Nintendo’s franchises and third-party games span platforming, racing, role-playing, sports, shooters and multiplayer party play. Rare’s games are a major part of the N64’s identity, though, so leaving them out would change the collection’s nostalgic appeal. This is a hypothetical lineup argument—not an announced console or official Nintendo roster.
Is there an official Nintendo 64 Classic lineup?
No official N64 Classic device or game list is established by the sources available here. The premise is best treated as a thought exercise: what could a compact collection include, and would it still feel representative if it left out Rare?

A useful historical comparison is Paul Palumbo’s October 4, 2018, proposal for 20 games on a hypothetical N64 Classic. It is an editorial selection, not a forecast validated by Nintendo. Its broader point still holds: a collection can draw on Nintendo’s best-known series and varied third-party games rather than treating one developer’s catalog as the whole console.
What could a 20-game lineup look like without Rare?
The following is an editorial proposal, not a prediction. It adapts the titles in Palumbo’s 2018 list, omitting Donkey Kong 64 and filling the slot with another game from that proposal. The selection balances recognizable Nintendo series with genre variety and distinct solo and multiplayer experiences.

| Game | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| Super Mario 64 | A defining 3D platformer and a natural Nintendo centerpiece. |
| The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time | A major action-adventure game for the solo-player side of the collection. |
| Star Fox 64 | Arcade-style space combat and a faster, mission-based change of pace. |
| Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards | A colorful platformer that broadens the character and play-style mix. |
| Mario Kart 64 | Competitive racing with strong local multiplayer appeal. |
| Paper Mario | A role-playing game with a different rhythm from the action and racing picks. |
| Super Smash Bros. | A multiplayer fighting game built around familiar Nintendo characters. |
| F-Zero X | High-speed futuristic racing distinct from Mario Kart. |
| Mario Golf | A sports game that adds a slower, more tactical multiplayer option. |
| Mario Tennis | A second sports option, with a more immediate, match-based format. |
| The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask | A second Zelda adventure, offering a markedly different tone and structure from Ocarina of Time. |
| Mario Party 2 | A board-game-style party title for groups playing together. |
| Pokémon Stadium 2 | A Pokémon battle-focused game that adds another kind of multiplayer session. |
| Harvest Moon 64 | A slower farming and life-simulation option amid the action-heavy games. |
| Rayman 2: The Great Escape | A third-party 3D platformer alongside Mario and Kirby. |
| Pokémon Snap | A more relaxed, photography-based game rather than a conventional battle or platformer. |
| Pilotwings 64 | A flight and exploration game that offers a change from racing and combat. |
| 1080° Snowboarding | A snowboarding game that expands the sports selection. |
| Bomberman 64 | A third-party action game with a distinct multiplayer-friendly identity. |
| Wave Race 64 | Watercraft racing, adding a different setting and feel to the racing games. |
The point is not that every choice is beyond debate. It is that the list covers several kinds of play: narrative adventures, platformers, sports, racing, role-playing and games designed for a roomful of players. A 20-game collection cannot represent every N64 favorite, but it need not lean on a single developer to offer breadth.
What would be missing if Rare were left out?
A collection without Rare would lose games many players associate closely with the N64 era, especially GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Diddy Kong Racing. A forum search result captured one version of that concern: “Without Rare, particularly Goldeneye, the N64 classic won’t have the same nostalgic pull for many the SNES and NES classic did.” That is a reader sentiment, not evidence about how most players feel.
The counterargument is about coverage, not equivalence. Mario Kart 64 cannot stand in for a first-person shooter, and a Nintendo-heavy list would not recreate every part of the era’s identity. But a collection with multiple genres and memorable multiplayer games could still be compelling on its own terms. Whether that feels like an adequate N64 retrospective depends on what a player most wants from it.
Does Rare’s catalog have to be all or nothing?
No. Nintendo Switch Online’s current N64 library provides a practical example of mixed availability, though it says nothing definitive about the rights or feasibility of a hypothetical dedicated device. In its February 25, 2026 ranking of the best N64 games, GamesRadar+ marks Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye 007 and Blast Corps as available through Nintendo Classics, while Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark and Conker’s Bad Fur Day are marked unavailable. That is the ranking’s availability snapshot; it is not a complete catalog or a statement about future products.

- Sleek Black N64 Console: A classic Nintendo 64 reimagined in a bold black finish, blending retro charm with a modern aesthetic.
- Two Vibrant Controllers: Jump straight into multiplayer fun with a red and blue controller included, perfect for head-to-head gaming sessions.
- Save & Store with Ease: The included 256KB memory card gives you plenty of space to save game progress across your favorite titles.
- Modern Display Ready: An HDMI and cable are included, delivering a clean, high-quality connection to today's TVs right out of the box.
- Everything You Need to Play: Complete with a power and all essentiala, this is ready for instant setup — ideal for nostalgic fans and curious newcomers alike.
That distinction matters: a game’s developer and its present-day availability in a subscription catalog are separate questions. The mixed status shows that Rare games are not simply absent from Nintendo’s current Classics offering, but it does not establish what could be included on unannounced hardware.

Nintendo’s current official route for N64 Classics is Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. On its Nintendo Classics page, Nintendo describes a combined library of “over 270 titles” across Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, Super NES, Game Boy and NES systems. That is Nintendo’s figure for the combined library, not the N64 catalog alone. Nintendo says GameCube titles are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo also says, “Many of these games also include fun features like online play and rewind so you can retry the tough parts.” The statement applies to many games, not necessarily every title. The page mentions members-only access to classic-style controllers, but does not identify a particular model or establish its compatibility across consoles. Its featured bonus-month promotion ended July 28, 2026; it should not be treated as currently available.
The subscription service is a way to access Nintendo Classics; it is not evidence that Nintendo sells a dedicated N64 Classic device. Its present catalog also cannot predict which games, if any, might appear on hypothetical hardware.
