The Outlast Trials is a cooperative PvE horror game you can also play alone. To get oriented, learn what kind of activity you’re entering, what each loadout system is for, and how to use the live Trial board: exact activities, unlocks, and balance can change with updates.

Trials, MK-Challenges, Programs, and Variators

Trials are the longer story activities

Red Barrels describes Trials as immersive, story-driven therapies. They form the longer activity format in the game.

MK-Challenges are shorter activities

MK-Challenges are shorter therapies set in modified or redesigned areas. Programs group activities and connect them with rewards and progression. Variators can alter Trials and affect their challenge, though the precise board structure and available activities may change over time. These definitions come from Red Barrels’ Early Access overview, published in May 2023; use the current in-game board for what is available now. Red Barrels’ gameplay overview.

What Rigs, Prescriptions, and Amps do

System Beginner’s understanding What to check in the live game
Rigs Reusable tools that provide utility during a Trial. Current effects, upgrade options, and availability.
Prescriptions Character upgrades associated with physical and mental abilities. Current effects, duration, costs, and unlocks.
Amps Contraband items that add another loadout option later in progression. Current catalogue, effects, and unlock requirements.

Those are the broad roles described in Red Barrels’ May 2023 Early Access overview, not a current item guide. That source’s details about upgrade purchasing, permanent effects, tiers, and progression should not be treated as October 2026 instructions. How to choose a beginner loadout

Start with the Trial’s demands

Pick a Rig for the utility it provides in the activity you are about to play, rather than assuming one option is best everywhere. Read its current description and consider what problem you want it to help solve.

Think about the team’s coverage

Red Barrels recommends tailoring a loadout to a Trial or coordinating with teammates. In a group, compare choices so your tools complement one another. Solo players make those choices without teammates to cover different roles, but the available sources do not establish that solo play is easier or harder.

Treat Prescriptions and Amps as separate decisions

Consider Prescriptions for the character upgrades they currently offer, and Amps for the additional options available in their current menu. Because effects and unlock rules can change, judge the choices by their live descriptions—not by old cost lists or build rankings.

How progression works—and why the board matters

At the game’s 1.0 launch in March 2024, Red Barrels presented Program Genesis as the straightforward route toward Rebirth. The announcement also described Release Tokens, a Release Protocol, and later challenges in Program X and Program Ultra. Those are launch-era progression details, not confirmed current requirements. For actionable next steps, use the current Trial board and the objectives shown in game. Red Barrels’ September 4, 2026 roadmap announced Season 7.1 and a roadmap through the end of that year, confirming the game is still being updated; it does not verify that the earlier progression sequence remains unchanged. Playing alone, with a group, and across platforms

The PlayStation listing says the game can be played alone or in teams, requires online play, and supports up to four online players on the listed version. Check the requirements for your platform before arranging a session. PlayStation’s listing for The Outlast Trials.

Red Barrels announced cross-play at launch in March 2024. Its statement that cross-progression was not supported reflects that date, so verify the current status for your platforms rather than assuming that progress transfers between them. Red Barrels’ Early Access launch announcement.

A later Season 7.1 announcement on September 4, 2026 set the update for September 8 and outlined a roadmap through the end of 2026. These announcements are useful context, but they do not establish current Rig rankings or guarantee that every announced feature remains in precisely the same state.
