Hollow Knight: Silksong released on September 4, 2025, so the wait is over. But the years of anticipation became an internet event in their own right: a successful cult-favorite original, a sequel that grew beyond its original expansion plan, and a fan community that turned every uncertain stretch into another occasion to hope for news.
What is Silksong?
Hollow Knight: Silksong is Team Cherry’s sequel to Hollow Knight. It stars Hornet in Pharloom, a new kingdom to explore. The game’s Steam description highlights exploration, combat, quests, tools, enemies and bosses, alongside a score by Christopher Larkin. Team Cherry’s game page lists PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; Team Cherry also said the game launched day one on Xbox Game Pass. Why did anticipation grow so large?
The first game gave the sequel a devoted audience
The wait began with an advantage few indie sequels have: an original game that had already become a cult favorite. In its September 4, 2025 account, Le Monde reported that Hollow Knight had sold 15 million copies. That is a historical figure reported by the newspaper, not a current total or a figure published by Team Cherry or Valve. For fans who had spent years exploring the original, a return to its world was already a major event.

A planned expansion became a standalone sequel
According to Le Monde, Silksong was first announced as an expansion before becoming a standalone game as the original’s success grew. That shift mattered to expectations: fans were no longer waiting simply for an add-on, but for a full follow-up with its own setting and scope. It is one part of the story, not a single proven explanation for the scale of the excitement.
The uncertain wait became something fans shared
Le Monde described Team Cherry’s communications as sporadic and reported that fans repeatedly looked for news at major console showcases. Delays and the lack of a release date extended that shared uncertainty. Fans discussed the game on Reddit and Discord, followed specialist YouTube channels, and replayed the original while waiting. The studio’s silence alone does not explain the phenomenon; the community’s participation gave the wait a life of its own.

There were visible signs that the hype had moved beyond online chatter
Le Monde reported that fans waited for hours to try the game at Gamescom and that some took time off work to play it. The newspaper also reported more than five million Steam wishlists at the time of its September 2025 article. That is a historical snapshot reported by Le Monde, not a current wishlist total or a statistic directly published by Valve or Team Cherry.
Cyrielle Maurice, a specialist in communications and marketing for independent studios and developers, told Le Monde: “Un jeu indépendant qui fait un effet Grand Theft Auto VI comme ça, je n’ai pas souvenir d’avoir déjà vu ça.” In translation: “I don’t recall seeing an independent game have a Grand Theft Auto VI-like effect like this.” The comparison captures how unusual the attention seemed for an independent game, rather than establishing that its audience or sales matched those of a major franchise.

Where can you play or buy it?
Team Cherry lists PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms. It also announced day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. Check the relevant platform store for current regional availability and subscription terms.

Can fans make videos or merchandise?
Team Cherry’s FAQ grants game owners and press a free license to use its games in original media, including reviews, gameplay videos and Let’s Plays, and says creators may monetize that content. Its separate fan-merchandise guidance is more limited: small batches or one-off original fan work are generally okay under its rules, but private businesses are not licensed to sell merchandise, official game and marketing art is restricted, sales on mass-distribution sites such as Redbubble are barred, and certain trademark uses are prohibited.
