The Outer Worlds 2 has received criticism for aspects of its story, combat and difficulty, while Obsidian’s patch notes confirm that specific bugs—including quest, audio, crash and save-related issues—were addressed. Those are different kinds of evidence: review criticisms are one critic’s judgments, and patch notes document fixes without showing how common a bug was or whether it affects the latest build.
What are the main criticisms of The Outer Worlds 2?
PC Gamer’s release-period review offers a useful set of criticisms, but they should be read as that reviewer’s assessment, not as a settled consensus. The review praised the game’s writing, quests, skill system and level design while finding several other elements less successful.
A less nuanced central conflict
The reviewer thought the game’s ideological conflict was presented in a more caricatured way than they wanted. Players looking for factions whose positions and motives feel complicated may find that treatment less satisfying; this is a matter of interpretation, not a technical defect.
Uneven difficulty and familiar combat
PC Gamer described the difficulty curve as uneven, with balance problems at different points in the campaign. The review also found the moment-to-moment combat familiar and less compelling than combat in some comparison games. These judgments may not match every player’s experience, but they identify likely pressure points for readers who prioritize consistent encounters or distinctive combat.

Less scale and reactivity than some RPGs
The reviewer felt the game did not reach the scale, simulation or reactivity that impressed them in titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Disco Elysium. That comparison describes one critic’s expectations and reference points; it does not establish a general ranking of the games.
Were there bugs, and what did Obsidian patch?
Yes, Obsidian’s patch announcements document bugs and fixes. Patch notes establish that the developer addressed particular problems; they do not indicate how many players encountered them, or prove that every issue is resolved in every later build.

Fixes documented in Patch 1.2.0.0
Obsidian said the update addressed numerous player-reported bugs. Examples include loud radio and loudspeaker audio during conversations, companion banter behavior, quest progression and reactivity, a Rift Lab crash after extended play attributed to an audio resource leak, a PS5 and PS5 Pro crash addressed through memory management, and Dependent Flaw bonus damage that persisted after saving and loading. The announcement also described the update as addressing “numerous bug fixes that you brought to our attention and much more!” Obsidian’s Patch 1.2.0.0 announcement.
Earlier patch notes and launch-period issues
Patch 1.1.0.0 also listed bug fixes and quality-of-life additions, including the ability to advance in-game time and new stealth takedown animations. Obsidian’s Patch 1.1.0.0 announcement.

Launch-period Hotfix 1.0.4.0 notes described a fall-through-world problem when loading a save made in certain tunnel or vent areas while crouching. They also said a Consumerism Flaw reward issue was not fixed in that hotfix and would be addressed later; that note is not evidence that the issue remains unfixed. Obsidian’s Hotfix 1.0.4.0 announcement.
One reviewer’s firsthand bug report
PC Gamer’s reviewer reported a companion getting stuck below the ship’s map during a quest and said they recovered by repeatedly loading saves. This illustrates how a bug affected one playthrough, but it does not establish how often it happened to other players. PC Gamer’s review.

Was The Outer Worlds 2’s PC performance a problem?
There is evidence of a specific, dated stuttering incident, not enough here to label PC performance universally poor or to describe the game’s current state across platforms. In a developer community post dated October 31, 2025, Obsidian said an issue introduced by Patch 1.0.4.1 caused hitching and stuttering for some PC players because shaders were not being properly compiled. Obsidian’s developer post about the Patch 1.0.4.1 issue.
The available patch documentation covers fixes through Patch 1.2.0.0; it does not establish that this is the newest build as of October 8, 2026. Check the current patch notes for your platform before treating any dated report as a description of the version you are playing.

What should you try if the game stutters, crashes or looks wrong on PC?
Obsidian’s support guidance offers troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes. Change one setting at a time where practical so you can tell what affects the problem.
For low frame rates or inconsistent performance
- Try a lower graphics preset, then adjust shadows, reflections, global illumination, foliage, view distance, effects, textures and crowd density to find a workable balance.
- Test a frame-rate cap and V-Sync settings based on your display and preference.
- Check that your PC meets the game’s system requirements and that your graphics drivers are current.
For crashes, stuttering, black screens or visual glitches
- Verify the game files using the relevant storefront’s repair or verification option.
- Clear the shader cache where appropriate, especially when troubleshooting a post-update graphics problem.
- Check for operating-system updates and signs of overheating. Obsidian’s guidance also flags possible CPU and graphics-feature issues.
For platform- and symptom-specific details, consult Obsidian’s performance troubleshooting guide and its crashing and performance support page. These steps do not prove a problem is caused by a player’s hardware; they are checks to help narrow down possible causes.
How to decide whether these flaws matter to you
The criticisms point to different priorities rather than one universal verdict. If you are deciding whether to play, consider which of these matter most to you:
- Story and factions: PC Gamer’s reviewer wanted more nuance in the central ideological conflict.
- Combat and challenge: That reviewer found combat familiar and the difficulty uneven.
- World reactivity: The review judged the game less expansive and reactive than some of its RPG comparisons.
- Technical stability: Obsidian documented specific fixes and a dated PC shader-compilation incident, but the evidence here cannot establish bug frequency or current stability on your platform.
For the first three, the available evidence is one reviewer’s evaluation rather than a broad survey. For the last, patch notes and support documentation are more useful than an isolated anecdote, but neither substitutes for checking the current build and platform you plan to use.
