Historical pricing conventions are not perfectly uniform: some sources report an announced MSRP, while others cite a retail or package price, and launch configurations can differ. Treat these as reported U.S. launch prices, not a definitive manufacturer-verified census.
| Rank | Console and launch configuration | U.S. launch year | Reported nominal launch price | Estimated value in June 2026 dollars |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Panasonic 3DO Interactive Multiplayer | 1993 | $699.99 | About $1,618 |
| 2 | SNK Neo Geo AES | 1991 | $649.99 | About $1,594 |
| 3 | Sony PlayStation 3, 60GB model | 2006 | $599.99 | About $994 |
| 4 | Atari 5200 | 1982 | $269.95 | About $934 |
| 5 | Mattel Intellivision | 1980 | $299 | About $1,212 |
| 6 | Atari 2600 | 1977 | $199 | About $1,097 |
| 7 | Sega Saturn | 1995 | $399 | About $874 |
The table’s rank is based only on nominal dollars, so the Intellivision, Atari 2600, and Saturn appear below the Atari 5200 despite their higher estimated inflation-adjusted values. The present-day figures are estimates rounded to the nearest dollar, calculated using U.S. city-average CPI-U through June 2026; they are not official console prices. How much did the Neo Geo and 3DO cost when they launched?
Panasonic 3DO: $699.99 in 1993
The 3DO’s reported U.S. launch price was $699.99, the highest nominal figure in this comparison. Its estimated equivalent is about $1,618 in June 2026 dollars, using the CPI-U method and reference month described above.
SNK Neo Geo AES: $649.99 in 1991
The Neo Geo AES reportedly launched in the United States at $649.99. Its estimated June 2026 equivalent is about $1,594. Ars Technica’s 2020 historical analysis also singled out the roughly $650 Neo Geo and $700 3DO as the only consoles at that time to launch above $500; that is a statement about its historical comparison, not a guarantee about every console release since then. Why the PS3 price depends on the model
The $599.99 entry is specifically the PlayStation 3 60GB configuration, not a universal launch price for every PS3 model. Its estimated June 2026 equivalent is about $994. Comparisons that omit storage or configuration can make different systems look directly comparable when they are not.

Nominal launch price versus inflation-adjusted cost
A nominal ranking answers which system had the highest sticker-price figure in its own launch-era dollars. An inflation-adjusted comparison asks how that amount translates into purchasing power at a chosen later date. Those are different rankings: for example, the cited June 2026 estimates put the 1980 Intellivision at about $1,212 and the 1977 Atari 2600 at about $1,097, both above the PS3’s estimated $994, even though their original prices were lower.

The conversion date matters. These estimates use June 2026 U.S. city-average CPI-U, with BLS CPI data identified as the inflation source by the compilation; they should not be compared as if they were the same as an estimate calculated for 2020 or another month. What this ranking does—and does not—compare
- Geography: U.S. launch-price reports only. Prices and bundles in other countries are not interchangeable.
- Price basis: Reported launch-era figures, with inconsistent source conventions around MSRP, retail price, and package price. The figures are not uniformly verified against manufacturer announcements.
- Coverage: A set of documented high-price candidates, not an exhaustive all-time ranking. Other compilations use base-model prices and different scope rules, so their rosters may differ. (Reference comparison and price-scope notes.)
- Resale market: Current collector listings are excluded. Asking prices vary with condition, completeness, included games, and region, and do not establish what a console cost at launch.
