The Mortuary Assistant has six classic outcomes from its original release, plus a later secret route added in the June 28, 2023 update. Your ending depends on whether you identify the demon correctly, build the right sigil mark, burn the possessed corpse, and complete optional exploration before the final retort sequence.
The first two successful shifts are separate progression outcomes, while the remaining routes are failures, basement discoveries, or personal-history events. Platform and edition menus may count them differently, especially after the Definitive Edition expanded the game.

How many endings does The Mortuary Assistant have?
The safest way to count the endings is six original routes and one post-2023 secret route. Gameranx and Twinfinite described six endings in 2022. The developer’s June 28, 2023 Steam patch notes then stated: “A new ending has been added to the game.” Guides commonly call that later outcome the Secret Ending or House of Delver route; those are descriptive guide labels, not confirmed official in-game titles.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Some achievement lists and platform guides still discuss the six-ending structure because the achievement called The Mortician is associated with the six original endings. The July 2024 Definitive Edition announcement also matters: it added more haunt events, lore, bodies, an embalming-only mode, and console releases for PlayStation and Xbox alongside PC and Switch. Consequently, an edition’s menu, achievement list, or guide may display a different total even when it is describing the same core routes.

The normal shift: what every successful route requires
All successful endings use the same basic loop. Rebecca Owens works a night shift at River Fields Mortuary under Raymond Delver. She must perform ordinary embalming work while determining which cadaver is possessed. The haunting continues across shifts, so finishing one shift does not simply end the story; it unlocks further progression and new events.
1. Identify the possessed body
Use the letting strips and the Night Shift database to test the bodies. The strips provide the observable reactions, while the database lets you match those signs to a demon. Do not choose a corpse because of a single unusual detail. Compare the available evidence and confirm which body is possessed before committing to the ritual.
2. Build the demon’s mark
Collect the four sigils that belong to the identified demon and assemble them into the matching mark. A mark made from the wrong symbols, or a mark left incomplete, does not count as a valid banishment.
3. Apply the mark and finish embalming
Place the completed mark on the possessed body and complete the embalming procedure. The Baleful Reagent is essential to the ritual. Omitting it can turn an otherwise correct body choice into an unsuccessful outcome.
4. Burn the marked body
Put the marked, fully prepared body into the retort and burn it. The body, mark, ingredients and timing all have to agree. Burning a different corpse, burning before the procedure is complete, or using a missing or incorrect mark produces a failure route rather than a successful progression ending.
Ending 1: first successful shift (“I Survived” progression)
The first time you correctly identify the demon, construct its four-sigil mark, complete embalming with Baleful Reagent and burn the marked body, you receive the first successful-shift outcome. Walkthrough King associates this result with the “I Survived” progression.
This is not a shortcut to the final conclusion. Raymond explains that the haunting will continue unless Rebecca keeps working at the mortuary. The first success therefore establishes the central loop: Rebecca survives one shift, but another shift is required to uncover more of the story.

Unlock checklist
- Use letting strips and the Night Shift database to identify the demon.
- Assemble all four matching sigils into the correct mark.
- Apply the mark to the possessed body.
- Complete embalming with Baleful Reagent.
- Burn that same prepared body in the retort.
Ending 2: second successful shift (Standard or Good)
After the first successful shift, accept another shift and repeat the complete identification, marking, embalming and burning process without failing. Guides often call this the Standard or Good ending because it advances Rebecca’s relationship with Raymond and the ongoing loop.
The important distinction is progression, not a different ritual. The second success is counted separately because it occurs after the first successful shift and moves the narrative forward. Optional basement or personal-history events are not required for this route.
Ending 3: Incorrect Body or unsuccessful shift
The Incorrect Body outcome occurs when the ritual is attempted on the wrong corpse or is otherwise invalid. Typical triggers include burning the wrong body, using the wrong mark, leaving the mark missing, or omitting Baleful Reagent.
This route is different from full possession. Rebecca may complete enough of the shift to reach a bad result, but the demon has not been correctly bound and burned. If you are trying to progress, restart the identification process rather than assuming the body that reacted first is automatically the target.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Common causes
- The demon was matched from incomplete letting-strip evidence.
- One of the four sigils in the mark belongs to another demon.
- The mark was never placed on the selected corpse.
- Baleful Reagent was skipped during embalming.
- A body was burned before all required preparation was complete.
Ending 4: Game Over or Possession
The Game Over/Possession route is the death-style outcome. It can occur when the demon fully possesses Rebecca, when the shift timer runs out, when a body is burned prematurely, or when other failures allow the shift to collapse.
Unlike the Incorrect Body result, this route ends the run outright. Guides treat it as a restart-from-the-menu outcome, so any optional items or basement progress from that attempt must be pursued again.
Ending 5: Basement or Six Feet Under
The Basement route is an optional exploration sequence hidden inside a shift. You must investigate the cold-storage event, solve the stone-figure and keypad sequence, speak with Vallery, and then finish the shift correctly. Entering the basement alone is not enough; the final successful burn is still required.

Step 1: Enter the cold-storage basement event
During a shift, go into cold storage when the basement event becomes available. The route begins with a set of numbered stone figures. Open the figures in the required sequence to obtain the key that starts the next part of the puzzle.
Step 2: Use the keypad code
Use the keypad and enter 197044. Walkthrough King identifies this as the code that provides the hatch key. Keep the hatch key and continue searching rather than returning upstairs immediately.
Step 3: Find the large old key and Vallery’s room
Locate the large old key, leave the basement area, and go outside to the basement doors. Use the key to unlock Vallery’s room, then speak with Vallery. Her conversation is the story payoff for this route, but it does not replace the ritual requirement.
Step 4: Finish the shift correctly
Return upstairs, identify the possessed body, build the correct mark, complete embalming with Baleful Reagent and burn the marked body. The Basement/Six Feet Under outcome is awarded only when the optional sequence and the successful shift are both completed.
Ending 6: Closure or Sobriety
Closure, also called Sobriety in guides, connects the mortuary haunting to Rebecca’s personal history. It requires optional items and a random apparition trigger, so it may take several shifts even when your normal rituals are successful.
Collect the required items
- Find two sobriety coins in Rebecca’s apartment and the mortuary.
- Collect the necklace associated with the event.
- Keep the items available while continuing normal shifts; the apparition does not necessarily occur on the first attempt.
Respond to the apparition
When the relevant hanging or father hallucination appears, interact with the apparition using the item that matches what you see. Place the two coins in the open hands, or place the necklace on the father figure. The trigger is random, so missing the event is not evidence that the items were collected incorrectly; continue with additional shifts.
Complete the banishment
After resolving the apparition, perform the normal successful ritual: identify the demon, assemble its four-sigil mark, apply it to the correct body, use Baleful Reagent, and burn that body. The personal-history interaction and the correct final burn together produce Closure.

Ending 7: Secret or House of Delver route
The Secret/House of Delver route is the additional ending introduced by the June 28, 2023 update. It builds on the basement sequence rather than replacing it.
Step 1: Complete the basement investigation
Follow the Basement route far enough to reach Vallery’s coffin. Take Vallery’s mark from the coffin. This is a distinct mark for the later route, so do not confuse it with the four-sigil mark used to identify and bind the night’s demon.

Step 2: Burn the correct body with Vallery’s mark
Identify the night’s possessed body normally, then use Vallery’s mark as directed by the route and burn the correct body in the retort. The body still has to be the correct target; Vallery’s mark does not make a wrong-body burn safe.
Step 3: Return to the basement after the retort sequence
When the retort sequence ends, go back to the basement. Use the hammer on the locked door, collect the bolt cutters, and free Vallery. Completing the rescue is what distinguishes this post-update route from the original Basement ending.
Because “Secret Ending” and “House of Delver” are guide names rather than confirmed official titles, a platform may list the outcome differently. The route itself is the 2023-added content described by the developer’s patch note.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why you received the wrong-body ending
The game tests several decisions at once, so a wrong-body result does not always mean the corpse selection alone was wrong. Check the entire chain before trying again.
- Evidence: Recheck every letting-strip result against the Night Shift database.
- Sigils: Verify all four symbols belong to the identified demon and that the mark is complete.
- Placement: Confirm the mark is on the body you intend to burn.
- Embalming: Make sure Baleful Reagent was used and the ordinary embalming steps are finished.
- Retort timing: Do not burn a body prematurely or switch bodies after applying the mark.
- Optional route: Basement and Closure events require their own items and interactions before the final correct burn.
If the run instead ends in possession or a death-style scene, the shift collapsed rather than merely producing the Incorrect Body result. Restart and preserve enough time to complete identification and preparation before the demon overwhelms Rebecca.

Which ending should you pursue first?
- Learn the core loop with the first successful shift. Ignore optional rooms until you can reliably identify, mark, embalm and burn the right body.
- Complete a second successful shift. This unlocks the separate Standard/Good progression outcome.
- Attempt the Basement route. The code
197044, Vallery’s room and the final correct burn are the key checkpoints. - Watch for Closure events. Keep the coins and necklace, then respond to the random apparition when it appears.
- Return for the 2023 secret route. Use Vallery’s mark, then the hammer and bolt cutters after the retort sequence.
This order minimizes confusion because the optional endings all assume you already understand the ordinary ritual. If you pursue a special event before you can finish a clean shift, a possession or incorrect-body result can erase the run before the optional scene pays off.
Version and platform notes
Older six-ending guides remain useful for the original routes, but they predate the developer’s June 28, 2023 addition. The Definitive Edition announcement in July 2024 further complicates one universal count by adding haunt events, lore, bodies and an embalming-only mode while bringing the game to PlayStation and Xbox in addition to PC and Switch.
When a guide, trophy list or menu reports six endings, it is usually referring to the original structure and the achievement coverage associated with The Mortician. When it reports seven, it is including the post-2023 Secret/House of Delver route. Check your edition’s update history and achievement names before assuming an unlisted outcome is missing.
Quick route checklist
- First success: correct demon, four matching sigils, Baleful Reagent, correct body burned.
- Second success: repeat the complete ritual on a later shift.
- Incorrect Body: wrong corpse, wrong or missing mark, missing reagent, or another invalid ritual.
- Possession: demon overwhelms Rebecca, time expires, or the shift collapses.
- Basement: stone figures, hatch key from
197044, large old key, Vallery’s room, then a successful shift. - Closure: two sobriety coins and necklace, correct response to the random apparition, then a successful shift.
- Secret: Vallery’s mark, correct body burned, hammer on the locked basement door, bolt cutters, and Vallery freed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is “House of Delver” an official ending name?
No official title is confirmed in the available patch wording. “Secret Ending” and “House of Delver” are descriptive names used by guides for the ending added in the 2023 update.
What does code 197044 open?
Entering 197044 on the basement keypad provides the hatch key needed to continue the Basement/Six Feet Under sequence.
Does the Closure event happen every time?
No. The hanging or father hallucination trigger is random, so you may need several shifts after collecting the coins and necklace.
