What the Xbox 360 Store Closure Meant for 220 Digital-Only Games

Microsoft ended new Xbox 360 Store purchases in July 2024. VGC’s estimate of around 220 digital-only games described lost access to that purchase route—not a universal end to playability or availability elsewhere.

Microsoft ended new purchases from the Xbox 360 Store and Xbox 360 Marketplace on July 29, 2024. Before the closure, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) estimated that about 220 digital-only Xbox 360 games would no longer be available to buy through that store. That was VGC’s 2023 estimate—not a Microsoft count—and it did not mean every affected game became unplayable or disappeared from every platform.

What closed on July 29, 2024?

Microsoft stopped sales of new games, downloadable content (DLC), and other entertainment content through both the Xbox 360 console store and the Xbox 360 Marketplace website. The cutoff has passed; these are no longer purchase routes for new content. Microsoft’s announcement is available on Xbox Wire.

The closure changed where some games could be bought, not a single universal rule for whether they could still be played. Access now depends on whether you already own the game, whether it is backward compatible, whether it had a disc or another release, and—if you want online multiplayer—whether its publisher still supports the servers.

What did VGC mean by “over 220” games?

In an analysis published August 17, 2023, VGC estimated that around 220 digital-only Xbox 360 games would effectively disappear from commerce when the store closed. VGC excluded backward-compatible titles and games already delisted at the time. Microsoft did not publish this figure, and it is not a current audited count of games unavailable across all platforms.

The estimate concerned the ability to buy those games again through the Xbox 360 store path. It did not establish that every game stopped working for existing owners, nor that no version could be found elsewhere. Some titles had releases on other systems or later-generation versions; VGC also noted that a small number of digital-only releases might be included in physical compilations. Its analysis is at Video Games Chronicle.

For context, VGC’s 2023 analysis said the North American Arcade section then listed 619 titles, while nearly 500 Games on Demand titles had physical releases. Those figures describe the storefront and catalog examined at that time, not present-day counts.

Can you still play Xbox 360 games after the store closure?

Yes. Microsoft says games and DLC bought before the cutoff remain playable and can be redownloaded. Mike Nelson, Xbox Wire Editor, wrote: “This change will not affect your ability to play Xbox 360 games or DLC you have already purchased.” That assurance concerns purchased content; it does not guarantee that online features will remain available.

How access differs by what you own

Situation What access means
You bought the game digitally before the closure Microsoft says you can continue to play and redownload purchased content on Xbox 360. If the title is backward compatible, you may also be able to play it on a newer Xbox console.
You did not buy it, but it is backward compatible Supported Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles remain available to purchase on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com, subject to title availability.
You have an Xbox 360 disc You can use it on Xbox 360. If the title is backward compatible, Xbox One and Series X|S download the game and require the disc in the drive to play. Xbox Series S supports digital games only.
It is digital-only, not backward compatible, and you did not buy it The Xbox 360 purchase route is closed. A different release or compilation may exist, but VGC’s historical list does not establish each game’s current availability.
You want online multiplayer Availability depends on whether the publisher continues to support that game’s servers.

Which Xbox 360 games still work on Xbox One and Series X|S?

Backward compatibility is title-specific. Microsoft says supported Xbox 360 games remain playable and purchasable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and its compatibility page provides the catalog and details: Xbox backward compatibility. Check the specific game rather than assuming that every Xbox 360 title works on a newer console.

For compatible digital games you already own, Microsoft says they appear in the newer console’s Ready to Install list. Compatible disc games download to the console, but you must keep the disc in the drive to play. Because Xbox Series S has no disc drive, it cannot use Xbox 360 discs.

What happened to Xbox 360 Movies & TV purchases?

The Movies & TV app on Xbox 360 stopped functioning after July 29, 2024. Microsoft said previously purchased content remained in the buyer’s library and could be viewed on supported Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S devices; eligible titles could also be accessed through Movies Anywhere. This was a separate effect from the closure of game and DLC purchases.

Will multiplayer still work?

The store closure itself did not guarantee continued online play. Microsoft’s FAQ says multiplayer and connections with friends continue only while the publisher supports the game’s servers. A game may therefore remain playable offline or through its disc while its online services are unavailable.
