How to Use YouTube Channel Memberships on a 24/7 Live Stream

Use memberships on a 24/7 YouTube stream by keeping the video public with members-only chat or by making a broadcast members-only. Plan for archive and DVR limits on streams longer than 12 hours.

You can use YouTube channel memberships with a 24/7 live stream in two different ways: keep the stream public and let only members chat, or make a separate broadcast available only to members. The first rewards participation without hiding the video; the second gives members exclusive viewing access. Before relying on a continuous stream as a replay, plan a local recording: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in the archive.

Choose how membership should change the stream

Format Who can watch? What members get Best fit
Public stream with members-only chat Everyone can watch; only members can post in live chat. Chat participation, alongside membership benefits such as badges and custom emoji. A continuous public channel where supporters want a way to take part without restricting the broadcast.
Members-only live stream Only members can watch. You can restrict access to selected membership levels where available. Exclusive viewing access to that broadcast. Separate programming or access intended specifically for members.

These are separate settings and promises to viewers. Members-only chat does not make the video private: nonmembers can still watch. With a members-only stream, nonmembers cannot watch, even if they can see its thumbnail and metadata. YouTube explains the chat option in its membership levels and perks guidance and the viewing restriction in its members-only live stream instructions.

Check membership availability and set up levels

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Earn → Memberships and check that memberships are available for your channel.
  2. Create membership levels and choose benefits you can deliver consistently. YouTube allows up to 6 levels, with 1 to 5 perks per level. Possible perks include badges, custom emoji, posts, members-first videos, members-only live chat, members-only streams, milestone chats, the recognition shelf, Shorts, and videos. Availability depends on YouTube’s current requirements, location availability, and policies.
  3. Submit new levels and perks for review. YouTube says review takes about a day; wait for approval before promising a new perk to members.
  4. Describe the benefit precisely. For example, say “members can chat on the public 24/7 stream” if viewers are not being given exclusive access to the video.

Use YouTube’s current instructions for creating or managing membership levels and perks to confirm the options shown in your Studio account.

Enable members-only chat on a public stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream.
  2. Open that stream’s settings and find the Live chat options.
  3. Enable members-only chat, then save.
  4. Tell viewers that the video remains public but chat is for members. This avoids implying that the entire broadcast is exclusive.

Members can use their membership badges and custom emoji in live chat. When someone joins during a live stream, YouTube displays a new-member message in chat and pins that member’s profile image for five minutes. Eligible members can send a milestone chat beginning with their second consecutive month; the highlighted message is visible to all viewers. See YouTube’s membership benefits guidance for details.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make a broadcast members-only

For an exclusive broadcast, create a separate stream or change the intended stream’s visibility to Members only. Where the option is available, choose which membership levels can access it. Check the stream’s visibility and access settings before sharing its link: unlike members-only chat, this setting restricts viewing itself. YouTube’s members-only live stream instructions cover the setup.

Use gifts without promising recurring access

Eligible viewers can gift channel memberships during a live stream or Premiere. Recipients must opt in to be eligible, and gifted access lasts up to one month and does not recur automatically. Explain that distinction if you mention gifts so viewers do not mistake a gifted membership for an ongoing paid subscription. See YouTube’s gift membership guidance.

Plan the 24/7 archive and rewind experience

Do not promise that YouTube will preserve a continuous 24-hour broadcast as one complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. Its separate DVR guidance warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Read YouTube’s live archive guidance and DVR guidance.

If you need an archive, decide how to record and store the broadcast locally before going live. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a universal way to split a 24/7 broadcast into shorter sessions or guarantee that a restart schedule will preserve continuity, membership access, or analytics. Verify any segmented workflow with your own channel and streaming setup rather than assuming a particular restart interval will solve the archive problem.

Start the broadcast with an encoder

YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. A dedicated device is optional; YouTube says creators do not need expensive equipment to get started and presents professional-grade hardware as an option for higher-production events.

  1. Create a stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder.
  3. Start the feed from the encoder and confirm it appears in Live Control Room before you rely on the broadcast.

Treat the stream key as sensitive access information. YouTube’s step-by-step instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; its live streaming tips discuss equipment options.
