Microsoft calls its next-generation first-party console Project Helix. The company says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games and powered by a custom AMD SoC. That makes “PC-hybrid” a fair shorthand for its stated games target—but not proof that Helix is a Windows PC, supports every PC storefront or runs every Windows application. The chip name “Magnus,” detailed specifications, retail price and consumer release date have not been confirmed in Microsoft’s announcement.
What is the next Xbox called?
Microsoft’s March 11, 2026 announcement identifies the project as Project Helix. Jason Ronald, Xbox vice president of next generation, described it as a first-party console in development and said it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games.
Project Helix is the official project name, not a confirmed retail product name. Microsoft said it expected to share more later in 2026, but the announcement did not give a consumer launch date, price or final retail name.
Will Project Helix play PC games?
Microsoft’s stated target is to play both Xbox console and PC games. That supports describing Helix as a console-and-PC hybrid at a high level, but the announcement does not explain how PC games will work in practice.

Microsoft has not specified Helix’s operating-system architecture, which PC storefronts it will support, whether it will run Windows applications generally, or whether it will use a particular dual-boot arrangement. Those details matter: “plays PC games” is not the same as a promise to behave like a retail Windows gaming PC or support every PC game.
The broader strategy is to make play more consistent across screens. In a separate Windows Experience Blog post, Microsoft said Xbox mode for Windows 11 was to begin rolling out in select markets in April 2026. It described Xbox mode as a full-screen, controller-optimized experience that retains Windows’ openness. That is Windows context, not a specification for Helix’s system software.

What is the AMD Magnus APU?
The confirmed hardware detail is that Project Helix uses a custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC), co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. Microsoft’s announcement does not call the chip “Magnus.” Treat Magnus as an unverified reported codename, not an official processor name or a published consumer specification.
Microsoft has not disclosed Helix’s CPU or GPU architecture, core counts, clock speeds, memory configuration, die layout, power draw or retail performance. Microsoft Game Dev’s same-day GDC summary corroborates the project’s console-and-PC intent but does not add hardware specifications.

What Microsoft says about ray tracing
Microsoft says Helix is intended to deliver “an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.” This is the company’s stated claim, not a published benchmark: the announcement provides no comparison system, test method or measured results. It therefore does not establish a particular frame rate, graphics-card equivalent or independently verified performance level.
When is the next Xbox coming out?
Microsoft said it plans to ship alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. An alpha is early development hardware for developers; that date is not a consumer release window. The March 2026 announcement gives no retail launch date or price.

Microsoft’s statement that it expected to share more later in 2026 is a promise of further information, not a dated launch commitment. Until it publishes a retail schedule, any specific consumer release year is unconfirmed by this announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will Xbox games work on Project Helix?
Microsoft says it is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come. That is a meaningful platform commitment, but the announcement does not include a Project Helix title-by-title compatibility list or specify exclusions, licensing conditions or the technical method. It does not establish that every game from every generation will work on Helix.

A separate backward-compatibility preview for PC
In a separate July 22, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement, Microsoft introduced an early-release Xbox backward-compatibility feature on PC and supported handhelds. Its starting catalog comprised four original Xbox games:
- Blinx: The Time Sweeper
- Conker: Live and Reloaded
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
- Fuzion Frenzy
Microsoft said these games were available to purchase on PC and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans. For these titles, an existing digital console license carried over to PC or handheld. The post describes access through the Xbox on PC app and lists Windows 11 requirements.
This PC preview is evidence of separate cross-device preservation work; it is not the Project Helix compatibility list or confirmation of how Helix will handle those or other games.
PC preview system requirements—not Helix specifications
The following requirements apply to the PC backward-compatibility feature announced in July 2026. They are not Project Helix hardware specifications.
