results under time pressure. Their work can involve formula construction, modeling, calculation logic and error avoidance.
Microsoft’s coverage describes a competition with timed cases, live leaderboard movement and commentary focused on competitors’ spreadsheet decisions. The challenge is therefore not simply to finish first. Competitors also need to satisfy the case’s objectives, produce correct outputs, manage time and make efficient technical choices.
An illustrative, non-official example might look like this:
- Each competitor receives a workbook containing data and a problem to solve.
- They build formulas or a model that produces the required outputs.
- Points may depend on correct objectives, speed, bonus tasks or other rules.
- Submissions are evaluated and the leaderboard changes as results come in.
The exact time limits, scoring formula, permitted features and round structure can change between editions. They should not be inferred from the 2026 broadcast without the current official rulebook.
Why is Excel considered an esport?
The organizers and Microsoft describe the activity as Excel esports because it has the characteristics of a structured digital competition:

It is still different from a traditional multiplayer videogame. The core skill is spreadsheet problem solving rather than combat, racing or controlling an in-game character. “Esport” is a descriptive label used by the event’s organizers and coverage; it does not mean every sports organization classifies Excel competition identically.
Why ESPN8: The Ocho carries it
ESPN8: The Ocho is ESPN’s annual showcase for unconventional and niche competitions. Excel fits that format because it turns a familiar workplace tool into a highly watchable test of speed, accuracy and technical judgment.
The 2026 Ocho edition marked its 10th anniversary and included a wide range of programming. The Excel championship was one part of that package, not a permanent ESPN league or necessarily a single continuous live broadcast.
Microsoft is central to the event’s branding and Excel community coverage. Microsoft Community and MVP articles have featured competitors, commentators and case designers connected with the championship. That coverage does not by itself establish that Microsoft operates every part of the tournament or that ESPN owns the competition.
Who are the competitors?
Top competitors may include spreadsheet specialists, analysts, financial modelers, educators and dedicated tournament players. However, the available 2026 material does not establish a complete competitor roster or official World Championship standings.

One related result received attention in 2026: ASUS reported that Diarmuid Early won the inaugural Excel Landmark Battle in July, defeating Andrew Ngai by 40 points. The Landmark Battle was a separate event from the ESPN-broadcast Microsoft Excel World Championship, so that result should not be treated as the World Championship result.

The most interesting part of an Excel match is often the gap between a technically correct solution and an efficient one. A competitor may need to decide how to structure formulas, handle errors, interpret ambiguous data and prioritize objectives before the clock runs out.
General viewers do not need advanced Excel knowledge to follow the broad contest: contestants receive a problem, build a solution, and try to score more points than their rivals. Experienced Excel users may also recognize techniques involving lookup logic, dynamic arrays, model design and time management, although the specific tools allowed depend on the official rules.

Do you need Excel to watch?
No. Watching requires access to the relevant ESPN broadcast or replay, not an Excel subscription. Excel is useful only if you want to practice the underlying skills or build your own spreadsheet models.
Microsoft’s official Excel product page is the appropriate place to check current desktop, web and Microsoft 365 access options. A paid subscription is not necessary merely to watch a broadcast, and ESPN access requirements should be checked on the specific listing rather than assumed.
