You may see messages such as “The program can’t start because FTD2XX.dll is missing from your computer,” “Failed to load FTD2XX.DLL,” or “DLL file, FTD2XX.DLL, was not found.” The ftd2xx.dll file is FTDI’s FTD2XX Dynamic Link Library, used by applications that communicate directly with hardware containing FTDI chips.
The 60-second answer
ftd2xx.dll is not a Windows system file. It is part of FTDIChip CDM Drivers and is published by FTDI Ltd. Hardware utilities, diagnostic tools, embroidery-transfer software, industrial instruments, radio-programming tools, embedded-development software, and similar applications may use it.
The safest repair is:
- Identify the application named in the error.
- Repair or reinstall that application using its official installer.
- Install the FTDI package recommended by the hardware or software vendor.
- If the application uses a standard FTDI device, install the Windows D2XX package from FTDI’s official D2XX Drivers page.
- Match the DLL architecture to the application, not merely to Windows.
- Do not download an isolated DLL from a random website or register it with
regsvr32.
The current FTDI Windows desktop package includes both D2XX and VCP components and supports Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server. FTDI’s driver page lists Windows desktop packages for x86 and x64 systems. Legacy applications may still require an older or vendor-customized package, so the newest generic driver is not automatically the correct answer.
What is ftd2xx.dll?
FTDI’s D2XX interface lets application software communicate directly with FTDI USB devices without using a virtual COM port. The application calls functions in ftd2xx.dll, while the lower-level FTDI driver components communicate with the USB hardware.

The file belongs to the FTDIChip CDM Drivers package and has the internal description FTD2XX Dynamic Link Library. Common software that may depend on it includes:
- USB-to-serial configuration utilities
- Automobile and industrial diagnostic programs
- Radio and embedded-device programming tools
- Electronic test and measurement software
- Embroidery-transfer systems
- JTAG and development-board tools
- Hardware utilities that use FTDI USB FIFO or converter chips
Not every FTDI device or application uses D2XX. Some software uses FTDI’s VCP driver, which exposes the device as a normal COM port. Other products may use a different FTDI interface or bundle a private library.
D2XX versus VCP
These two FTDI interfaces are easy to confuse:
- D2XX: Direct application access through the FTDI API and
ftd2xx.dll. - VCP: Makes the USB device appear as a virtual serial COM port to Windows applications.
If your application expects D2XX, Windows can show the USB device in Device Manager while the application still fails because its application-facing DLL is missing, incompatible, or installed in the wrong location.
Common ftd2xx.dll error messages
The exact wording helps identify the failure:

Before changing Windows files, note:
- Which application displays the message
- Whether the problem started after reinstalling software
- Whether Windows was upgraded
- Whether you replaced or reconnected the USB device
- Whether antivirus software quarantined a file
- Whether the application was moved or manually deleted
- The complete path shown in the error, if one is provided
That information determines whether you need an application repair, an FTDI package, a runtime dependency, or a Windows integrity repair.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely fix when one program fails while the rest of Windows works normally.
A hardware application often keeps a private copy of ftd2xx.dll beside its executable. Installing a generic copy into a Windows folder may not repair that application and can create a version conflict.
Use the application’s repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
If repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install it again from the hardware manufacturer or software publisher. Disconnecting the USB device during removal and reconnecting it after installation can help the installer set up the driver in the intended order.
A game launcher’s Verify files function is useful only when the affected product is actually a game or launcher. It is not a general repair for FTDI software.

What success looks like
The application should open without the DLL message and should detect the connected hardware. If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, the installer may expect a separate FTDI package, a legacy driver, or a vendor-customized DLL. Use the hardware vendor’s installation instructions rather than replacing files manually.
Fix 2: Install the official FTDI D2XX package
Use this step when the application uses a standard FTDI device or specifically instructs you to install FTDI D2XX drivers.
- Open FTDI’s official website.
- Go to Drivers and then D2XX Drivers.
- Download the Windows package appropriate for the system and application.
- Close the affected application.
- Run the downloaded installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the FTDI device.
- Launch the application again.
FTDI’s current Windows desktop installer includes D2XX and VCP components. Do not assume that installing VCP alone will satisfy an application that explicitly calls ftd2xx.dll.
If the hardware manufacturer supplies its own installer, prefer that package. Some products depend on a tested combination of an older FTDI library, a customized driver, and application files. Installing the newest generic package can be incorrect for legacy software.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the FTDI device or a device with a warning icon.
- Double-click it and read the Device status field.
If Device Manager shows a warning icon:
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or select Browse my computer for drivers when you have the vendor’s package.
- Restart Windows after installation.
If the device is absent, try another USB port, reconnect the cable, and check whether the hardware appears under Other devices. A missing device in Device Manager can indicate a cable, power, USB, hardware, or driver-enumeration problem rather than a missing application DLL.

Fix 3: Match the DLL to the application architecture
A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 64-bit and 32-bit programs. A 32-bit application still needs the 32-bit-compatible D2XX library, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Do not choose a file solely because the operating system is 64-bit. Find out what the affected application requires.

- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the application executable and any bundled FTDI files.
Many 32-bit applications are installed under:
C:Program Files (x86)
Many 64-bit applications are installed under:
C:Program Files
These folder names are clues, not proof. Confirm the required architecture with the application vendor when possible.

FTDI documentation distinguishes the 32-bit ftd2xx.dll from the 64-bit FTD2XX64.dll. Windows also uses different system-directory behavior for 32-bit and 64-bit components. Do not rename FTD2XX64.dll to ftd2xx.dll, copy it into both System32 and SysWOW64, or overwrite an application’s private DLL unless the vendor explicitly tells you to do so.
Historical file versions
Some third-party file inventories list versions such as these:

Treat this as historical inventory information, not as current official FTDI package metadata. File size and version alone do not prove that a DLL is safe or compatible with your application.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a driver component. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive. First verify that the file came from the legitimate application or FTDI installer and check its digital signature.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
ftd2xx.dllor the affected application. - Open the event details.
- If the file is from a trusted, verified installation and the detection is understood, select Actions and then Restore or Allow on device, if available.
- Reinstall the application or FTDI package if restoration is unavailable.
Do not broadly disable Defender to make the error disappear. If the file is restored and immediately removed again, stop and contact the application or hardware vendor. A clean reinstall from the trusted source is safer than copying a replacement DLL from elsewhere.
Fix 5: Repair a missing Microsoft dependency
Sometimes Windows reports ftd2xx.dll because the library was found but could not load one of its dependencies. If the detailed error names a Microsoft Visual C++ file, install or repair the Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official documentation.
- Open Microsoft’s Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads page.
- Download the architecture required by the application.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if that option appears.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
A 32-bit application may require the x86 redistributable on 64-bit Windows. The x86 and x64 packages can coexist.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables merely because ftd2xx.dll is missing. They are relevant when diagnostics identify a missing runtime dependency. They do not replace FTDI’s library.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are later steps, not the normal solution for a missing third-party FTDI file. They can repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store, but they do not reconstruct an application’s private ftd2xx.dll.
Use them when several Windows features are malfunctioning, system files are damaged, or the failure began after broader Windows corruption.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the application again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the scan once more, then review the application-specific repair path.

Do not use Windows Features for this DLL
Opening Turn Windows features on or off will not install ftd2xx.dll. That panel controls optional Windows components, not FTDI’s third-party driver package. Do not enable unrelated features as a DLL repair method.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only when the timing fits
System Restore is reasonable when the application worked previously, the failure began after a recent driver or software change, and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not guarantee that an application or FTDI package will be restored correctly. If the issue clearly belongs to one program, reinstalling that program remains the more direct repair.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 ftd2xx.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. FTDI documents FTD2XX.DLL as an application API library, not as a COM server that needs registration.
Running regsvr32 will commonly produce an entry-point error or accomplish nothing. It does not install the lower-level FTDI driver, fix an architecture mismatch, restore a quarantined file, or place a private application DLL where the program expects it.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Standalone DLL download sites sites are a poor repair path because the file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be an incompatible version, lack the correct digital signature, or be missing the dependencies that caused the failure.
Even a clean-looking replacement may not fix the root cause. The application could need:

- A device that is not correctly detected
Use the affected application’s official installer, the hardware manufacturer’s driver package, or FTDI’s official D2XX Drivers page instead. Do not manually delete files from System32, and do not copy the DLL into multiple Windows folders as a general fix.
When the problem is not the DLL
The following clues point elsewhere:
- “Entry point not found”: likely wrong DLL version or incompatible application package.
- “Bad image”: possible corruption or architecture mismatch.
- “Specified module could not be found”: a dependency of
ftd2xx.dllmay be missing. - Device absent in Device Manager: possible USB, cable, power, hardware, or driver-enumeration issue.
- Only one legacy application fails: likely a private application DLL or vendor compatibility problem.
- The file returns to quarantine: verify provenance and signature before restoring it.
- Failure began after replacing hardware: install the package intended for the new device and application.
FTDI’s current Windows desktop installer is not listed for ARM64 on its driver page. ARM64 users may need the Windows Universal package or a solution specifically supported by the application vendor.
FAQ
Is ftd2xx.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an FTDI Ltd library associated with FTDIChip CDM Drivers. Windows Update, SFC, and DISM do not normally install an application’s missing third-party DLL.
Do all FTDI devices require ftd2xx.dll?
No. Some applications use VCP and communicate through a COM port. Other FTDI products use different interfaces. The application’s documentation determines which package it needs.

The program’s architecture determines which library it can load. A 32-bit process generally needs a 32-bit-compatible DLL, regardless of whether the operating system is 64-bit.
Should I copy ftd2xx.dll into System32?
Usually no. The application may require a private copy beside its executable, and copying files globally can create version conflicts. Repair the application or install the official FTDI package instead.
Can I rename FTD2XX64.dll to ftd2xx.dll?
No. Renaming does not change the binary architecture or make it compatible with a 32-bit application.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the error?
Only if the failure is caused by a missing Visual C++ dependency. It is not the normal fix for an absent FTDI DLL.
What should I give the vendor if the problem remains?
