Its creator, Cameron Redmore (Camzie99), disclosed using large language models to generate code. That is a meaningful part of the project’s story, but the available reporting does not establish what proportion of the final code was AI-generated or independently assess its quality.
What Crash Team Racing: Turbocharged is
Turbocharged is a PC port of the original PS1 kart racer, not a new official Crash game. The project identifies itself as a fork of High Octane, which builds on CTR Native and the CTR-tools decompilation work. CTR Native describes its own work as a native PC port based on the CTR-ModSDK decompilation project. Turbocharged therefore builds on community decompilation and porting work rather than starting from an unrelated recreation. Turbocharged project page · CTR Native README
The Turbocharged maintainers say the port preserves the original game logic, tracks and handling while adding a cleaned-up native 3D renderer, widescreen ratios, selectable frame-rate targets, and optional settings for a PS1-style presentation. These are project claims, not independent performance or fidelity test results. The project page lists build 07d0c49, dated 6 October 2026. Turbocharged project page
What the creator said about AI use
GamesRadar reports that Redmore confirmed using large language models to write code. In the creator’s account, he first planned features and identified likely code changes, then used an LLM to generate smaller pieces—such as a function or one file at a time—so he could review them. GamesRadar quotes him describing the process as “much more fine-grained and iterative.” GamesRadar+

- Race online with friends and Crash the competition with online leader boards
This supports saying that the creator disclosed using LLMs to generate code. It does not show how much of Turbocharged’s finished code was generated, independently verify the full development history, or establish whether the resulting code is better or worse than code written without AI. The disclosure is specific; broader claims about the whole port being “made by AI” go beyond what the reporting establishes.
How to play it on PC
Turbocharged says its download does not include game data. Its setup calls for a player’s own NTSC-U retail copy, dumped as a raw MODE2/2352 BIN image; the software imports the data it needs. CTR Native likewise says a cooked 2048-byte-per-sector ISO lacks sector data required for XA/STR audio and video. These are the projects’ stated requirements, not legal advice, and setup requirements may differ between forks. Turbocharged project page · CTR Native README

What changes from the PS1 experience
Turbocharged exposes separate options rather than forcing players into one all-or-nothing presentation. The project lists controls for renderer and visual treatment, frame-rate target, aspect ratio, gameplay, HUD and other interface choices, and controller bindings. It describes its PS1 preset as retaining 30 FPS and the original retail AI, engines and unlocks; its Turbocharged preset adds the native renderer and extended AI racers. Turbocharged project page
The project advertises frame-rate targets up to 240 FPS, but that is a capability claim for the build dated 6 October 2026, not a guarantee that every PC will reach that rate. The maintainers say high frame rates require a reasonably quick CPU and GPU. They also list possible issues with some GPU drivers in 32-bit builds under native Wayland, and say experimental 64-bit and ARM builds are untested. Turbocharged project page

How Turbocharged relates to CTR Native and Overdrive
CTR Native is the broader native-port project and community foundation in Turbocharged’s lineage; Turbocharged is a feature-rich fork of High Octane, itself based on CTR Native. Overdrive is a separate CTR Native edition, so its support and testing claims should not be assumed to apply to Turbocharged. Overdrive’s page describes Windows and SteamOS/Steam Deck support, modern controller and keyboard support, and a compatible user-provided NTSC-U disc image requirement. It says public v0.1.0 was tested on Windows and that its packaged SteamOS installer and game were verified on a physical Steam Deck. CTR Native: Overdrive project page
