The ProStar 9400 is best described as a portable multimedia laptop, not a proven dedicated gaming system. A vintage-ad archive records a ProStar 9400 advertisement in 1994, while a hardware reference describes the related FMA9400 family with 486 processor options, color-display choices, VLB graphics, 16-bit audio and a 2x CD-ROM. Those sources do not establish a 1995 launch date or document specific game performance.
What was the ProStar 9400?
MacDat’s Microstar NS-9540 database entry associates the ProStar 9400 with ODM model Microstar NS-9540 and lists a ProStar 9400 advertisement from 1994. ODM refers to the original design manufacturer: a computer could be built from a shared design and sold under different brand or model names.

The archive also associates other products dated 1995 with the NS-9540 designation, but that does not prove that the ProStar 9400 itself first went on sale in 1995. The title’s date is therefore uncertain; the clearest dated ProStar 9400 evidence is the 1994 advertisement.

What hardware did the reported configuration include?
A secondary enthusiast reference describes the FMA9400 as a 1994 multimedia laptop. These are reported family details, not a confirmed specification for every ProStar-branded machine; the archive record does not provide a complete ProStar spec sheet.

Was it a gaming laptop?
The available records support calling it a portable multimedia laptop: its reported hardware included color displays, audio and a CD-ROM drive. They do not establish that ProStar marketed the 9400 specifically for gaming, name compatible games, or provide game-performance benchmarks. It would be misleading to present it as a dedicated gaming laptop or claim that it ran particular titles based on these sources alone.

How to identify a specific ProStar
Vintage laptop branding can be confusing because products based on the same ODM design may appear under different names. If you are identifying a machine or considering restoration, check the model label on the unit and seek documentation for that exact model and configuration. The family-level reference says NiMH battery power was used, but it does not identify a safe replacement battery or charger; do not assume that a generic part is compatible.
A separate, much later MBC Prostar MMX product line advertised in 1998 is not evidence for the ProStar 9400’s specifications or date. It should not be conflated with this 1990s model.
