The meme behind A Summer in Northeast China is the Chinese internet saga commonly called “Once Upon a Time in Dongbei” (东北往事 or 东百往事). It grew from a 2016 Kuaishou feud between livestream personalities known as Brother Hu and Captain Shamate, then became a remixable canon on Bilibili. In 2023, creator Zhuangbuchun transformed that archive of performances, slang and callbacks into a free Steam visual novel.
What “Once Upon a Time in Dongbei” refers to
“Once Upon a Time in Dongbei” is an English rendering of a Chinese meme tradition usually written as 东北往事 or, in fan shorthand, 东百往事. It is not the title of one original film, show or game. The phrase describes a body of remembered livestream clips, quotations, edits and character associations that Chinese internet users treat as a shared set of classics.

The material emerged in 2016 from confrontations involving two Northeast Chinese livestreamers: Brother Hu and Captain Shamate. Their videos were loud, theatrical and full of bravado, regional slang and exaggerated threats. Viewers clipped the exchanges, repeated their lines and turned individual moments into reusable jokes. Over time, the names became shorthand for an entire style of Northeast internet performance rather than only for the people seen in the first videos.

It is a performance archive, not a verified biography
Sixth Tone reported that the feud was widely believed to be staged or scripted, possibly a collaboration designed for dramatic effect. That qualification changes how the story should be read. The safest description is a piece of internet performance and participatory meme culture, not a factual chronicle of an ongoing personal conflict. Claims about the participants’ private lives or the literal truth of every confrontation go beyond what the established account supports.

How the meme moved between platforms
Kuaishou supplied the raw performances
Kuaishou was the environment in which the original livestream personas and confrontations circulated. Short, emphatic clips worked well there: a distinctive accent, a sudden boast or an unusually theatrical exchange could be separated from its original stream and shared as a standalone moment.
Bilibili created a shared canon
Fans recorded and reposted the material to Bilibili, where editing, quoting and commentary gave the clips a second life. Users assembled compilations, added music and subtitles, and treated familiar lines as “classics.” This platform-to-platform movement matters because it explains why the meme outlasted any single stream. Kuaishou provided performances; Bilibili provided an archive that could be remixed and taught to newcomers.
Why Northeast speech was so recognizable
Northeasterners already occupied a prominent place in Chinese popular comedy, including through the sketches associated with Zhao Benshan. The regional dialect, rhythm, slang and direct style were therefore legible to a broad audience while still signaling a specific place. Kuaishou made those features easy to perform and replay; Bilibili made them easy to quote outside their original context.

Brother Hu and Captain Shamate are the two names most closely attached to the 2016 feud. In the meme’s later life, they function less as fully documented public biographies than as recognizable performance roles. Their appeal came from the contrast between forceful delivery, regional identity and the possibility that the spectacle was knowingly exaggerated.
“Shamate” also connects the saga to a wider Chinese online subculture associated with dramatic hairstyles, heavy styling and an intentionally conspicuous look. The label became one of the visual and cultural cues that later adaptations could reference. It should not be treated as a precise description of every person who used the style; in the game and in fan discussions it operates as an aesthetic signal.

What A Summer in Northeast China is
A Summer in Northeast China (东北之夏, DongBeiZhiXia) is a free Steam game released on January 9, 2023, by Zhuangbuchun Studio. It is presented as a gal game and visual novel rather than as a simulation of the original livestreams. The player follows Xiaoliang and encounters female characters loosely inspired by figures from the meme archive.
The game gives the meme a linear story
The source material consists of fragments: confrontations, catchphrases and edits that assume the audience already knows the joke. The game supplies a more conventional route through that material. Xiaoliang tries to recover memories with help from female companions, so the player receives character relationships and narrative progression instead of a sequence of disconnected clips.
That structure is an important part of the adaptation. A longtime fan can identify callbacks, names and visual traits, while a newcomer can follow the fictional plot without first watching years of livestream edits. The game does not reproduce the feud as a documentary; it uses the meme as a foundation for a new cast and story.
Original meme and game: the essential differences
| Aspect | Original meme tradition | A Summer in Northeast China |
|---|---|---|
| Primary platforms | Kuaishou livestreams, then Bilibili reposts and edits | Steam |
| Form | Short confrontational performances, clips and remixes | Linear gal-game/visual-novel narrative |
| Character treatment | Male livestream personas associated with Brother Hu and Captain Shamate | Fictionalized female characters inspired by the meme figures |
| Tone | Boastful, theatrical confrontation and quotable spectacle | Character-driven comedy, memory and relationship scenes |
| Cultural register | Northeastern dialect, slang and internet performance | Those regional cues combined with shamate, otaku and wider ACGN aesthetics |
The table describes a change of medium and purpose, not a claim that one version is more authentic. The game preserves recognizable signals while changing the audience’s route through them.
Why the game gender-swaps the source figures
The adaptation reimagines the male roles as women while retaining altered versions of names, signature visual traits and personalities. This is a deliberate translation into the conventions of a gal game, where the player encounters a set of character-focused relationships. Gender-swapping lets the creator keep the meme’s recognizable identities without presenting the original livestream personas as if they had simply walked into a fictional plot.

Because the characters are inspired rather than documentary copies, the game can rearrange motivations, soften or redirect confrontational behavior and build a memory-centered story around Xiaoliang. Fans are invited to recognize the reference and then accept the character as part of a new fictional system.

Northeastern dialect and humor
Speech is one of the adaptation’s strongest links to its source. Northeastern expressions and comic timing carry the sense of place that made the original clips distinctive. Translation can convey the plot, but some of the humor depends on cadence, slang and the social meaning of speaking in that regional register.
Shamate and visual exaggeration
The shamate reference supplies a bridge between Northeast internet history and deliberately heightened character design. Hair, styling and attitude become visual reminders of the meme’s online lineage rather than realistic attempts to recreate a livestream set.
Otaku culture and ACGN conventions
The game also draws on ACGN aesthetics: the broad Chinese term for animation, comics, games and novels. Character presentation, visual-novel pacing and the emphasis on memorable archetypes place the regional material inside a language familiar to otaku audiences. The result is not simply “Northeast culture in game form”; it is Northeast speech and humor filtered through a contemporary Chinese online subculture.
How Zhuangbuchun developed the project
Zhuangbuchun developed the game in public, financing it independently and receiving partial support through an Afdian crowdfunding campaign. Audience members commented on character designs, voice acting, accents and delays. The creator sometimes adjusted the project in response, making the production itself a continuation of the participatory culture that had sustained the meme.

The announcement became a major audience test
In April 2022, Zhuangbuchun’s Bilibili announcement video for the gender-swapped adaptation received more than 1.5 million views, 71,000 likes, 23,000 saves and 11,000 reposts. Those figures, reported by Sixth Tone from the creator’s announcement, show that the project had already reached a large audience before release. They measure attention to the announcement, not sales or the number of people who completed the game.
Feedback shaped expectations
Public development meant that fans did not encounter the game as an unexplained commercial product. They had followed design decisions and delays, debated how accents should sound and formed expectations about how faithfully the adaptation should treat familiar figures. That history helps explain why the finished work could operate simultaneously as a story for newcomers and as a dense set of references for people who knew the clips.
Launch reception and what the numbers mean
Sixth Tone reported more than 12,000 positive Steam reviews and an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating after launch. This is a time-stamped snapshot reported in 2026, not a permanent score: Steam review totals and rating percentages can change as new players post reviews. The figure indicates strong recorded reception, but it does not by itself identify which parts of the game—story, references, art, music or accessibility—individual players valued.

Start with the game’s fiction
You do not need a complete background in Brother Hu, Captain Shamate or Bilibili edit history to understand the basic premise. Treat Xiaoliang’s route and the relationships around her as the primary narrative. The visual novel is designed to give the references a fictional context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExpect allusions rather than a transcript
Recognizable names, traits and callbacks are clues to the source, not evidence that every scene reproduces a documented event. Some jokes will land more strongly if you know the original catchphrases; others work through character dynamics and regional humor alone.

Use the release information correctly
The documented version is a free digital release on Steam from January 9, 2023. Storefront availability, review totals and language information can change, so check the current Steam listing for the edition offered in your region rather than assuming that a later listing has identical details.
Why this adaptation matters
A Summer in Northeast China demonstrates how internet folklore can move through several cultural forms without remaining identical at any stage. A livestream confrontation becomes a clipped quote; the quote becomes a Bilibili “classic”; the classic becomes a character reference; and the reference becomes a playable narrative on Steam.
Each transfer changes what the audience does. Livestream viewers react in real time, Bilibili users preserve and remix, and visual-novel players proceed through scenes and relationships. The game therefore records not only a meme’s content but also its circulation history.
The project is also a case study in regional identity online. Northeast China is present in the accent, humor and implied social setting, while the game’s visual language belongs to a broader ACGN world. Rather than treating those as competing identities, the adaptation makes their combination its central style.
What the meme does—and does not—tell you about Northeast China
The meme’s exaggerated confrontations are useful evidence of how a regional performance style can become nationally recognizable, but they are not a neutral portrait of everyday Northeastern life. Loudness, bravado and comic conflict were selected because they were memorable and remixable. Reading the clips as representative sociology would mistake an entertainment format for a census.
The same caution applies to the game. Its female characters, visual jokes and reconstructed memories are creative interpretations. They preserve an online memory while changing its gender, genre and narrative stakes. Understanding that distance is the key to appreciating the adaptation: it is neither a literal retelling of the feud nor an unrelated original that merely borrows names.
The short version
The Northeast Chinese meme began with a 2016 Kuaishou feud associated with Brother Hu and Captain Shamate, was archived and remixed on Bilibili, and became known as 东北往事 or 东百往事. Because the feud was widely believed to be staged, it is best understood as performance culture. Zhuangbuchun’s free 2023 Steam visual novel A Summer in Northeast China carries that archive into a fictional, gender-swapped gal-game story, combining Northeastern speech and humor with shamate and ACGN aesthetics.
