Start with what you want to do most often. Choose a skill that supports your main combat approach, then add skills that improve access to the conversations, systems, and places you care about. Skills can serve both roles: Hack can help in technology-focused encounters and with terminal checks, while Observation can support exploration and precision damage.

Xbox Wire’s feature on Obsidian QA staff builds illustrates two different ways to specialize. Barbie, a ranged-damage character, is built by QA analyst Liz Ackerman around Sneak, Speech, and Lockpick, with additional Guns and Observation. Ackerman describes her preference this way: “I prefer rogue and assassin builds and enjoy manipulating the battlefield before the enemy even knows I’m there.”

A companion-centered build called Ham uses Leadership, Melee, and Speech. QA analyst Joshua Ledford explains: “I like this build because I can complete a lot of combats by getting enemy attention and then just standing there and holding block with my melee weapon while my companions kill things.” These examples show different priorities rather than a prescribed strongest build. Xbox Wire’s character-build feature attributes both builds and quotes to their speakers.
