The Midnight Walk on Switch 2: Graphics and Accessibility Settings to Change First

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Start in the Options menu before entering the first long chapter. Check display, subtitles, audio, controls and accessibility, then make small changes in a shadow-heavy scene. The Midnight Walk is built around darkness, strong lighting and stop-motion clay imagery, so the best setup is the one that keeps details and dialogue readable without washing out the intended contrast.

Nintendo lists the Switch 2 digital edition at 14.7 GB, released March 26, 2026, by Fast Travel Games. It supports TV, tabletop and handheld play, which makes a second settings check worthwhile whenever you change modes.

What to change before you start

Open Options from the title screen or pause menu before beginning the first extended chapter. Look through every available tab rather than assuming the defaults suit your screen, distance from the display or sensitivity to visual effects. The useful order is display first, subtitles second, then audio, controls and accessibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Display: find the image or brightness control, if the current build exposes one.
  2. Subtitles: check text size, speaker identification, background and contrast options.
  3. Audio: set the balance between effects, voices and music, and confirm whether surround output fits your setup.
  4. Controls: review stick sensitivity, inversion and vibration before the first stealth sequence.
  5. Accessibility: inspect any comfort, visual-intensity or input-assistance settings that are actually present in the installed build.

Nintendo’s public Switch 2 listing does not provide a complete menu map or default-value list. Therefore, an option should be treated as available only when you can see it in your current game version; names and defaults may differ between builds.

Why visibility matters in The Midnight Walk

The game presents a world made from real clay that was 3D-scanned and turned into stop-motion imagery. Its horror atmosphere depends on darkness, pools of light and abrupt visual contrast rather than on a permanently bright image. A scene that looks cinematic on a television can become hard to parse on a handheld screen, while excessive brightness can flatten the shadows that make threats and routes legible.

Visibility also affects play, not just atmosphere. Your lantern companion, Potboy, can distract fire-eating monsters with his flame while you hide and evade them. During those encounters you need to distinguish the character, the flame and nearby cover quickly. Subtitles matter for the same reason: missing a line can remove context while you are concentrating on movement and concealment.

Brightness: tune it for the screen you are using

Handheld and tabletop

Begin with the console at the brightness level you normally use, then adjust the game’s image setting in small increments if one is available. Check a scene containing deep shadow, a bright flame and a visible path or object. The target is not the brightest possible picture; it is an image in which dark shapes separate enough to read without turning every background into gray.

Ambient light changes the result. A handheld played near a window may need a different setting from the same device used in a dark room. Recheck after changing the console’s system brightness or moving from tabletop to handheld viewing distance.

Television play

Use the distance at which you normally sit, not a close-up inspection. Make one small change, watch a shadow-heavy scene, and stop when details are readable. If your television has its own black-level, HDR or picture presets, change only one layer at a time so you know whether the game or the display caused the difference.

Nintendo confirms TV, tabletop and handheld modes but does not publish mode-specific presets. Treat each mode as a separate calibration rather than expecting one value to look identical everywhere.

Subtitles and dialogue readability

Open the subtitle section before the first story conversation. If your Switch 2 build offers subtitle size, raise it until text is comfortable at your normal distance; do not wait until a chase or stealth section to discover that the default is too small. A background panel or stronger contrast can be more useful than making letters very large when the scene contains bright flames or moving shadows.

  • Size: choose the smallest setting you can read without leaning toward the screen, then increase one step if conversations are watched from farther away.
  • Speaker labels: enable them if several voices can be heard off-screen or during action.
  • Background or outline: use the option that keeps letters separate from clay textures and bright effects.
  • Placement: keep subtitles in the least obstructive position that remains easy to find.

Optional subtitle sizing has been documented for other versions of The Midnight Walk, but that does not establish feature parity on Switch 2. Verify the controls in the current Switch 2 build instead of assuming another platform’s menu is present.

Motion, film grain and visual-intensity controls

Some players prefer the full presentation; others read the scene more clearly with extra motion or texture removed. Inspect the current build for controls labeled with terms such as film grain, motion blur, camera shake or reduced flashes. These names and their availability are build-dependent because Nintendo’s public listing does not document a complete graphics or accessibility menu.

When to reduce effects

  • Disable film grain if the moving texture makes small silhouettes or subtitle edges harder to distinguish.
  • Reduce motion blur if turning the camera causes objects or text to smear.
  • Lower camera shake if movement makes it difficult to keep the path, Potboy or a hiding place in view.
  • Use a reduced-flash setting, if offered, when bright changes in lighting are uncomfortable.

When to keep the cinematic presentation

Leave an effect enabled when it does not interfere with reading or comfort and you want the clay stop-motion look as presented. Change one setting at a time, then revisit the same scene so you can tell which adjustment helped. There is no published Switch 2 performance-mode specification to guarantee a particular frame-rate or resolution option, so do not expect a graphics preset unless the installed menu explicitly provides one.

Recommended profiles by play mode

These are practical starting points, not claims that every control exists in every build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation First adjustment What to check Trade-off
Handheld in a bright room Make a small brightness increase if shadows merge Can you separate the route, Potboy’s flame and nearby cover? Too much brightness weakens intended contrast
Handheld in a dark room Keep brightness near the normal console level Are dark scenes readable without looking gray? A brighter image may feel harsher at close range
TV from a sofa Increase subtitle size or contrast if offered Can you read dialogue without leaning forward? Larger text is more prominent on screen
Motion-sensitive player Reduce camera shake, motion blur or flashes if those controls appear Does camera movement remain comfortable during evasion? Lower visual intensity can reduce the intended spectacle
Surround-sound setup Confirm surround output and voice volume Can dialogue be followed over effects? Directional effects may feel more prominent
Subtitle-led setup Use readable subtitle size and background, with a balanced effects mix Can text and spoken lines be followed during hiding sections? A quieter mix may reduce environmental impact

Audio: make voices and warnings easy to follow

Nintendo lists surround-sound support. If you use a surround system or compatible headphones, confirm that voices remain clear after enabling the output. If dialogue is difficult to hear, lower effects or music before raising the master volume. A subtitle-led mix is useful when environmental noise, room acoustics or listening fatigue make speech less distinct.

Check the result in an active scene rather than only in a quiet menu. Potboy’s flame, monster sounds and movement cues can compete with dialogue, and the balance that works in handheld mode may not suit a television and speakers. Recheck after switching between TV, tabletop and handheld play.

Controls and comfort checks

The public listing confirms one-player play on one system but does not publish a complete control map or an accessibility remapping list. Use the live Options menu to confirm the controls available to you.

  • Stick sensitivity: choose a level that lets you turn deliberately without overcorrecting near hiding places.
  • Inversion: set vertical or horizontal camera behavior to your established preference before an encounter requires precise movement.
  • Vibration: leave it on for tactile feedback, or reduce or disable it if repeated rumble is distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Input assistance: enable any clearly documented hold, toggle or remapping option only after checking what action it changes.

After changing a control, test it in a safe area. A setting that feels comfortable while looking around can still be awkward when you need to hide quickly and keep Potboy’s distraction in view.

Handheld, tabletop and TV: a repeatable recheck

Because all three modes are supported, use this short routine whenever you move the game:

  1. Load a familiar, shadow-heavy scene rather than calibrating in a bright menu.
  2. Check whether the route, character silhouettes and Potboy’s flame remain distinct.
  3. Read several subtitle lines from your normal viewing distance.
  4. Listen for voices over effects and confirm that the chosen audio output matches your speakers or headphones.
  5. Only then decide whether brightness, subtitle presentation or visual effects need another small change.

Do not copy a television setup directly to handheld. Screen size, viewing distance, ambient light and speaker placement all change what “readable” means.

Safety warning for flashing lights and patterns

Nintendo’s listing carries a warning for people with epilepsy or unusual reactions to flashing lights or patterns. Nintendo advises consulting a doctor and directs all users to the Health and Safety Information in the Switch 2 system settings. If a visual effect causes discomfort, stop playing rather than trying to tolerate it; look for a reduced-flash or visual-intensity option in the game if the current build provides one, and follow the system safety guidance.

Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 review, published April 4, 2026, describes the release as a strongly atmospheric stop-motion horror adventure and notes handheld, undocked play. That atmosphere is why a careful balance between visibility and contrast is more useful than simply making the image as bright as possible.

Quick troubleshooting

Dark areas still look like a single black shape

Check the game’s brightness in small steps, then check the television or console display setting separately. Revisit a shadow-heavy scene after each change and stop when objects separate without turning the whole image gray.

Subtitles disappear into the scenery

Increase size, contrast or background strength if those controls are exposed. If they are not, use the clearest display mode available and adjust the audio mix so dialogue is easier to follow.

Camera movement feels uncomfortable

Inspect the current build for motion blur, camera shake or reduced-flash controls. Disable or reduce one effect at a time, then test during normal movement and an evasion sequence.

Dialogue is hard to hear through speakers

Confirm the selected output, test surround support only if your equipment can reproduce it correctly, and lower effects or music before increasing overall volume. Recheck after changing play mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A setting mentioned for another platform is missing

Do not assume a missing control is hidden under a different name. Nintendo’s public Switch 2 listing does not enumerate every menu item, and options documented for other versions do not prove Switch 2 parity. Use only controls visible in your installed build or confirmed in an official Fast Travel Games update.

Bottom line

Change brightness, subtitle readability and audio clarity first, then review motion and comfort controls before the first long chapter. Calibrate separately for handheld, tabletop and TV, keep Potboy’s flame and nearby hiding spaces readable, and follow Nintendo’s flashing-light safety guidance. The Switch 2 edition’s 14.7 GB clay stop-motion presentation is designed to be atmospheric; the goal is to make that atmosphere legible and comfortable, not to erase its shadows.
