The Retroid Pocket 5 makes a strong case as an all-around retro handheld: it pairs a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED screen with familiar controls, expandable storage and performance that published reviewers put around the PlayStation 2 and GameCube era. It is not a plug-and-play library of old games, though. Android setup takes effort, Switch emulation varies by game, and buyers should verify the RAM in the specific unit they are considering.
Why the Retroid Pocket 5 stands out
The appeal is the combination rather than one headline feature. The screen is a 5.5-inch AMOLED panel with 1080p resolution and a 60fps specification, according to Retroid’s product listing. Retroid also lists Hall-effect sticks, analog L2/R2 triggers, active cooling, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, a 5000mAh battery and a TF card slot alongside 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage.
That gives the Pocket 5 a useful mix: a vivid display for older games, controls intended for modern play, room to expand storage, and enough power for a broad range of classic systems. It also runs Android 13, so the device can handle Android games and game streaming as well as emulators. The trade-off is that Android makes configuration part of the experience.
What games can it handle?
Published review summaries place PlayStation 2 and GameCube in the Pocket 5’s comfortable range. That is a practical expectation, not a guarantee that every game from either system will run perfectly. Switch emulation is more variable and depends on the game; the available reviews do not support a blanket promise of compatibility. Handheld Verdict’s synthesis of published reviews and Android Authority’s description both draw that distinction.
#1 Best Overall
- NO PRELOAD GAMES: Please note that there are no preload games on Retroid Pocket Classic.
- Immersive AMOLED Display: 3.92-inch 1240x1080@60fps OLED touchscreen delivers vibrant colors, deep blacks, and wide viewing angles for superior retro gaming.
- Android 14 Flexibility: The Retroid Pocket Classic runs the Android 14 operating system, which has full support for the Google Play Store to download and update new apps.
- Versatile Connectivity: WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, USB-C output for TV play. 5000mAh battery for hours of gameplay.
- Expansive Storage Options: With a generous 128GB internal storage and the flexibility to expand storage via a Micro SD card slot, the Pocket Classic provides ample space for an extensive game library.
Native Android games and streaming are additional options, but they do not change the device’s core trade-off: this is a capable Android handheld, not a console with a curated, ready-to-play retro library. You will need to choose and configure emulators and, if desired, a front end. The independent guide describes that setup as a commitment rather than a frictionless out-of-box experience.
Specifications to know before buying
| Specification | What is established |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Android 13, per Retroid’s current listing. |
| Display | 5.5-inch AMOLED, 1080p and 60fps, per Retroid. The independent review synthesis says reviewers praised its brightness and color. |
| Processor and graphics | Retroid lists one A77 core at 2.8GHz, three A77 cores at 2.4GHz, four A55 cores at 1.8GHz, and Adreno 650 graphics. Handheld Verdict identifies the chipset as Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. |
| Memory | Retroid’s current product-page text lists 12GB LPDDR4x. Handheld Verdict reports that the launch listing and specification sheet showed 8GB. Confirm the configuration for the exact unit; do not assume every Pocket 5 has the same RAM. |
| Storage | 128GB UFS 3.1 plus a TF card slot, according to Retroid. A microSD card is an optional way to add storage; no particular size or speed class is established here. |
| Controls and connectivity | Retroid lists Hall sticks, analog L2/R2 triggers, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. |
| Battery and cooling | Retroid lists a 5000mAh battery and active cooling. |
Handheld Verdict also reports a 500-nit display, DisplayPort output over USB-C, 27W charging, and dimensions and weight from secondary specifications. Those figures are not shown in Retroid’s current product details summarized above; check the manufacturer’s listing if any is decisive for your setup.
Is it comfortable to play?
The Pocket 5 has conventional handheld controls, including a D-pad, face buttons, sticks and analog triggers. Retroid specifies Hall sticks, while published reviewer impressions of ergonomics, D-pad placement and speakers differ. Comfort is personal, so those details are best treated as points to consider rather than universal strengths or flaws.
If possible, try the layout before committing, especially if you are sensitive to D-pad position or plan long sessions. A good display and capable controls do not guarantee that a particular grip or button arrangement will suit every player.

Android setup is part of the deal
Android gives the Pocket 5 flexibility, but the setup is not equivalent to turning on a dedicated console. Expect to select emulators and configure them, and optionally organize your collection in a front end. The amount of effort depends on how much customization you want; anyone expecting a fully prepared retro library should adjust that expectation.
The device supports OTA updates according to Retroid. Its TF card slot also means storage expansion is possible, though buyers should choose a card based on their own needs rather than treating a specific capacity or speed as required.
Is the Retroid Pocket 5 still worth it?
It can be a good fit if your priorities are a high-resolution AMOLED screen, portable controls, expandable storage and emulation centered on systems up to PS2 and GameCube. It is less compelling if you want the newest chip tier, minimal setup, or reliable Switch performance across a library. Retroid has newer models, and the Pocket 5 is no longer the newest option; the available sources do not establish a complete current head-to-head ranking against competitors.
Compare alternatives on the things that will affect your actual use: performance tier, screen type and size, ergonomics, controls, setup requirements, storage and total price. A newer device may be preferable on performance or convenience, while the Pocket 5’s AMOLED display and familiar handheld format may matter more to someone focused on older systems.

What to check on a used Pocket 5
Before paying for a second-hand unit, ask the seller for an About-screen photo to confirm the model and RAM configuration. Handheld Verdict’s used-buying guide recommends checking the following:
- Inspect a plain, light screen for burn-in, dead pixels or uneven tint.
- Test stick centering and full travel, triggers, D-pad and face buttons.
- Ask about battery life and charging behavior.
- Confirm the previous owner’s Google account has been removed before performing a factory reset.
The guide also reports that Retroid lists replacement Hall joysticks and Pocket 5 button sets. Check Retroid’s current parts listing for compatibility and availability before relying on a repair part.
