The Outer Worlds 2 makes a persuasive case for being Obsidian’s strongest game since Fallout: New Vegas—but not an uncontested one. Its most convincing advances are richer role-playing options and more flexible combat. Whether those improvements outweigh a less compelling story, slower stretches, and review-era technical complaints depends on what you value most in a role-playing game.
What is The Outer Worlds 2?
Released on October 29, 2025, The Outer Worlds 2 is a single-player science-fiction RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios. Obsidian lists Windows, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Battle.net on its official game page. Xbox’s product page specifies Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 and presents Game Pass access; availability can vary by region and catalogue.
You play an Earth Directorate agent sent to Arcadia, a colony threatened by dangerous rifts and shaped by rival factions and corporate ambitions. The official premise puts choices about your character, crew, and allegiances at the center of the crisis. This is a setup, not a spoiler: the game’s appeal rests in how you build your agent and respond to the people and powers you encounter.
What makes the sequel feel like a step forward?
More ways to solve fights
The strongest point of agreement among reviewers is that combat offers more flexibility. GameSpot praises the range of approaches available to both the player and companions, while The Guardian likewise identifies combat as a meaningful improvement. That matters because a role-playing game’s combat system is most satisfying when character choices affect how encounters play out, rather than remaining confined to dialogue and menus.

Windows Central also reports that the game supports both first-person and third-person play. The option gives players a different way to view their character and the action, though it does not by itself settle whether the underlying combat will suit every player.
Role-playing choices have more room to breathe
GameSpot and The Guardian both point to deeper role-playing mechanics, and GameSpot highlights character development alongside the combat options. Combined with the premise’s focus on crew and faction choices, these systems give the sequel a stronger foundation for players who enjoy shaping a character’s approach to a situation—not just picking a weapon.

That breadth is the most defensible reason to call The Outer Worlds 2 a major Obsidian RPG. It is a case for a stronger toolkit, not proof that every part of the adventure is equally strong.
Where does the game lose momentum?
The story is less consistently convincing than the systems
Reviews do not agree that the expanded systems are matched by an equally satisfying story. The Guardian says the story fails to delight, while GameSpot praises the setting’s distinct identity but finds its satire about scientists weak. Those are critical judgments, not universal verdicts, but they point to a real distinction: liking Arcadia’s world and role-playing opportunities does not guarantee that its narrative or humor will land for you.

Travel and reading can slow the pace
GameSpot’s October 22, 2025 review reports travel friction and long loading times on Xbox Series X, including a lack of planet-to-planet fast travel. It also notes that reading-heavy terminals can interrupt forward momentum. These are observations from that review and platform, not a guarantee of how the game performs for every player or how it behaves after subsequent updates.
Difficulty and bugs depend on the review context
PC Gamer describes an uneven challenge, including a reverse difficulty curve, bugs, and sluggish melee, and identifies the hardware used for its review. Windows Central, which says its reviewer spent 40 hours with the game, calls it worthwhile while noting a few bugs; the outlet disclosed receiving a review code from Xbox Game Studios. These reports justify caution about balance and polish, but they describe reviewers’ experiences rather than establishing the game’s current state across platforms.

Is it really Obsidian’s best game since New Vegas?
That depends on what “best” means. The case is strongest if you prioritize build flexibility, combat, and role-playing depth: those are the areas where reviews most clearly identify progress. The case weakens if your ranking hinges on narrative impact, consistent pacing, or technical smoothness, where reviewers raise notable reservations.
A fair comparison should separate those dimensions instead of treating “best” as a measurable fact. The available reviews support calling this a confident, worthwhile sequel with a stronger identity and improved systems. They do not establish an objective ranking against Obsidian’s other games, including Fallout: New Vegas.

Should you play The Outer Worlds 2?
If you liked Fallout: New Vegas for character builds, consequential role-playing, and the freedom to approach encounters in different ways, The Outer Worlds 2 has a strong claim on your time. If you mainly want a consistently gripping story or an adventure with no pacing or technical rough edges, the reviews offer less reassurance. The most useful expectation is a systems-forward RPG whose combat and role-playing improvements are more widely praised than its story.
For launch context only, Xbox Wire announced a standard price of $69.99 USD in June 2025, and The Guardian reported a revised launch price of £60/$70 after a higher proposed amount was reversed. Those figures are historical launch pricing, not current retailer prices.
