The ROG Xbox Ally X Is Fantastic, but Incomplete

The ROG Xbox Ally X is a superb premium Windows gaming handheld, but its Xbox interface cannot fully hide Windows friction, third-party launcher gaps, and the high $999.99 price.

The ROG Xbox Ally X is one of the most capable and comfortable Windows gaming handhelds available, but it is not yet the seamless portable Xbox many buyers may imagine. Its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of memory, 80Wh battery, 120Hz display, and excellent grips make the hardware feel premium. The unfinished part is the software layer: Xbox full-screen mode improves Windows handheld use without eliminating Windows, Armoury Crate, third-party launchers, separate update paths, or library inconsistencies.

At $999.99 in the US, that distinction matters. The ROG Xbox Ally X is a strong choice for enthusiasts who want the fastest, most comfortable Xbox-oriented Windows handheld. It is a weaker choice for anyone expecting console simplicity or exceptional value.

What the ROG Xbox Ally X actually is

The ROG Xbox Ally X is an ASUS-manufactured gaming handheld designed in collaboration with Xbox. It runs Windows 11 Home, not the operating system used by Xbox consoles. That means it can access PC Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, and ordinary Windows applications.

Xbox adds a controller-first full-screen experience, direct boot support, Game Bar access, Play Anywhere integration where supported, and Handheld Compatibility indicators. Those features make the device feel more Xbox-like, but they do not turn it into a portable Xbox Series console.

Question Answer
Does it use Xbox software and branding? Yes.
Is it a traditional Xbox console? No. It is a Windows 11 gaming PC in handheld form.
Can it access Xbox and PC games? Yes, but the exact experience varies by title, launcher, region, subscription, and whether a native PC version exists.

That is the central fact behind the product’s appeal and its limitations: Windows provides broad compatibility, while Xbox provides a friendlier front door.

Why the hardware is fantastic

Performance and memory

The X model uses AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory. That is a meaningful step above the base ROG Xbox Ally’s 16GB configuration and gives demanding games more room to work with.

It is capable of running modern PC games at sensible handheld settings, particularly when the player uses an appropriate resolution, upscaling mode, frame-rate cap, and power profile. However, performance is not a single number. Results depend on the game, patch, drivers, BIOS, wattage, resolution, and whether the handheld is plugged in. Aggregated review coverage found worthwhile gains in some games but not a uniformly dramatic uplift across the entire library.

Higher performance also has costs: more heat, fan noise, and battery consumption. The X has the headroom to run demanding software, but it cannot make every modern AAA game behave like a console title at high settings and 120 frames per second.

An unusually large battery

The 80Wh battery is one of the clearest hardware advantages. It is substantially larger than the base ROG Xbox Ally’s 60Wh unit and gives the X more capacity for demanding workloads.

That does not mean all-day AAA gaming. Actual runtime changes considerably with game intensity, screen brightness, refresh rate, resolution, frame-rate limits, and performance mode. Some reviews have considered the battery among the better results in the handheld-PC category, while other coverage has found demanding workloads disappointing. Both experiences can be plausible under different test conditions.

The useful conclusion is that the X has better battery hardware headroom, not guaranteed long unplugged sessions.

Comfortable Xbox-inspired ergonomics

The contoured grips are one of the device’s strongest qualities. They are shaped more like an Xbox controller than the flatter bodies of many handheld PCs, making long two-handed sessions more comfortable for many players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is size and weight. Xbox lists dimensions of 290.8 Ă— 121.5 Ă— 50.7mm and a weight of approximately 715g. That is comfortable in the hands for some players but substantial in a travel bag, tiring for smaller hands, and not especially suitable for prolonged one-handed use. The right comparison is not simply weight: grip shape can make a heavier device feel better than a lighter, flatter one.

A good, but ambitious, display

The 7-inch IPS display runs at 1920Ă—1080 with a 120Hz refresh rate, 500-nit brightness, AMD FreeSync Premium, Gorilla Glass Victus, and an anti-reflection coating. It is a strong specification for a handheld.

Most demanding games will not sustain 120 frames per second at native 1080p, so the refresh rate should not be understood as a promise of maximum frame rates. It is still useful for smoother menus, lighter games, competitive titles, and better frame-time presentation when performance is available.

Useful connectivity

The X includes a USB4 Type-C port with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0, a second USB-C port, UHS-II microSD support, a 3.5mm headset jack, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4. Xbox describes the main USB-C connection as Thunderbolt 4-compatible.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X Gaming Handheld, 7” FHD 120Hz, AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB LPDDR5, 1TB SSD, Win 11, Long Battery Life 22.3 Hours, Portable Weight, Black (Japan Version)

Powered by Windows 11 Home 64-bit, this black handheld balances portability (11.4"x4.8"x1.1", 1.6 lbs) and immersive play.
  • ⚡ Top-Tier AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Processor | 8-core/16-thread chip paired with integrated AMD Radeon Graphics, 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 onboard memory & 1TB PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD for lightning-fast load times, seamless multitasking & crisp gaming graphics. Max power consumption of 65W optimizes performance without excessive energy drain.
  • 🔋 Long-Lasting Battery & Flexible Power Options | 4-cell 80Wh lithium polymer battery offers up to 13.9hrs of video playback or 22.3hrs of idle use—ideal for all-day gaming marathons or remote work.
  • 🎮 Professional Gaming Controls & Smart Features | Full layout with left/right sticks, D-pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, bumpers/triggers, 2 macro buttons & dedicated Xbox/display/library keys for customized gameplay. Built-in accelerometer/gyroscope for motion control; Windows Hello fingerprint recognition ensures secure, one-touch login.
  • 🔌 Versatile Connectivity & Complete Accessories Kit | Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.4 for lag-free online gaming & device pairing; 2 Type-C ports (USB 4 + USB 3.2 Gen2) support data transfer, video output & PD charging.

That makes the handheld practical as a docked desktop-style PC with an external display, keyboard, mouse, or controller. A dock adds cost and mainly benefits desk or TV play; it does not improve the core portable experience.

What Xbox adds

The Xbox full-screen experience is more than a branding exercise. It gives the device a controller-first starting point, supports direct booting into a handheld interface, and makes Xbox content easier to reach without immediately dropping the player onto the Windows desktop.

Xbox also promotes Play Anywhere support and a Handheld Compatibility program. A supported Play Anywhere purchase can work across compatible Xbox, PC, and handheld platforms without a second purchase. The qualification is important: Play Anywhere applies to eligible titles, not every game in an Xbox console library. Cloud gaming and remote play are separate paths from local PC execution.

Game Pass benefits also depend on the current plan, region, device, and title. The safe assumption is that the X can access the PC side of the Xbox ecosystem, not that every console game will run locally.

The best description is therefore an Xbox-oriented Windows handheld. The Xbox layer improves the front door. Windows remains the house.

Where “incomplete” begins

Too many control centers

The device can involve the Xbox full-screen experience, Armoury Crate, the Windows desktop, the Xbox app, and individual third-party launchers. Each has a legitimate role, but together they create an experience that is less unified than the product’s console-like presentation suggests.

A player may need to switch interfaces to change hardware settings, launch a game, respond to a Windows prompt, install a driver, or find an update. Review coverage has identified this split between Xbox’s interface and ASUS’s Armoury Crate as a central weakness.

Third-party libraries are not always unified

Because the X runs Windows, third-party games are often playable even when they do not appear neatly in the Xbox library. That is a compatibility strength, but it also exposes the limits of the unified-library promise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Launch coverage identified inconsistent presentation of some third-party games, including titles using EA’s application ecosystem. The practical distinction is:

  • Can the game run? Often yes, because this is Windows.
  • Will it appear, launch, update, authenticate, and handle controller input like an Xbox game? Not necessarily.

Launcher-specific sign-ins, overlays, cloud saves, updates, and controller behavior can all remain separate. The problem is not simply that one game is missing from a menu. It is that the device’s main promise is a coherent library, while the underlying PC ecosystem remains fragmented.

Windows friction remains

Windows offers flexibility, but it also brings desktop-style controls, small touch targets, pop-ups, account prompts, driver management, and occasional controller-focus problems. Suspend and resume can be less predictable than on a closed console.

Xbox full-screen mode makes the experience better, but it does not fully optimize Windows 11 for portable touchscreen use. Buyers who dislike Windows handheld maintenance will still encounter it here.

Is $999.99 justified?

The price makes the X a premium purchase rather than an easy recommendation. You are paying for the combination of performance, 24GB of memory, 1TB storage, an 80Wh battery, a 120Hz display, strong ergonomics, and broad Windows compatibility.

That premium is easier to justify if you regularly play demanding PC games, use multiple storefronts, subscribe to PC Game Pass, or want a high-end handheld that can also become a docked PC. It is harder to justify if you mainly play older games, already own a capable handheld, want a simple console-like interface, or are shopping primarily on price.

The question is not whether the hardware is worth $999.99 in isolation. It is whether the Xbox identity delivers enough software simplicity to justify paying premium-console money for a Windows PC.

ROG Xbox Ally X versus the base ROG Xbox Ally

The X model’s major upgrades are the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB rather than 16GB of memory, 1TB rather than 512GB of storage, an 80Wh rather than 60Wh battery, and higher-end USB4 connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The base ROG Xbox Ally may be the better value for lighter games, older libraries, lower resolution targets, and buyers who primarily want the Xbox-oriented interface and comfortable grips. Choose the X when demanding games, memory headroom, storage, and battery capacity are priorities. Choose the base model when the interface and ergonomics matter more than maximum performance.

ROG Xbox Ally X versus Steam Deck OLED

These devices prioritize different things rather than simply competing on a single performance scale.

Priority Better fit
Windows compatibility and multiple PC stores ROG Xbox Ally X
PC Game Pass and Xbox integration ROG Xbox Ally X
High-end handheld performance ROG Xbox Ally X
SteamOS simplicity and game-focused navigation Steam Deck OLED
Simple suspend/resume workflow Steam Deck OLED
Lowest-cost entry into handheld PC gaming Usually Steam Deck OLED, subject to current regional pricing

The Steam Deck OLED is the stronger fit for a Steam-first buyer who values a console-like operating system and straightforward ownership. The ROG Xbox Ally X is the stronger fit for someone who needs Windows compatibility, Game Pass, and access to launchers that do not work as naturally on SteamOS.

Practical problems and what to try

These are workflow checks, not evidence that every unit has a defect:

  1. A game is missing from the Xbox library: launch it through the storefront or third-party launcher that owns it. Library visibility does not determine whether the game is compatible.
  2. Controller input fails in a launcher: start the game through its owning launcher, check the device’s remapping tools, and keep a mouse or keyboard available for initial setup.
  3. Updates appear in several places: check Windows Update, Armoury Crate, the Xbox app, and the game’s own launcher. The distributed update path is part of the platform’s friction.
  4. Battery drains quickly: reduce brightness, cap the frame rate, lower resolution or performance mode, and check whether a demanding game is unnecessarily running at a high refresh rate.
  5. The device feels too heavy: test the grip and session comfort rather than judging weight alone. At 715g, it may feel excellent in two hands but tiring during travel or one-handed use.
  6. You expect console-style wake and resume: treat Windows behavior as a purchase consideration. This is a fit issue, not something that more performance can solve.

Who should buy the ROG Xbox Ally X?

  • Xbox and PC Game Pass users who want a premium handheld.
  • PC players who use Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, or Battle.net.
  • Buyers who value controller-like grips and long-session comfort.
  • Enthusiasts willing to adjust graphics settings and manage Windows.
  • Players who want one of the strongest current Windows handheld configurations.

Who should wait or buy elsewhere?

  • Anyone expecting a seamless portable Xbox console.
  • Buyers frustrated by Windows setup, launchers, and account prompts.
  • People whose main priority is low price.
  • Players who mostly run older or lightweight games and do not need maximum performance.
  • Users who need reliable all-day unplugged AAA gaming.
  • Anyone unwilling to manage drivers, updates, launchers, and occasional compatibility problems.

Verdict

The ROG Xbox Ally X is fantastic as a premium Windows gaming handheld. Its hardware feels deliberate and high-end: the grips are comfortable, the Z2 Extreme has serious performance headroom, the 24GB memory configuration is useful, the 80Wh battery is generous, and the display and connectivity are strong.

It is incomplete as a seamless console replacement. Xbox full-screen mode improves the experience, but it has not absorbed the complexity of Windows, Armoury Crate, third-party stores, launcher authentication, and scattered updates.

Buy it if you want the fastest, most comfortable Xbox-oriented Windows handheld and accept those compromises. Choose the cheaper ROG Xbox Ally if you do not need maximum performance. Choose Steam Deck OLED if simplicity and value matter more than Windows compatibility. Wait or buy elsewhere if your definition of an Xbox handheld is a closed-console experience with a unified library and effortless resume.
