The Outer Worlds 2 delivers a broad, choice-driven science-fiction RPG, with writing, worldbuilding and player decisions among its clearest strengths. Its combat and difficulty consistency are less convincing in at least one detailed review, leaving this sequel enjoyable for fans of role-playing and dialogue but short of an unqualified recommendation.
What kind of game is The Outer Worlds 2?
The Outer Worlds 2 is a single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, published by Xbox Game Studios. You play an Earth Directorate agent sent to investigate destructive rifts in Arcadia, a colony shaped by conflict among factions. Obsidian’s description puts character-building and decisions at the center: your strengths, flaws, crew and alliances can influence how events unfold. Steam’s listing and Xbox Wire’s launch announcement outline the premise.
That setup makes the sequel a natural fit for players who enjoy shaping a protagonist and navigating a world through dialogue and consequential choices. The available reviews most clearly support those strengths; they do not establish a comprehensive comparison with the first game across story, exploration, performance or accessibility.
How well do the writing and choices work?
Writing, story, worldbuilding and choice drew praise in some of the review excerpts gathered by Metacritic. Those excerpts are a selection, not a complete or unanimous critical verdict, but they point to the areas most likely to appeal to players who come to an RPG for its setting and role-playing possibilities. Metacritic’s review page also includes criticism, so the praise should be read as evidence of positive responses rather than consensus.

#1 Best Overall
GameSpot’s Steve Watts rated the game 8/10. That is one reviewer’s score, not a measure of all players’ experience. GameSpot’s review index identifies the review and rating.
What are the main gameplay drawbacks?
Combat feel
PC Gamer found the guns satisfying but described melee as imprecise and sluggish. That is the outlet’s assessment, not a universal result across every build, platform or player. If responsive melee is central to what you want from an action RPG, treat it as a meaningful caution. PC Gamer’s review discusses its combat impressions.

- The Outer Worlds 2 is the eagerly awaited sequel to the award-winning first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment.
- Get ready for an action-packed adventure with a new crew, new weapons, and new enemies in a new colony! So much newness!
- As a daring Earth Directorate, the entire galaxy, rests on your decisions—your strengths, your flaws, your crew, and the factions you choose to trust.
- Build your character with the abilities and choices that reflect your playstyle. The colony reacts to your every move, crafting a narrative that’s yours to own.
- Recruit companions with unique traits, backgrounds, and goals, making them an integral part of the immersive story you create together.
Difficulty consistency
PC Gamer also noted an uneven difficulty curve. This suggests that the challenge may not feel consistent from one stretch to another, though the review does not establish how every player will experience it. Together, these combat and balance concerns keep the RPG’s moment-to-moment action from matching the promise of its role-playing strengths as consistently as it might.
Is The Outer Worlds 2 better than the first game?
The available evidence does not support a definitive, across-the-board verdict that the sequel is better. A useful comparison depends on what you value: dialogue and story, the impact of choices and character builds, gunplay and melee, difficulty balance, exploration and pacing, or platform performance and accessibility. The cited material speaks most clearly to writing and choice on the positive side, and combat feel and difficulty on the cautionary side; it does not provide a full comparative benchmark against the first game.

Which edition or subscription should you choose?
Xbox Wire described the Premium Edition as including the base game, a pass for two future story expansions, a premium prize pack, and access to a digital artbook and soundtrack. Who should play The Outer Worlds 2?
- Consider it if you want a single-player sci-fi RPG built around character choices, dialogue and a distinctive faction-driven setting.
- Be more cautious if you prioritize precise melee combat or a consistently tuned difficulty curve; one detailed review specifically raised concerns in both areas.
- Compare it with the first game on your own priorities. The cited evidence highlights writing and choice, but does not establish that the sequel is categorically better across the full RPG experience.
The most defensible verdict is a qualified recommendation: The Outer Worlds 2 has strong role-playing and worldbuilding appeal, while reported combat and difficulty unevenness keep it from reaching its full potential. GameSpot’s 8/10 shows that at least one reviewer found it highly worthwhile, but the mixed review evidence leaves room for players to weigh those strengths and drawbacks differently.
