Its growth came from a distinctive model: people can play experiences made by other users, create their own with Roblox Studio, and share them through a common platform. Roblox is therefore not one game so much as a system for making and exploring many kinds of 3D experiences.
When was Roblox created, and who founded it?
Roblox was founded in 2004 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, according to the company’s official company information. Roblox’s 2021 SEC filing traces the idea further back: in 1989, Baszucki and Cassel created Interactive Physics, a 2D simulated physics lab that let students explore collisions and build destructible structures. They started Roblox in 2004 to carry those ideas about imagination and creativity into a broader form of social interaction.
The available company sources establish the founding and project-start year, but not an exact public release date. Roblox CEO Baszucki later used a different year in a 2024 statement: “When Erik Cassel and I founded Roblox in 2006, we were motivated by a question that still drives the company today: How do humans connect through play?” That was his wording at Roblox’s 2024 Developer Conference; the company’s support page and SEC filing identify 2004 as the founding or start year.
Why Roblox is a platform, not just a game
Roblox’s own filing describes three connected parts: the Client, Studio, and Cloud. The Client is the application people use to explore 3D worlds. Studio is the free toolset creators use to build, publish, and operate experiences. Cloud services provide the infrastructure that supports the platform. Roblox’s current Creator Hub documentation likewise presents it as a 3D creation platform, with guidance for building, testing, distributing, and monetizing creations.

This structure helps explain the difference between Roblox and a standalone game with one fixed world. Its content is supplied substantially by its community: creators make experiences and most avatar-related items, while other users move among them under a shared identity. Roblox’s 2025 filing describes millions of experiences and creators ranging from students and hobbyists to full-time studios.
How Roblox’s model supported its growth
A wide catalog gives players different reasons to return, while creation tools give users a way to contribute new experiences and items. That can form a reinforcing cycle: more creators add variety, and a larger audience can make publishing worthwhile for more creators. This is a useful explanation of the platform’s model, not proof that any one feature caused Roblox’s growth.

Roblox has also described four priorities it set out at its 2021 direct listing: expanding around the world, broadening appeal, supporting a broader range of uses, and growing and improving the economy. These are company-stated strategic priorities, rather than independent evidence that any one priority produced a particular growth result.
How large Roblox became
Roblox reported an average of 127 million daily active users across more than 180 countries for the year ended December 31, 2025. For that same year, it reported 123.9 billion hours engaged, an average of 2.7 hours per daily active user each day, and more than 24 different experiences explored per user per month on average. These are company-reported figures for 2025, not a count of users on a particular day.

For comparison, Roblox reported 79.5 million daily active users as of June 30, 2024. That is a point-in-time figure, whereas the 127 million figure is an annual average for 2025; they should not be treated as like-for-like measurements of the same period.
How creators make money on Roblox
The free Studio toolset lowers the barrier to trying creation, while Roblox offers creators several possible routes to earn. Its 2025 Form 10-K lists in-experience purchases, subscriptions or private-server access, paid access, passes, advertising, the Creator Rewards Program, intellectual-property licensing, and payouts through Developer Exchange (DevEx). Roblox says Creator Rewards launched in July 2025, replacing the legacy Engagement-Based Payouts Program.

The scale of creator earnings is substantial for some participants, but reported averages for top earners should not be read as typical income. Roblox’s 2025 Economic Impact Report says creators globally earned more than $1 billion through DevEx from March 2024 to March 2025, an increase of more than 31% year over year. It also reports that the top 1,000 developers averaged $820,000 in 2024; the top 100 averaged $6 million, and the top 10 averaged $33.9 million. Each figure describes a selected, high-earning group—not what a new or typical creator can expect.

At its September 2024 Developer Conference, Roblox announced a commerce initiative intended to let creators sell physical merchandise within experiences through e-commerce partners, naming Shopify as its first partner. The announcement also described a Creator Affiliate Program to reward creators who bring new users. This records what Roblox announced at that time; it does not establish the current availability or terms of those programs, or whether Shopify’s role has since changed.

Taken together, the history is less a simple story of one game becoming popular than a shift from a creative simulation idea to a platform combining play, creation, community, and monetization. Roblox’s scale shows how far that model reached, while its own growth figures and stated priorities do not by themselves prove a single cause for its success.
