The Precinct Review: Procedural Patrols, Pursuits, and a Repetitive Loop

The Precinct blends routine police work with pursuits and shootouts in 1980s Averno City. Its atmosphere and driving stand out, but repetition and uneven storytelling may wear thin.

The Precinct is most compelling when it makes the work of a rookie cop feel like more than a string of gunfights: you can pull drivers over, pursue suspects, process arrests, and then find yourself in a larger investigation. That procedural-action mix gives fictional 1980s Averno City a distinct identity, but repetition, a limited map, and uneven storytelling keep the ambition from fully paying off. Whether it is worth playing depends on how much you enjoy the patrol routine between the action set pieces.

What kind of game is The Precinct?

Developed by Fallen Tree Games, The Precinct puts you in the role of rookie officer Nick Cordell Jr. in Averno City, a fictional setting with a 1980s crime-film atmosphere. It combines top-down action with the everyday work of policing: traffic enforcement and suspect processing sit alongside pursuits, shootouts, and longer investigations. That blend—not simply the promise of an open city—is the game’s central idea. PCGamesN and Traxion both focus on the tension between routine duties and action, though they weigh the results differently.

How satisfying is the patrol loop?

The procedural details give ordinary calls a place in the experience rather than treating them as background before the next firefight. Traffic stops and processing suspects help establish the rhythm of police work, while pursuits and investigations provide escalation. The appeal is in moving between these modes: a shift can feel grounded in routine, then suddenly become an action sequence.

The same structure is also the main weakness. Patrol duties and suspect processing can become repetitive, and the routine does not always develop enough to make each return feel fresh. PCGamesN’s Reid McCarter summarized that frustration in the review’s verdict: “The Precinct is a deeply repetitive open-world police simulator that blends classic, top-down GTA action set pieces with dull police work.” Traxion’s review is more receptive to the sandbox and activities, but also identifies repetition as a drawback.

  • Go solo or call-in backup with an in-depth support system

Driving, pursuits, and combat

Driving and pursuits are among the clearest sources of momentum. They let the game shift from methodical patrol to urgent response without abandoning its police-sandbox premise. For players who want a mix of enforcement and action, those sequences can make the slower duties worthwhile.

On-foot combat is less consistently effective. DayOne notes that it is weaker than the game’s other attractions, while Pixel Bandits describes the controls as sometimes awkward. The result is an uneven action balance: the game has exciting pursuits and shootouts, but not every encounter feels equally polished.

Does Averno City feel like a convincing setting?

Averno’s 1980s identity gives the patrol-and-crime premise a strong frame. The city’s atmosphere is a notable part of the appeal, and Traxion praises the sandbox and its activities. Yet atmosphere is not the same as breadth: reviews also describe the open world as small, limiting how much the setting can offer over time.

That trade-off matters because the game relies on returning to the same city and its duties. If you enjoy a compact sandbox with a defined mood, Averno can be a strength. If you expect a large world with extensive variety, the limited scale may make the loop feel narrower sooner.

How well does the story hold together?

Nick Cordell Jr.’s investigation into his father’s murder gives the patrol work a larger narrative thread. It provides a personal reason for the rookie to pursue cases, but it does not consistently turn that premise into strong storytelling. PCGamesN criticizes the writing and tonal inconsistency; Traxion and DayOne likewise point to story limitations, with DayOne describing the plot as generic.

The story is therefore better treated as a backdrop and motivation for the police sandbox than as the main reason to play. If you are looking for a sharply written crime drama, the premise may promise more than the narrative delivers.

Who should play The Precinct?

  • Consider it if you like police-sandbox games that mix routine duties with pursuits, shootouts, and investigations, and you value a strong setting and driving.
  • Be cautious if repetitive tasks quickly wear on you, you want a large open world, or you expect consistently strong on-foot combat and storytelling.

Reviews do not converge on a single verdict: the sandbox, atmosphere, and action work better for some critics than the repeated procedures and narrative do for others. The central question is whether the routine makes the action feel more distinctive—or simply delays it.
